If you do trails not fire roads, get a winch if you ride solo.

It’s definitely something I’ve been considering for the Tacoma build now. Thankfully the Tacoma is even more capable, I’ve had more years of wheeling experience and having great people around has been a plus. I’ve been looking at smittybuilt winches at the moment.

Great video!....It's inspired me to do better with my 4runner. What negative things have you found thus far with your set up? I'd like to emulate your rig.

Thank you! I really miss that 4runner it was a beast but I’m now in a 3rd Gen Tacoma. I’d say the biggest downside was the weight of the bumpers, Looking back I definitely would have went with something a lot lighter from Nguyen Works for the rear and do a lighter custom front or aluminum front bumper but Everything else worked fantastic. I would now recommend going with a 3link from Optoffroad/freelgoodperformace to help the rear end cycle better with the 12in shocks but it wasn’t out yet when I did mine. Check out Optoffroad for a lot of great parts for the 4runner and use my discount code Mav for alittle cash back in your pocket.

@@Mavadv Great video, thanks for taking the time to make it. Can you share a little about your move to the Tacoma? Is it a daily too or mostly trail setup? What do you love / miss? I’m debating going LT on my 3rd gen, but it would be fully dedicated for trail.

@@johnheiss9954 hey John! My move to the Tacoma has been amazing, don’t get me wrong I do miss my 4runner from time to time. The Tacoma is solely the adventure mobile. I’ll drive it around town sometimes if it’s been sitting for a few days/week. I love having the nicer interior of the Tacoma and updated technology. My goal with the Tacoma was to keep it simple especially since I want the truck for longer distance trips were auto part stores would have any parts I would need if I broke anything on a trail. The 4Runner was almost too custom and I was afraid of taking it too far from town where I couldn’t park it to wait on custom CVs or steering components. The only issue I had with the Tacoma is actually getting a lemon motor with poor machining from the factory causing scoring in the engine. It was replaced by Toyota free of charge but definitely a bummer on the first new vehicle I’ve ever owned. If I could go back I think I would build the 4Runner to be just a trail rig and not trying to camp out of it. Definitely try and save weight on different bumpers and such. I think this answered your question sorry for going on a tangent haha

@@Mavadv great info thanks for all that. Makes total sense. Such a rabbit hole. Good advice on the weight too. Have a new RAV4 for a daily which has been nice and modern. Thinking to go long travel on the 4Runner for more adventure but not go so far to make it not driveable for medium distance / camping. Would need checklist of parts if breaking stuff is likely. Fun planning process. Great vids and keep up the good work.

When did you get the shrockworks rear bumper? It looks like they are out of business now.
@Mavadv7 ай бұрын
I got them in 2017 or 2018. I did see they shut their doors, kind of a bummer since they really made great stuff.

You can find them now from Optoffroad also use my code (Mav) for a discount on them. BXBUILT has gone out of business since I made that video but Teq Customs now builds them with even better quality. optoffroad.com/products/96-02-toyota-4runner-retrofit-headlights

That company Shrockworks actually went out of business just after Covid unfortunately. I really liked how well they tucked up against the 4runner.
