Absolute best, I tried three times on other sites then found your long tail cast on which I vaguely remember from childhood (I’m now mid 50s!). Neat and sooo easy and no tight cast on stitches. Thank youuu

This method does make for a neater first row of stitches. I was doing a backward thumb method similar to this but wondered why my stitches weren't even and my first stitch was not quite right even though it started with a slip knot stitch. I like this way better.

Wonderful video! Thank you for posting. One question: I've always done this and seen it demonstrated with yarn tail over the thumb and working yarn (attached to the ball) over the finger. Are there different schools of thought on this?

Does anyone know what you do with the unattached excess yarn from your slip knot once you start knitting? Do we cut it off? Will it come undone?

It depends on what you're making, you can use it for sewing up edges at the end of a project. It won't come undone though either way.

It creates a less rigid beginning row so it's good for say hats
