I broke 9 needles on my Bernina 180 quilting a baby quilt. My client wanted me to use a camouflage bed sheet. She was doing the baby boy's room in camouflage. I now have a Bernina Q 20. loving the long arm. Side note I made a set of the leaders to pin to the side of the Quilt, loving this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No more sudden stops because of the ruler tray hitting the clamps, so madding! I am totally soaking up everything you teach. Thank you for sharing your beautiful talents ( teaching, quilting, sweet personality)

I have been using sheets as backing for years. No issues with them. I buy the 400 thread count sheets. Available in many colors, and less expensive than the same amount of fabric.

Hi Linda. Whatever works for you is great! I'm not a snob about what people use at all. I know that higher thread counts like with bed sheets and even some batiks as backings can be tougher on needles to get through - especially with intricate quilting. But really - you have found what works for you and that is all that matters! Happy Quilting! Michael

Very helpful needle tips, thank you 😊. I did have a question. Usually I use a low loft cotton batting due to it being very warm here. Recently I did a very high loft wool batting in a quilt destined for colder climates. I did baste, but as I was working down the quilt the portion that was getting rolled up on the back bar was getting quite smushed and wrinkled. Is this normal for high loft? Or is there something else I should be doing? Thank you 😊

Hi Louise - Thanks for your comment and question! Yes - the high loft batting or when you double batt, you will see wrinkles as you roll the quilt back and forth on the roller bars - just the nature of the frames. However, it does not take long for them to work out once off the frame, in most cases. I would not worry - the loftier battings have good springing action in most cases and will look great.
