WT - Beginners Guide Part 4.2, The Climbing Spiral

Of the two most frequent questions new players ask me, one is "how do you look around while controlling the plane" which I answered in an earlier video in this series. The other is "how do you perform a climbing spiral?".
I have indeed already explained this video as part of earlier vids, but this one provides a more focused & hopefully comprehensive explanation that will enable anyone to go out and practice the maneuver.
The music is "Bobby & the Vampire" by the Wholetone Trio, who kindly gave permission for me to use it in this video. They're a superb but little known band, check out their original vid at • "Bobby & The Vampire" ... - their website is www.wholetonetrio.com and their FB page is / 137907256227405
Thankyou also to Gaijin for giving permission to use a snippet of their Victory is Ours trailer, the original for which can be found here - • War Thunder - 'Victory...
If you've been living under a rock & haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favour and watch the whole thing, its quite spectacular.

I've been doing smaller versions of this, so I at least have the fundamentals and it's all a matter of practicing it enough to do it right. I've also picked up barrel rolls, the yo-yo, hammerhead, split-S and Immelmann. I really ought to thank you, because I'm flying better now than I was when I started playing three months ago. Your videos teach me something new every time, and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future!

I can't thank you enough for this series. I went from getting a few assists and maybe a kill every couple games to regularly getting 3 kills a game+assists literally overnight just from watching these videos. Still a serious noob, but just learning when to commit/abort an attack run to save speed + some basic evasive maneuvers has completely changed this game for me. It went from entirely frustrating to incredibly fun. Thanks!

Hi Long5hot - wonderful info. This is the one manoeuvre that was missing (ok, one of the many) from my play and I recently looked through your older content and carefully watched your play. Then spent an evening in custom battles trying different planes to get a feel for how they differ. it surprised me that something you and other aces make look so easy, took a bit to get smooth and working correctly, particularly the transition from looking straight ahead with mouse aim to downward once you activate the keyboard. I certainly still mess this up too many times for my liking but slowly getting more and more effective. Hope this post helps viewers that are trying this for the first time to know that it is not as easy as these masters show- but if I can learn it, anyone can :-).

kudos for the diagram at 4 Min. Knowing all the aerobatics diags e.g. at Wikipedia these are often hard to understand, and you will know they are even harder to make, in a manner where they are a.) right b.) comprehensible - because the level of abstraction is obviously high. In that aspect, your illustrations are inspiring.

Thanks Lon5hot. I do my spirals mostly with just the mouse, but sometimes I have to level the wings, so I'll hold the aileron keys more and see if that gives me the view I need to keep from loading the enemy. Right now my main two problems is a good spiral climb and not losing the enemy in a turn fight. I have the worst time when I loose sight of him/her.

@long5hot
@long5hot 6 жыл бұрын
I've rarely been able to play over the last year, but you never know I might get back into it someday. Scissors can be an effective way to force an overshoot, especially when there's a vertical or rolling element to it, but it's not a maneuver you can try to plan and initiate, it's more something that happens naturally after you see an opponent lining you up and you pull a hard turn to avoid him. Scissors depends a lot on how the other guy behaves.

Excellent guide, I'm just a little surprised you didn't do it before since the climbing spiral is such a big stick in your tool box. You mention that not every plane is capable of performing the rudder maneuver, which is basically why I don't use the maneuver very much myself, because I tend to fly stuff with weak rudders or poor agility in general (it's pretty much been all He219 since I got back). However, being so familiar with the maneuver has made it a lot easier for me to escape if and when I realize that someone's trying to trap me in a spiral, and maybe someday I'll fly more planes with good rudders in AB. The only suggestion I might have, which isn't actually a suggestion about the video itself, is some kind of list of aircraft with a rudder strong enough to do that version of the maneuver in AB. I don't mean you should make one, heck there might already be something like that on the forums somewhere, but it would be useful reference data to have on hand. I know I said it before, but It's really good to have you back in action. The skies felt lonelier just knowing that you weren't out there, roping some dope into a stall.

