The barrier islands should be converted back to natural coastlines what mother nature intended.

0:58 I took everything from the previous storage and put it in a basement right in the middle of a hurricane and flood zone.. brilliant.

🪛 all these people that live on these barrier Islands. Absolutely ridiculous to think that you will not be flooded out every single year. These people just moved here like 5 minutes ago and they knew all of the hazards and risks. I'm glad that the lesson came early for them.

This part of Florida had not been hit by an actual hurricane since 1946, until this one. You can't say that these people knew this would happen. Tropical Storms and Depressions, sure, plenty of those, but even Category 1 hurricanes were nearly unheard of in causing serious damage. Until Helene, there's a conspicuous hole from Tampa to North Port in the historical tracks that genuinely looks like some geographical or meteorological property of the area makes it extremely unlikely for storms to track through the area. It's entirely possible it won't happen again for an extremely long time.

TRASH all the buildings. Return our barrier islands & beaches to pristine marsh and sand. Make ALL the beaches into state parks

That’s right, it’s just stuff. Rebuild and wait for the next hurricane and 8 foot surge.

Governor DeSantis could make history in the right way and start to buy island properties in an effort to turn barrier islands back into their original purpose (barrier islands). The islands could be turned into state parks for the general population with entrance fees to cover the cost of upkeep but it would slowly “turn the tide” on the homeowners insurance debacle and save taxpayers billions in recovery costs. Of course, too much money is involved as it is, and his donors live on the islands, so that ain’t going to happen. Not to mention he isn’t an environmentalist so there’s that. Imagine someone in power doing the right thing just because it’s the right thing to do and nothing else. I DON’T WANT MY TAX DOLLARS SPENT CLEANING ISLAND SAND FROM ISLAND ROADS AND REFURBISHING BEACHES OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN ANYMORE.

Is this a joke? The median listing home price in Longboat Key, FL was $1.3M in August 2024 . Boo hoo.
