Anyone considering this vehicle, make sure the one you are interested in purchasing has had the updated ABS Actuator installed, and not only installed, but installed by a Lexus dealer. Why? The part is now out of warranty, and can cost you $4500-7000 depending on your location. I learned the hard way, and of course when I had it done I might as well had the timing belt done while so was in there among other things. Aside from that, it's a great vehicle, probably the best vehicle i've ever owned. Recently I had to choose between selling my RX400H and my Tacoma, and I ended up keeping the RX. It's just a great dependable vehicle. It's best stored indoors if possible. Take care of it and your kids will probably be driving it.

It’s not that expensive. I got a new OEM ABS actuator installed for around $2500 on my 2006 Highlander Hybrid (same part). But still really annoying that I had to spend that much.

@@MKULTRA_Victim_ There's a difference in markup when a Lexus dealership installs it, even if they both use the same part. And you definitely want it done at the dealership and not some small private shop. I ended up getting my timing belt done at the same time, might as well.

In my observation, they seem to start to break when they're sat around not being used, rather than munching up the miles, so it sounds pretty consistent. I only really ever had problems with the 1st UK lockdown meaning it sat for around 3 months barely being driven. The critical manufacturing fault is with water ingress in the trunk area, though, so I'd recommend every owner to remove the plastics and check for any water getting in (especially this time of year, for us northern hemisphere folks). The highest risk is pretty much always going to be water ingress into the batteries/electrics under the rear seats, and it can do it via blocked sunroof drains, or water in the trunk area.

The drivetrain/chassis in these things is so addictive - always power, always quiet with great ride, 7.4s 0-60 mph & 30mpg. Remarkably flat in corners. It's even easy to park in a standard space - the newer models are bigger. Better still, it all works. Cream leather is amazing.

I imagine it was a bit of a rocketship back in 2005, but modern X3/X5s are silly fast now (4 to 5 secs to 60). For a very heavy vehicle, it can have a hot-hatch feel to it, as it isn't as slow and boat-like as many others in the class.

Have had my 2008 rx400h SE-L (92k on the clock) for a couple of months now, love it. I'm getting around 30.5 mpg from it which includes several hundred miles at 70 mph or above and short 3.5 mile each way journeys to work. Transition from electric to engine and back is seamless, goes up hill with little effort. Great spec for year and everything still works. Friends and family love travelling in it especially the grandkids as they like the rear DVD screens. Tax and insurance is reasonable considering and car is ulez compliant, good for me as Mum still lives in London.

That's quite unusual - I would assume it has spent an above average time near the sea/on salty winter roads if that is the case? I have generally found they are like a typical Japanese car, in that they develop a grey/aesthetic corrosion on most of the fasteners and underbody, but next to no body or structural rust (I haven't read/heard of any that even needed welding). Most prevalent 'body rust' is from stone chips on the bonnet. I think I did find that the jacking points had been squashed (assuming a careless four post lift?) when I first bought mine, but I correct that, tidied it all up, and sprayed over with stonechip paint. They aren't really a four-by-four, as mentioned, so I wouldn't be expecting the typical rot you get on things that have sludged around in cow muck or mud - most are highly likely to have been Chelsea Tractors in their earlier lives.

@@wheeldesire Thanks for the reply. I was surprisingly disappointed by the volume of rust on the underside, some of it looks much more than surface rust to my eye. By next March, I pay off the loan that I took out to buy (in March 2019) my 2007 Lexus RX 400h. I love this car, and will buy another, which, given my bduget, will be a 2010-ish model. What I hope to find in a new model is, much less road noise (despite fitting the quietest tyres), improve front end traction, when you floor the gas; an absence of the unknown niggling fault that drains the battery; a greatly improved SatNav!! So, my question is, for all you clever and knowledgable people ot there, "Is 2010 a good year, and will I find that these problems have been addressed? If not, would a 2011 better, for instance?"

Usually you find "update" videos after installation videos with folks saying they're having problems and no product support. I kept mine stock w/ a cd player since I didn't want to over complicate things and bought a Yatour BT adapter which connects to the back of the cd player and placed it in the glove box. You control audio and calls from the steering wheel. Then got a pormido backup/dashcam off Amazon and hardwired it (this is probably the best upgrade I've done to the car)

@wheeldesire

Lexus still give a 15-year warranty on the Hybrid Checks. It looked like a 2008 is basically on the limits of that (depending on build month), but they should still offer the check if you wanted to arrange that with a seller, for peace of mind. Generally speaking, outside of 1st Gen white goods tat like Leafs (with basically non-existent battery management), it seems like the concept of replacing failing batteries is rather rare. I haven't been on the Lexus forums for a few years, but you could pop over there and ask the question