Another thing you can do with the mouse aim is pull your plane up and to the side while feathering the opposite aileron key to flatten the turn. This way, the rudder and elevator are handled by the mouse aim, leading to smoother controls and saving you some energy. In many cases, you can even pull the mouse back over the plane's shoulder, looking behind you and holding the plane in the spiral with the opposite aileron key, which will keep you from having to hold C in case your keyboard has a maximum input limit.

11:15 -- As always, great content, and thanks for listening. Here's a question for you, from the tactical pile. How often would you suggest using a climbing spiral, and, do you also suggest spiralling in the same direction most every time? Reason I ask is two-fold: one, it makes a target slightly more predictable to know which way he'll be turning, but two, as with rolling an aircraft with a piston-prop, there's going to be a bias in favour of the torque introduced by the prop. So, most aircraft should spiral in one direction faster than the other...?
@long5hot
@long5hot 8 жыл бұрын
Hmm, well I tend to use it whenever an opportunity for a rope-a-dope presents itself, usually when I spot someone trying to climb at me. I tend to spiral left because its easier for my fingers to hit the keys, but the number of times you face the same opponent in Arcade is very small, at least in T4 and below, so its highly doubtful this would make you predictable - and anyway the point of the maneuver is to make it extremely hard to be hit even if they know which way you're going to turn. I don't think prop torque plays any significant role in Arcade. It does in RB, though Mouse Aim's very good at canceling it out, and the torque direction depends of course on whether the prop spins clockwise or anti - not all planes are the same in that regard.

Your tutorials are fantastic. you and flip made me realize pilots make the planes not the other way. When began playing I thought the spitfires are crap cause I got killed countless times. After hundreds of games and lots of patience I managed to have equal ratio in deaths/kills in my tier 4 planes (so you can guess up to tier 3 i got my ass kicked really hard lol :P). 1 week ago I started playing germany and I have 2-1 3-1 ratio in some decent planes like this one and killing lots of higer rated planes with tier 1 planes like the he 112 b-0 and a-0. So...thanks a lot I enjoy the game much more now that I know how to actually play it regardless gettint my ass kicked or not :P

hey brother always loved your tutorials. Is there a mode to turn mouse aim on and off during a RB battle? cause I struggle in spirals during RB because my aimer/pipper seems to lock onto a direction and fight the rudder for spiraling, and always seems overide my 3rd person view, then hitting the "C" key, ill look at my plane from the side and then start spiral maneuvers but my ailerons and rudder cant spiral me it fights the locked on frontal view I just came from? Do you understand what im talking about? Because you just made me realize why I cant spiral climb its because I have mouse aim on during Air RB?

I love your channel, you do have a golden voice and diction and pacing- you should think about history and oration narration mate. On topic question? How's about a flow chart or a simple logical procession to help you decide based on engine and plane you are flying quickly whether you have a mechanical advantage? I bought books, and am studying aviation- but war thunders models and engine are not reality. If anyone should be writing the books on warthunder you're among them. Are there any good books you'd recommend on technical information as far as deflection firing and aerial tactics? Thank you so much for your content and your expertise and experience.

Again, excellent video Long5hot! I see why I could not see the target, I used mouse aim to control the maneuver, and occasionally pressed the C key to look down. But sometimes I find it difficult to use just the keyboard to perform the rudder spiral climb. I would like to get your insight in these three situations: 1st: When performing rudder spiral climb, do you always need a higher starting energy than your opponent, even if you have higher engine output (at the given altitude) and stronger rudder? 2nd: I fully spaded the La-9, and I play very well with it on arcade, using rudder spiral climb most of the time (even if sometimes im too careful and give time to the enemies to escape, but I generally survive in most matches), but when I try to do the same in realistic I get shotdown all the time. It's the maneuver valid for realistic? (Actually, nevermind this, I wrote the comment before watching the whole video). 3rd: In a friendly competition with a buddy of mine, we fought each other with two fully spaded Ki-43 I. Same starting energy for both pilots. I try to trick him to lose his by doing rudder spiral climb, but he shoots me down with no trouble. Can planes with excellent turn rate overwhelm you in this maneuver? Thanks for your work, it is very helpful.
@long5hot
@long5hot 8 жыл бұрын
1. If energy state is equal & the enemy is at close range you could try it. Perhaps if the enemy's at close range & faster, you could use it to force an overshoot. Otherwise no I'd go for some other tactic. 2. Extended rudder maneuvers are a bad idea in Realistic. They bleed speed like an air brake, and they're more likely to stall a wing than help you turn sharply. Save rudder turns for hammerheads & otherwise avoid them. 3. Ki-43s are not only great turners, they're very light planes that can keep control with their nose pointed upwards for far longer than most other fighters. Hence be very careful pulling a climbing spiral within guns range of a Hayabusa.

