@@Nino_J I'm happy to hear that! During our research on these Lexus models it seem that regular maintenance is the key to longevity, not too much can go wrong with them as long as the oil changes are done regularly.

I picked mine up 3 years ago on a whim from a guy at work. 1999 es300 w/140k. Its now my daily driver. It gets down to -50c here in Edmonton and it just goes and goes. Plus heated seats! Mine has the factory adjustable suspension from the drivers seat but the struts died. Lexus wants $700cad each, so I put in some Monroe Quick Struts for $97 each. Its my tiny Cadillac. And that 210hp is snappy with the OD kicked off in such a light car. It recently started throwing codes (right bank fail/misfire). Took a gamble from symptoms and replaced the VVT solenoids (both for $70cad from Amazon) and it fixed the problem and actually increased its performance. I put about 3500 km on it a year. I change the oil (I swapped to synth when I bought it) just before winter every year. I have also put in a new battery with higher cold cranking rating as well as had a block heater installed. Next repair is the "clunking" rear sway bar links and eventually I want to replace all the front end with MOOG parts. I put $40cad (95c /Liter) every 5-6 weeks since I only drive it to and from work and the very few places on the way. Crazy good gas mileage if you keep the OD on. Major foreseeable issue: I'm getting a very minor, barely noticeable shimmy on left hand turns in the morning. I suspect power steering pump.

The interior still looks like brand new, but the exterior paint has started to blemish and peel a bit. This is also the car where I started to learn how to work on my own car and it has been quite the enjoyable learning adventure. Great cars for self-repair. I have a newer Pioneer LCD screen with USB/bluetooth/microphone and rear-view camera, so it feels really modern inside. A lot of people can't believe my car is this old. They definitely feel really nice and smooth on the road. My friend with a young Honda Fit was saying my car felt smoother on the road than his newer car and he was confused. I've owned my 2001 Lexus ES300 for a little over 3 years now. It had 91,000 miles on the clock and I bought it for only $5,000. A great deal considering what a clean example it is. It is true, the best things about this car is how reliable and smooth it is. 99% of the time when people ride in my car, the first thing they'll comment on is how smooth it drives. Lately I've been looking to buy a GS400 or IS350, but I keep hesitating because I know I'll miss this car tremendously.
@PRNTestDrive6 жыл бұрын
$5k is a steal for that mileage! We've spotted a few for sale over the year, with a lot more miles under it, for around the same price (Canadian). If you find a decent GS 400 we'd definitely recommend checking it out, but not if it means you have to give up the ES 300. They just don't make cars like this anymore, and if you can hold onto one, you should!

I'm one of the few still looking for this type of car, I currently have a 2005 Rav4 S as a first car. Currently doing a stereo system install on it to see how it's like to have a real good sound system. For about $1,700. Although I probably won't get this car till like next year most likely. Too busy on my current audio system that I plan to transfer to the ES-300 after I get it done in my Rav4. 5 things I love about this car. #1. Large interior (Good for me as I'm a big guy), #2. Large Trunk (Great for my dual 12 subwoofers & some luggage or other gear), #3. Good gas mileage (I do a lot of combined highway & city driving mostly highway though but on quiet a few occasions I do a bit of city driving), #4. Outstanding reliability (Which is a must for me), & finally #5. A easily upgrade able stereo system as (I like to tinker with stereo equipment a LOT) so a car like this that's easy to work on and fairly straightforward on how to get to things is great! You can't say that for some cars especially when it comes to doing repairs yourself. P.S. I forgot to say this as well, from what a friend told me about Japanese cars specifically Toyota & Hondas. CHEAP PARTS! Lmao!

I wouldn't say you're part of a few! There's still interest in these cars, not as much as something like a BMW 528i or Mercedes E 320 but you won't find something this old that's as reliable! My dad had a 93 LS 400 that he bought CPO in 1995 and he put well over 300k miles on before he sold it, so we're well acquainted with the famous Lexus build quality/reliability. Having said that, I cannot believe how buttery smooth my particular ES runs and drives some 20 years on. Add in the fact that I only paid $1550 (USD) for it and I think most would agree it was an awesome investment of the Covid stimulus money I received a few weeks back. :-) Thanks again for doing this video. Planning on replacing the drivers seat bottom as the perforated leather is cracking and has torn, an 02 sensor that is bad and the usual major service timing belt job at 220k. My first Lexus was a 1996 ES300 and eventually upgraded to the 2000 ES. I loved these cars for the styling and the commuting. After awhile, I went to a 2006 IS350 and now a 2016 IS350 FSport, but every time I see the old ES'....I say: "Dang that's a pretty car." Side note: Clean these cars before taking videos!
@PRNTestDrive5 жыл бұрын
The owner of this car drove about 100km to meet up with us, it's not feasible to then ask the owner to find a car wash and spend their own money to clean it so I can make a video about it. We've changed the way we search for owner-vehicles for this show since filming this, which is why we only did two in 2019. It's not easy to make something like this happen, and it doesn't fill me with excitement to do more when people complain in the comments about it either.

If everything is original I'd definitely jump on it! Often these are well taken care of, but by now things like the radio, floor mats, and even seats have been changed, if the seats wear out people throw on a cheap cover or something. I still recommend this car as a daily driver or first car, you can't get this level of reliability and comfort from anything else!

I’m in the same spot as you’re. For me it’s between the 99 Lexus ES 300 and an 04 Infiniti G35. They’re both in comparable conditions. Only the fact that the G35 has less mileage on it. Coming from a Camry, I hate to see myself going for the G35.

I always find it difficult resisting the temptation to say "Nice Camry!" when I see an ES. But like the Camrys of this era, they are tanks - just tanks with more creature comforts. Many of these cars have reached beater status and are an excellent choice if you're on a strict budget, have a highway commute, need reliability, but don't want to live with a shitbox. Millennial drivers should try to find a Millennium Edition, just because.
@PRNTestDrive5 жыл бұрын

Sounds like a solid deal! Ideally you'll want to find a mechanic that specializes in import/Japanese cars to do the inspection. For the most part though this generation ES doesn't have much in terms of severe maintenance. Oil change and spark plugs are always a good start for any used car, along with air filters and a coolant flush. Might be looking at $300-500 for that depending on the shop, but if you have the service history you might be able to skip the coolant flush right away.

Doesn't sound like a bad price at all! That's assuming you have the service history for it, and you can take it to your own mechanic to have it checked out. Sometimes a low mileage car can be costly since the typical wear-and-tear items might not have been replaced/serviced.

@@ganeshr008 that's a tough call because those are both very good deals on very good cars, but alot of people don't realize a huge factor about what breaks on a Toyota or Lexus is age, and when one is 20 years old and you drive it alot some small things will go wrong here and there. And it 5 -10 years rubber seals will start to go out and the car won't be worth it anymore and you'll want to upgrade, but by then you can just upgrade to another Lexus for $1500 - $3000. The 2010 Corolla will last longer but there will also be more complicated electronics and cheaper plastics so more things can break, although the Corolla also has a 4 cyl engine that is cheaper to maintain and less things that will break, and the Corolla is still a slightly better deal if you won't miss the comfort and amenities of the Lexus. If I were you I'd try to get that 2002 ES for $2500 or look for ones as far back as 1996 for $1000 - $1500. As long as you have a mechanic confirm beforehand that it runs good, and everything is in good shape, you can get a higher mileage one and you'll still be able to get about 5 years out of it or more. If you do that three times you're only spending $4500 and you're driving different Lexus that whole time instead of a Corolla.