I’m looking at a 2008 rx400h with 170k miles, unfortunately more miles than I wanted…but what things should I look for when inspecting the car? Thanks!
@wheeldesire
@wheeldesire 2 жыл бұрын
Ideally, a Hybrid Check. I don't know if you're in the UK or not, but Lexus charge £59 for a check up until the 15th year old. It validates the condition of the hybrid system and adds a year's warranty to it if it's okay. No real excuse other than simply not knowing, or not wanting to have it checked, from a seller's point of view. Great from a buyer's point of view, as that's the expensive bit. The miles isn't really indicative of any particular issue otherwise, but the 3.3 engine does have a potentially expensive service based on the spark plugs, water pump, timing belt and the usual bits like that. Exhausts can be expensive, and aren't easily or cheaply available, so make sure it's not blowing. Rear camera (if fitted) can fail and it's expensive to replace OE, but I fixed mine (at the time) with a £20 one from china, with some soldering and inventiveness. Biggest issue, hands down, is water ingress - it gets into the rear of the car around the tailgate, in a variety of places and can leak into the boot, then down into the batteries etc under the rear seats. Check for condensation - bad sign! Ideally, see if you can check under all the plastics in the rear, or around the headlining, for signs of an unresolved leak. Beyond those bits, it's basic stuff. It's a Lexus though, so even though some bits are getting dated now, they are generally supremely reliable and wear the miles very well.

How about the hybrid battery life and the inverter also?
@wheeldesire
@wheeldesire 4 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, problems are very uncommon. I believe there was a VIN range that had a recall for an inverter issue, but you don't really hear of any more than a handful of issues otherwise. Like any car, if it's not looked after then issues will surface regardless of build quality. One of the main contributions is water ingress. There are various places (beyond the usual sunroof drains) where water can leak in around the rear. This can find its way into the battery area under the rear seats and cause issues. You can take advantage of the Lexus Hybrid check, which is now extended for up until the car's 15th birthday. This is currently £59 or so (free with a service I believe) and adds a years warranty to the hybrid system. Value for money if you have anxiety over such things. The battery technology is similar to the Prius, so I believe you can have cells refurbished at a reasonable cost, should you ever worry about the battery longevity

I don't think there are many cases at all where that has been required. The Hybrid Health Check lexus offer can still be done and warranted up to 10 years old, I think. It's not a big capacity, so I doubt it would be a lot to replace even if you did need to

Mileage doesn't necessarily mean much on its own. The only issue I had with mine was the lack of parts if something *did* go wrong. As they're more of a hybrid for power, rather than economy, I think it would be brave to buy one if you have no contingency plans to afford a few fixes. For example, the spark plugs in most transverse V6s tend to be a big job if they need replacing. That being said, I haven't kept up with prices since the boom of the pandemic. I think I sold mine for around £4k at the time

@wheeldesire
@wheeldesire 3 жыл бұрын
The 300/350 are the non-hybrids, and 400h/450h are hybrids, so a lot of it will depend on whether you are bothered about the hybrid bit. Simplistically put, the hybrids are more powerful and more economical, but the non-hybrids are (usually) much cheaper to buy. It really depends on the usage. Probably won't work out to buy a hybrid if you're going to do get low miles and only keep it a short time. There's going to be a bit of unpredictability around ICE and hybrids going forwards in terms of future value, but if you are happy with the older looks, an RX400h offers probably the best gamble. If you buy one under 15 years old, you can still get the hybrid check and Warranty from Lexus I think.

Would you say for 2022 the SEL is not really giving you much extra than SE? Also, do you know what extra the executive/limited edition trims gave you?
@wheeldesire
@wheeldesire 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the SE doesn't come with the Mark Levinson sound package, which (in my non-audiophile proletarian view) is excellent still in 2022. DVD screens could be bodged to make them use something more modern too, I expect. If they work. Not sure if all SE models come with a rear camera, which is very useful on a big fat machine like these. Sat nav was also an option on the SE, but an acquired taste and not really need in 2022. The Executive LE is a weird one. It was supposed to be a full-fat runout model, but I only really tend to see them with garish chrome door handles and wood interior bits, but often lacking the rear seat entertainment. For this reason, I tend to see it as the "retired executive" edition. Best thing to do is to buy based on the kit and condition, as the specs can be rather random. Prioritise the Mark Levinson sound if you like your music, and anything else is likely to be a battle of price Vs condition
@ln5747

@@wheeldesire thanks. I'm sure I read in later models SE got Mark Levinson dont take my word though. I'm not too fussed about camera providing there are reversing sensors which I have always got on well with, but yes on something that size no sensors/camera for me would be a no go. But yes I think for me other than base model (which I haven't seen any for sale on autotrader) I think I will just go for condition. Doesn't seem to be much if any difference in price on the trim levels anyway, seems to be all based on condition/service history. Just need to decide on black Vs cream leather haha. I don't like the beige, but there seems to be a lighter whiteish leather which I like but some are quite stained if not looked after. Don't have that problem with black.
@wheeldesire

