Hi there, very grateful for your video. Just a few critiques to further improve what you already do well: 1. Ribbon cables can be bent! a couple 90deg turns would make for a much cleaner installation 2. In addition to tacking down the first/last pins to hold a delicate cable in place, consider lining up and then using Kapton tape before soldering. Truly a game changer. 3. You can definitely cut anywhere on a ribbon cable where there isn't a trace (1:03:15); that explains the length discrepancy you were seeing 4. I know you already made a shorter version, but consider adding Timestamps regardless. KZbin has a built-in timestamps feature that is pretty intuitive.

Hi there! Thank you for the feedback! Those are great ideas. I'll look to incorporate them into my next mod project. That's a good idea with the timestamps too. The timestamps aren't automatic though, right?

Really easy to follow, great explanations and excellent closeups of the pins you need to solder to. Thanks for posting such a great tutorial!

I'm not sure what I did wrong but it didn't work at all and still won't work, I've soldered everything properly, I've tested for continuity and I don't have any bridges whatsoever, so what am I doing wrong do I have the wrong chip, the only thing different is that my n64 motherboard says 03 on it instead of 04 like yours?
@FairyKid64
@FairyKid64 5 ай бұрын
It should work on any N64 motherboard revision. Did you plug in the ribbon cable correctly? I've plugged ribbon cables in upside down before and that has caused problems. On this mod, I'm pretty sure the contacts on the ribbon cable face down when you're plugging it in. Also, make sure it's plugged in all the way.

@FairyKid64 well I have the ribbon cable as to where the cable doesn't bend at all it's just straight across, does the ribbon need to be flipped, I haven't installed it into the case yet I've just had it out since I wanted to make sure it works first
@FairyKid64
@FairyKid64 5 ай бұрын
Ah, gotcha. Yes, the ribbon cable does flip around. If you check out the thumbnail of this video, you can see how it's oriented more or less.

Unfortunate that it doesn’t have deblur. Wonder how it’ll stack up to the other options.

Thanks for such an informative and entertaining video. It was really cool to see the result of switching from component to HDMI. I look forward to the next video showing the results. It was fun to hear those sayings which are so true. - "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" and "A stitch in time saves nine." It may seem like it takes extra time but what really is time consuming is when it turns into "A pound of cure." ... and it may get to the point where it can't be fixed. Also, Do you have a link for the AIR BLOWER you used? About how much do those run and are they operated by batteries? Thanks for all of your hard work on putting these informative and entertaining videos together!

Thanks for the comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for bringing to my attention that I forgot the link to the air blower! It's very useful. And it runs on an internal battery too - so you just charge it! Here's an Amazon link to it: amzn.to/453T8GF

Thank you so much for this video, does yours sometimes have trouble outputing 480i? My HDMI adapter sometimes is a little blurry on a menu that is 480i but sometimes it's not , it's completely random. I don't know if it's a problem with my soldering or if it's normal for this kit
@FairyKid64
@FairyKid64 15 күн бұрын
Your soldering is probably fine. The 480i deinterlacing isn't the absolute best, but luckily most games are 240p.

Thanks for making this, I used this video to install mine last night. It was actually pretty straight forward and to my surprise, I didn't fry anything! Do you know what the extra points on the flex cable are for? Mine shipped with a bunch of super thin kynar wire strips too. Edit: update - I saw what those are for, alternate points on late model N64, some extra points if you have clock issues. Guess I didn't need them.

Ah, interesting. I didn't know that about the extra cables! I'm glad this video helped you with the install too! 😎

Awesome video. Bought this two weeks ago and just got it. What is your temp for soldering? I bought the gamebox 64hd but the flex cable melted on me and I had it on 255c. Of course I can’t get a replacement cable because they are out of stock.
@FairyKid64
@FairyKid64 Жыл бұрын
Nice. I hope this one works out better for you then. I had my temperature set pretty high actually because I was using such a fine tip. I think I had it set to 700 degrees Farenheit just to get the end of the tip hot. But if you're not using a fine tip like mine, I definitely wouldn't set it that high. Even with a fine tip, it's probably better to start lower and work up if the solder doesn't flow well. Maybe try starting at 400 or 500 Farenheit and see how well the solder flows and work up from there. Especially if you're using a thick solder tip on your iron.

@@FairyKid64 thanks for the fast reply. Yea I ordered a solder station with a blower which is nice. Just trying to get used to the temps from my old solder iron. I’ll give it a shot.

Sadly i busted my N64 One tiiiiny solder blob was the reason No dragging and nothing worked And my stannol desolderwick... it just wouldn't freaking WOULDN'T take up any of the excess solder ^^'' Checked several videos to not loose my sanity but i did it right. Think sometimes it's just like that

Yes - I've been there before! In the first N64 HDMI mod I ever did, I used way too much solder and had a ton of bridges. I was able to eventually fix it, but it was a ton of work.