Long5hot, I have watched your video several times and I can do the spiral pretty good with just the mouse, but I cannot figure out which "look" or "camera" setup you are using to keep an eye on the enemy. C won't work cause the plane quits maneuvering and the same thing happens when I the enemy tracking camera......help!
@long5hot
@long5hot 6 жыл бұрын
When you're holding a key down that controls either elevators (pitch) or rudder (yaw), you can move the mouse to look around without needing to use C. Hence my tighter climbing spirals are performed using keys, which works extremely well in Arcade. In RB it may be possible to do this using elevator only (definitely no rudder) but the speed loss could be substantial so it'd have to be used only when there's an aggressive opponent beneath you with considerably less energy.
@CaptMike
@CaptMike 6 жыл бұрын
I must have something set up wrong. In any plane, when I hold down the pitch key and the rudder key together at the same time, my plane goes either hard up/down/right/left. It is so hard to control that I have no time to look around. I understand what you are doing and wish I could do the same. It is one of the main problems I must overcome to advance.

You know, every time I watch this video to practice this, I am perplexed with a problem, how to use these keys sparingly, especially the rudder keys, to which leads me to just break out my joystick as it has the rudder, and then I get frustrated and I go back to mouse aim and just give up on the spiral. lmao. I just had a few arcade matches with the stick and its no where near the polish I was developing with mouse aim. But I really want to develop the stick skill. Long5hot, can you tell me, do you have your rudder key set to trigger a slow development of the rudder, or is it all or nothing, as mine is? I checked your control video again and there isn't a mention of it. Thanks.
@long5hot
@long5hot 7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately with mouse aim / keyboard its all or nothing, there's no way to make it a slow trigger, or to define it such that the rudder only moves a certain percentage (which would be really useful in RB).
@chris_hisss
@chris_hisss 7 жыл бұрын
My biggest problem here, is that my nose pitches up too far. I went to try to practice with the 190, and full rudder doesn't make it turn as hard as say, the 109, which is what I was trying to practice with before. Also, is there a chance I might be able to see what keys you are pushing during this maneuver? There are some on screen key recorders that I seen people on twitch use, not sure. So, I am guessing you are holding down rudder (q), tapping roll (d) and occasionally tapping up (w) while holding down c to activate the free cam? Sorry, I mean I know you say it in the video, but simply saying "tapping roll" and in practice, I am having a terrible time. Thanks so much.
@long5hot
@long5hot 7 жыл бұрын
I'm actually holding up AND rudder constantly. If the plane pitches up too far, which often happens on planes with weaker rudders (usually American), I'll either temporarily release the up elevator OR tap the roll key to tip the plane over in the direction the rudder's pointing. I also tap the other roll key when the plane tips over too far & stops climbing. I never use C, there's no need as you can look around freely when you have a tail control key pressed.

It very much depends on the plane. If it turns well with elevators, eg. Spitfire, A6M, Ki-43, then flaps should be raised - the plane doesn't need them in this maneuver, they'll only bleed speed. For high-speed interceptors such as FW190s, La-5/7/9, some Yaks, Ki-84, you'll need combat flaps as the wings don't provide enough lift, without flaps you'll just be rudder-turning without climbing. However you will need to watch your speed closely & raise the flaps if it drops too low. Most USA fighters aren't good at climbing spirals, due to weak rudders plus the weight of many of those planes which loses them too much speed in such a tight maneuver.

