There have been a few scenarios in the past where I haven't been sure what the "standard practice" is in the plant community so I thought I'd chat about it! I also opened up the topic to IG and you guys sent in some really good ones -- ones I'm sure people talk about amongst themselves but I never see it discussed publicly on socials. I'm curious to know what you all think as well!

honestly, the seed/pollen argument is super easy for me. You split profits in a way that was agreed upon before the pollen was provided :) If the pollen donor wants 50% and you have a receptive plant and want that pollen you give them 50%. If they agree to take less, you make an agreement that fits both sides. If you can't agree on the split, then both sides move on and find other pollination partners :) And it's the same with buying, if you want to buy at a discount and agree to give some seeds in return that's completely ok in my book, as long as it's agreed upon before the pollination, and both sides are aware of the risks. And if the seed producer goes back on any of those agreements they are burned for me forever, not even as friends, but as people.

What a great topic! I can also see charmaines influence on your plants on your shelf (rhipsalis!!!) and also i can definitely see your influence on her collection. It's so cool to share and learn from friends!

I'm very interested to see this one!! ❤🎉 It seems the community varies SO much depending which platform it's on, and the toxicity levels vary a lot too :/ I pretty much stick to youtube and planty discords now because its closer knit, and I rarely go into massive groups on facebook anymore (where the toxicity is at its highest). It's always so interesting seeing yours and Charmaine's views on the community!

Hello from sunny Stellenbosch, South Africa. I am so behind on my video watching. You would think this time of year would mean more free time but at the moment it feels like the opposite 😢. I love your videos and content. The only ones I dont watch are the Hoya ones. Enjoy your holiday season and take a break if you need it. We will all still be here next year 😊

Can I ask why you don’t watch/like the hoya videos? No judgment at all! I just like hearing what different people think about Hoyas, because they interest me very much.

@laurenclaire2500 mainly because I just don't have any interest in Hoya. I actually own one which is just surviving but that's all.

I would make a counter argument on not giving a unifying name to an entire batch. Enid from NSE crossed wendlingeri and scherzerianum and created seedlings with red coiled flowers. This cross was already made years ago by another nursery but the seedlings came out supposedly unremarkable. So Enid calling her prettier batch "chainsaw" distinguishes her hybrid with someone else's hybrid that might be the same cross but not look the same. I also have a friend who hybridizes and sells anthuriums under 'batch names.' However, they take the time to consolidate the batch by only growing and selling the seedlings that are showing similar (and desirable) characteristics. They trash the slow growers and unremarkable looking ones, and end up with a very limited number of seedlings to sell. They create batch names so that if someone else makes the same cross, you can distinguish their batch from someone else's. So I think there should be some exceptions so long as breeders clarify if a plant with a special name is a clone of a mother or part of a consolidated batch. I do agree though that selling every single sprouted seed under a branded name is problematic. Another great video!😄

the argument of how to split seeds happened in the Anthurium Addicts fb group. most ppl said 50/50 is the most fair split. a few thought the person with the mother plant might deserve 60% of the share, and another few thought it should just simply be discussed prior.

In regards to first topic - Ecuagenera gives the names of original crossed plants , you need to open page with a specific plant , its not on the main page.

Thank you for discussing these. In regard to gifting … the length of time is important but I also think the value / rarity matters hugely. Personally I haven’t sold any gifted plants (yet) but I would feel worse selling any props of an expensive / cherished plants over a seeds I’ve grown out. I quite often ask if I can regift if I have multiples 🥰

At the end of the day it takes two plants to do the deed so 50/50 ownership of seeds just makes sense
@botanicassie

Yes but I think the reason people are divided is because all the pollen donor does collect and hand over. The person with the mother plant then puts the pollen on watches for it to take cares for the plant and nurses the berries to fruition. They then have to remove the berries and germinate the seeds. It’s just more work for the mother plant owner. But I think whatever is agreed upon prior is what’s best. If that’s 50/50 then that’s totally cool!

I am still very new to anthuriums, I am so thrown off by new hearing about tree fern soil??? Can you tell me what you mean by this? I learned about you from Charmaine's channel and I just love the both of you, I recently took notes of a mix that she uses, but i noticed she used soil? I kinda went 'soilless' with only using coco coir...so i really could use a little guidance if possible. Thank you so much in advance!

I have things of my mothers and recently found a book that my mom had saved of all the cards people sent me through my early years. It felt rid of it but I threw it away. I save things that are family related. My mom had a bunch of “Storybook Dolls”. She is putting them up on Facebook market place to sell. I want so bad to save them but I have no way to save and show them off. Mom kept them in their boxes in trunk in the basement. I was always disappointed that she kept them all away in the basement but I’d be doing the same thing so I had to give up the idea of getting one. It would be in a box somewhere.all this to say I’m a packrat

I think the seedageddon in question was in the fb group Anthurium Enthusiasts. I remember following an intense conflict about seeds and division of profits, responsibility, value of effort etc. people were taking sides, arguing, giving receipts, people were kicked out of the group. It was a whole big thing 😄

So, Ecuagenera claims that they have to name their crosses in order to export them. But I’m sure it’s mostly a branding thing. One thing that I am VERY curious about Re: naming plants is why do we hate Anthurium hybrid names but we so widely accept Philodendron Splendid, Glorious, Majestic, etc. 🤔
@warp871
@warp871 6 ай бұрын
it's probably partly because Anthuriums are much easier to breed, anyone can do it, whereas Philodendrons will not flower for most of the average plant hobbyists growing their philodendrons in their living rooms. When you start seeing new weird names for Anthurium on a daily basis it does get tiring, like..I just want to know the actual ID of the plant. even if it's just a no ID specimen. Saying this as a non-snobby person, I love most indonesian anthuriums for example. But putting names on everything that are not actual cultivars only generates confusion. I'm pretty sure the philos you mentioned are all actual registered cultivars.
