I am 75 yr old female. 290 days ago I started lifting weights and doing resistance Training. At the beginning I could only use 1.5 lb dumbells for 10 reps. I am now using 5lb dumbells for 25 reps of each exercise. Using KETO I have lost over 55lbs and over 30 inches over all. The quality of my life is so incredible. Everything is easier. I feel better now than I did at 50. It is ALL about the "Quality of life"! People who know me say I look 15 years younger now. I eat home grown grass fed beef and pork, 3 eggs every other day. My physical strength has increased exponentially. I can now grab a 50lb bag of dog food , no problem. INVEST IN YOURSELF, THE QUALITY OF LIFE IS WORTH IT.

At the beginning it looks as the guest was constantly confronted with presenter's theories without having the possibility to explain her own point of view. Now at 63 I continue to see positive results from the weights and walking. The information we have now days compared to what was available when I was young regarding training and nutrition is a real blessing. The healthier we live does give us a higher quality of life as we age. My GGF was a perfect example of this. He ate small meals mostly out of his own garden and got a lot of exercise in the process. He live to be 105 years old without taking any prescription drugs.

Dr. Lyon, I have watched many of your discussions on KZbin. This discussion on the importance of muscle mass was the best that I have seen. I am 74. I train with weights every other day at the gym always seeking slight progressive overload. I have been lifting weights since I was about twelve. Back then, I lifted weights to enhance my athletic abilities. I was a varsity lacrosse player in high school and college and played on a Division 1 nationally ranked team. Now, I train with weights and eat properly to extend my “health span”; not my “life span”. I supplement my diet daily with whey protein, collagen peptides, creatine, vitamins D3 and K2, zinc, and several other supplements. Although I’m not as strong as I used to be, I’m not an embarrassment at the gym. Finally, the above described lifestyle keeps my immune system strong. I am not vaccinated and have no intention of doing so. I sincerely believe that I would take a greater risk by injecting an experimental drug into my body than by maintaining my strength and eating properly.

You really only need to focus on getting the ESSENTIAL 9 amino acids. Specially Leucine. Sources of food with great amino acid profiles are ALL from animal sources. She was formerly vegan/vegetarian. Her pushing for animal based sources are purely off of research. She had stated in other interviews that if the research showed plant protein was superior for muscle growth or preservation, she would be pushing that. I see two people (Tom and Dr Gab) here who are passionate about health, fascinated with the skeletal muscle (the body, longevity, etc) .. and I personally love the passion and level of engagement in each and every one of Tom's interviews. I see a man who (although he knows ALOT about several subjects in regards to the health of the body/mind/success) continues to maintain a teachable spirit and is still willing to learn, soak up and increase his level of understanding pray 🙏🏾. I love this interview.. and although we could have also enjoyed just hearing her talk and explain for a hour her knowledge.. it appears that she (the female Dr) was really enjoying the conversational interview. Let's face it, I've interviews where the interviewer had questions, the interviewer answered and the interviewee was bored with the same old interview they've done before. I think that Dr Gab is getting her brain picked, she's having to really think, she's getting challenged with interesting question after question by Tom B... I really think that a truly knowledgeable interviewEE LOVES THAT AND ENJOYS THAT INTERVIEW EVEN MORE 😁. I think the interview was great for them both (Tom and Dr Gab).. it appears that they both greatly enjoyed it. Perhaps for me, some of the lingo and convo may have been a bit 'over my head' so I personally may have gotten more out of it if I hit PAUSE alot LOL so I can Google many of the terms used throughout the interview.

Listening to this while working out. She gave great information and for a guy like me who wants to add muscle this is important now-and as she explained its important for later in life too. Her comment on end of life being "brutal" watching others pass on woke me up for sure! As some other people commented here, I did think Tom interrupted her a bit too much and I would've rather heard her talk more; but Tom for the most part does really good interviews...learning situation and move forward.

I’ve watched a lot of these videos and love them, but I found this one frustrating because he talked over the guest so much! Not only that, but his language towards her was much more casual and felt a bit disrespectful at times. Saying “facts” is a dismissive response during such an important conversation. It gave the vibe that he didn’t respect this guest as much and his sign off of “this was fun” kind of proved it in comparison to other interviews.

Payton Nelsin - I guess it hasn't occurred to many here, including you, that Tom was using what many have termed a fun and stimulating Socratic interviewing style. I recognize it bc I have had the pleasure of experiencing the Socratic teaching style in univ courses. It is an unbelievably fun and stimulating way to learn. Here's a brief Wikipedia outline of the Socratic method... 'The Socratic method is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions. There😉...hopefully this will shut everybody up about Tom's incessant 'interrupting' interviewing style.

I like to think of these episodes as conversations rather than traditional interviews. When I look at it through that lens, the interruptions aren't bothersome. Tom may have a lot to say, but he's also trying to learn, and the best way to do that is through active engagement.

You do not need glucose to live. You can live off fats. When I read Guyton it said carbohydrates protect fats, fats protect protein. If you don't eat carbohydrates your body will deplete its carb reserves in 48 hours. So a zero carb diet is a good start. As long as you consume carbs you can't burn fat, however it is said that you can now go keto with MCT oil. I went on a zero carb diet for a year. The human body turns the proteins of nine essential amino acids in food into us, our own arrangement of them to continue living. Two essential amino acids for muscle building and to prevent wasting muscles are Branch Chain Amino Acids Leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These are anabolic for muscle. A metabolite we make that we don't get enough of from them is HMB. HMB is an anticatabolite preventing muscle breakdown and speeding repair. We need energy from ATP in our mitochondria to produce muscle and everything else. The normal process is the glucose pathway which includes the Krebbs cycle that requires NAD+. Right now the best source of NAD+ is called NMN. It's a derivative of Naicin vitamin B3 but unlike B2 and NR it has a phosphorolated component. To preserve NAD+ through what is called the salvage pathway you need NAMPT which can come from Quercetin and R-alphalipoic acid, Methylation which can come from TMG, an blocking some of CD38 which can be done with apigenin. AKG may be the best fuel available for ATP since it is one NAD+ step from exiting the Krebbs cycle at succinyl CO A heading towards squalene needed to make hormones and converting ADP to ATP. There's another pathway starting with tryptophan to Make NAD+ If you don't use the salvage pathway NAD+ will not be recycled and will end up at NADH which won't work. Another useful supplements is the combination of NAC and glycine which makes glutathione, the master antioxidant. There are many other vital components for good health such as vitamin D and many essential minerals. Is learning all of this hard? Yes, you need to study the biochemistry of life and keep up with the latest research. But it is your life so it's really up to you to learn it.

"It's about the quality of life." I'm so thankful she said that. I feel like it isn't mentioned enough in health communities. Everyone scrambling and clamoring to add 5 10 20 years to your life. Well those years from the age of 75 to 90 often include the loss of friends as they die. Social ostracization. Diminished social engagement. Diminished physical capacity. Relegation to the fringes. A loss of mobility and purpose. I for one do not want to prolong those years. I will be perfectly content to die in and around 75 years of life. In fact that is my preference. Too much attention is paid to going on forever. Have you seen what 95-year-old people look like and are like? Most of them? No thank you.

Tom is spot on IMO. The body DOES NOT think long term. For example it I isn’t going to hold onto fat in a starving state because it’s thinking ahead. The body isn’t going to pay for muscle if the muscle isn’t needed for survival NOW. Muscle is created due to environmental stimuli demanding you adapt now or die. So you body builds muscle for the NOW and will get rid of it for the same reason because it is expensive to sustain.