@@ln5747 no Mark Levinson as standard, unfortunately, but it was an option. You'll still get some SEs with a poverty spec head unit looking very lost in the large area the ML commands. You can easily swap in a cheaper 12v alternative for a little effort and not a lot of money though - the standard uses 6v, so you literally chop it out and use the 12v from the reverse lamp instead. Ideally you want it to work if you're not confident with wiring one in. - Headlight level sensor. Expensive to replace and the little arms do break on them. You'll be putting out a signal for batman if it's broken as they'll be pointing up in the sky. It won't necessarily show as a fault, so look on the rear right of the car - it attaches to the suspension arm. - Exhaust. Expensive to replace, difficult to source. I had one made (standard spec) in stainless for ~£400 though - just don't expect value from off-the-shelf parts. Be wary of any blowing, and check the main catalytic converter is still there - they are a keen target for theft. - Spark Plugs & Timing Belt. By all accounts, a pain to do. Inlet manifold comes off for the rear bank of plug, at which point you might annoy a coil and have to do it all over again! Service history should ideally show a timing belt/water pump around the 100k mark, and plugs roughly every 60k. - 'Starter' Battery. The little 12v one under the bonnet has barely any real purpose except the initial power-on, but it's very small and will fail quickly and easily if you leave the car parked up for a week or so at a time - or, even with the interior light on whilst you're cleaning it out. Not any more expensive than any other battery though; I bought a new Varta one for £40 or so. Anything else beyond that I found is reasonably priced or unlikely to be a problem. The biggest issue they tend to all have (silently) is water ingress. Gets in around various areas in the roof and rear hatch, so my advice would be to strip the boot plastics out and look to see if there are any signs of a leak. It gets into the expensive battery electricals under the seat if left to leak. Of course any car has problems really, and of all the cars I've owned (had quite a lot over the years) it was very reliable.

@@wheeldesire thank you, extremely helpful. Fortunately the 12V battery is cheap, so no issue. The camera works fine so far. The owner supposedly changed the belt on 170.000kms, as per the invoice. As the intervals are 150k, with the current 277.000kms I still have some time for it. No mention of spark plugs though. Will try to check the exhaust and the catalysator, but the car has recently gone through the official inspection, so I assume it is still there, otherwise the emissions test would fail.

Even though I'm not a fan of hybrids, and eletric cars never they will never be part of my life ever, but I think this lexus rx400h is nice I like the design of it alot alot better then driving a prius becaaue this isn't anything like a prius it has a v6 and alot faster, It's reasonable on fuel and should be good to drive even if you don't care about mpg, I like this car overall they are relible and cheaper on maintenance compare to bmw or audi etc, end of the day you can't the engines end of the day but this car has two things combined to give you good ride and economy, I dont own this car or ever driven I own a lexus its is200 which is lovely quite and smoth with the straight six everything is there, power might not be alot at 153bhp but can be tuned with turbo and get a relible fast car, only down side is fuel economy you really won't get alot of mpg usally I drive sensible and get between 20-30 mpg average not too bad but not too good either, but I love driving it and I think that if worth it rather own somthing relible and good then own somthing that is not relible and costs u more to maintain even if its good on fuel.

@wheeldesire 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's going to be subjective - if you've only ever had Peugeots, it's as quiet as space. If you've had a Maybach, it'll be noisy. Generally speaking, though, only a small vibration indicated the engine was starting up/stopping. It certainly isn't abundantly sound-proofed (there's no double-glazing, nor decadently sound-proofing), but road and engine noise wasn't really a thing.

And 400h vs 450h?
@wheeldesire
@wheeldesire 3 жыл бұрын
I've never driven a 450h. They were significantly more expensive (used) than the 400h, and still are, so there's little to no comparison. The 450h is arguably gifted with better aesthetics (more modern cars look more modern, I guess), but I always heard that the quality was drastically reduced. That being said, the 450h is of course slightly cheaper to run in terms of fuel and, in the UK, VED, but it is also a smidge slower to 60.

Only thing missing is a USB AND AUX... THESE CARS ARE BRILLIANT
@wheeldesire
@wheeldesire 4 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely, but of course it would have been highly unusual for a car to have had that in 2006. The first iPhone came out in 2007, so the 'take your music with you' thing was more limited to iPods, of which mine did have the factory kit for it. I don't think you'd notice it so much if it weren't for the fact that the rest of the technology makes you forget how ahead of the curve it was. Luckily, you can easily fit aftermarket Bluetooth or USB/AUX kits via the 'CD Changer' port on the standard stereo, as mentioned in the description. They work really well and the Bluetooth one was £30 or so, which is a lot cheaper than the various options (e.g Grom) that I've seen people fitting.

easy fix with a USB WiFi adapter you plug in your lighter socket and you can both charge the phone and play music via car's sound system from a stick. You simply use one of empty frequencies on your radio to tune the USB adapter in and voila! Works fine on mine. I also have a cassette converter with a mini jack - you put it inside the tape player and plug the cable in your phone's headphone socket. Again, works fine for me if necessary. On top of it, I still have quite a few cassettes from over 20 years ago and the player still does the job. :-)

@wheeldesire
@wheeldesire 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulgodbey304 I think the differences are vague and the boundary gets shared, but certainly with the RX400h there's no physical "connection" between the front and the rear drive - the rear is a completely independent power unit that is seldom used. AWD usually relates to proportioning power where it is needed - I'm not sure that the RX can proportion more to the rear than the front due to the lack of prop & diff, and the fact that the engine is directly connected to the gearbox when running. As mentioned, I find it easier to call it a faux-by-four as it doesn't really meet either. I think it's usually whatever the marketing department choose to call it, though!