Hi, I have some trouble. What you say at 5:37 ....how do you do: when you are using elevator key = mouse aiming is off?. When I use only elevator key withou "c" key, then mouse aiming is still working and this sux. Also when i use "c" key, before the mouse aiming will be off, i must first move camera to side and back. When I dont do this move with camera, then mouse aimnig is still on and it doesn´t matter "c" key holding. I really dont know how to fix it. I try to set up my settings as I see in same of your video in beginer guide, bud it still now working right. Thanks for video, it is very helpful and sorry for my english.
@long5hot
@long5hot 8 жыл бұрын
Ok, here's a test for you. Fly your plane straight & level, don't move the mouse, and now hold the up elevator key. Does the plane do a loop in front of you? Or does it ignore your keystroke and keep flying straight. If it performs a loop, mouse aim is indeed disabled as the plane's ignoring your mouse and obeying your keystroke. If it just keeps flying straight, it sounds like you don't have the key binding set properly.

I know what is problem. My keyboard has obviously broken "W" key (my elevator up) and when i was thinking "i´m holding W" it was just "presing W W W" key instead... and when i use it without "c" key, then plain was flying really crazy. I try diferent key for elevator and now it is working right. Thanks a lot. :)

Hey longshot your videos really have helped me out but i am stuck on something and that is i play the ps4 version and i use the crappy controller. Do you have any tactics on how to dog fight with the controller? My problem is i can evade attacks i stay up high but when i BmZ i just miss for some reason i can not hit anything at all when i am dog fighting i tried leading way above the circle and all around it all i ever do is minor hits i usually have to break off my attacks and give up. I am frustrated because your tactics work for PC but for the ps4 controller i am having a hard time. Any ideas on what to do? ( besides playing it on my PC which isn't that great of a platform)

You could always plug a mouse & keyboard into your PS4 ... As I haven't use a controller (I don't own a playstation) I haven't the experience to be able to suggest anything. If other PS4 players don't respond to you here, I recommend asking on the forum.warthunder.com and/or reddit.com/r/Warthunder

Thanks it really is a shame that ps4 controller is at a very terrible disadvantage i have played tons of flight sims and arcade games and although i am not the best in the world or even in my town i always have been able to hold my own in flight games. So ... what happens to your plane when you hit the rudder key? Either it will ignore your keystroke and fly toward the mouse, in which case your keystroke isn't working and you might want to bind different keys, or it will turn to the side to obey your rudder command in which case mouse aim is disabled while holding the key.

Unfortunately that's a bit too vague a topic on which to make a video. Can you be more specific?
@edrohhhhhhhhh
@edrohhhhhhhhh 8 жыл бұрын
Yes it is pretty vague. I mean something like, for example, a situation of 2 or more enemies vs oneself, both oponents coming from the 12 o'clock and you the only one in high altitude or same altitude as your oponents. Or another situation, you in the middle of a dogfight, one vs one and then another oponent join the dogfight.
@long5hot
@long5hot 8 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Thinking about it, all I can visualize is a bunch of examples from games rather than being able to condense it down to a tactic to employ. So much depends on what plane you're flying versus what the opponents are in, how much altitude you have to play with, and the skill level of your opponents.

you can...you just either have to have extremely flexible hands or re map the buttons...you can map side & rear views....if you use the second method heavy rudder, tapping the look behind button generally allows you enough visibility to get it done because the camera view swings ;) mapping rudder to numbers is hugely useful to pull it off as well.

Asking "How" the C-key works with preventing your aircraft from snapping back to original direction while performing manevuers is all I want to know.
@long5hot
@long5hot 3 жыл бұрын
If you're performing maneuvers using either elevator (pitch) or rudder (yaw) keys, you don't need to use the C key, not while you're holding at least one of those keys down. You can look around without C, and there's no snap-back. When you let go of those tail control keys, mouse aim will point the plane in the direction your cursor's facing rather than make the cursor return to the plane's heading.

@@long5hot Thanks for your reply! 👍 Lemme try to be more explicit... Or maybe I missed your point. Arcade mode - Test Flight Objective: Quickly change direction of flight 180° Example: Flying level with WEP/100% throttle. 1) I hold down A-key and roll plane 180° then... 2) I hold down S-key and flip the plane direction 90° then... 3) I release S-key and the plane *snaps back to original flight direction.
