Embraer is a well-known name in the regional jet market, with thousands of aircraft sold to carriers globally. However, Airbus - through its acquisition of the Bombardier CSeries - has shaken up the industry with the A220, which is considered one of the best regional jets in the market. Today, we take a look at the latest offerings side-by-side to determine which plane is best.

Hard to call the A220 a regional jet. It’s a small narrowbody whose efficiency allows it to fly very far. Embraer has always made true regional jets, small and nippy. i’ve never flown either of two, but i’ve heard great things about both, so i’m looking forward to my first flights with them.

If you calculate their per passanger kilometer efficiencies, both are very similar. The a220 flies further basically bc it has 60% more fuel, not bc of greater eficciency

The Embraer jets and their 2-2 seat configuration are a superior flying experience with larger seats and more room than the 2-3 airbus product. As a former Jetblue employee I have had many flights on the e190 and it was my favorite flying experience ever- it feels like a much larger jet.

Are you sure the seats are larger in the Embraer? Looking online, I'm seeing the seat width for the E195-E2 listed as 18.3 inches and the width of the A220 seats listed as 18.6 inches. Based on that, it looks like the A220 actually has slightly larger seats. This would make sense, since even though it is a 3-2 configuration, the body of the plane is wider to compensate. Regardless both of these planes have larger seats than the A320 and 737 so I'd still rather fly either the E195-E2 or A220 over the 737 or A320.

Aside from the A220 turning out to be a game changer, Embraer gambled on the scope clause getting updated for sales to US regional airlines. That hasn't happened, and the E175-E2 hasn't won a single order yet (while the previous-generation E175 is still flying off the lot, so to speak). Interesting that Canada's Porter Airlines, which had once planned to buy what was then called the Bombardier C-Series (opposition to jets based at Toronto Billy Bishop airport killed the deal) ended up ordering E2s, which will be based at Toronto Pearson. They must have gotten a great deal. I'm hoping to fly on one before too long, though I think they're sticking with Dash-8s on flights to my hometown of St. John's.

living in switzerland, I have experienced several short-haul flights through europe on both aircrafts. Swiss has many A220s while Helvetic has an exclusive Embraer fleet with mainly E190/195-E2 and 4 E190-E1. I like both and think it is a personal choice which one you prefer. In my case as half-brazilian of course I love to fly on the Embraers. In Brazil used to fly weekly between Rio and Campinas with Azul on their older ERJs with the 2-1 configuration. These flights give you the feeling of being in a private jet because they are so tiny and lightweight. What is missing in this report is to point out that the operation cost of the E195-E2 is largely lower than the A220, with almost the same number of passangers transported. that is why the E2 is called "profit hunter", and I wonder why not more airlines have decided in favour of this aircraft which really allows to reduce costs considerably.

I do think some airline prefer the range of the A220 compare to the E-Jets since most of these airlines that ordered the A220 are mostly legacy carriers or leisure carriers I mean I certainly wouldn’t call them low-cost airline like Ryanair. If a airline is solely having the airplane for range then they might just want a small airplane with a greater range to target smaller airport or regions. The E-Jets is pretty much very well suited to short hops destination and airport that has a very high demand and I mean, technically, that’s what a regional airplane is. (Since regional airplane mostly serve for the purpose of connecting destination to Hubs) Most people can dispute the reasons but range might be the reason.

The A220 development has been heavily subsided by the Canadian government, so its slaw price is competitive against the E2-Jets. While the listing prices are equivalent, the A220 uses much more expensive materials so achieves a better fuel economy in the end.

This is the comparison we have all been waiting for! The A220 was meant to compete with the E195-E2, after all, when Airbus acquired the A220, Boeing quickly tried to enter into a partnership with Embraer and to aquire their commercial aircraft.

I don't think the A220 is in the same category as the 195-E2, one was made to operate short routes with low demand and high cost benefit (195), the other is being acquired to operate long routes with more versatility on the cabin configuration(220-300). The 220 has a different purpose, and it may affect not the 195 sales only, but certainly the A320 neo sales.

As Simple Flying states in this video, Embraer's E195-E2 does NOT COMPETE with the Airbus A220-300. Rather, the largest Embraer commercial airliner only competes with the smallest Airbus product, the A220-100. Looking at the market under this perspective, Embraer has, indeed, outperformed Airbus, with more firm orders (source: Wikipedia): - E195-E2: 245 firm orders - A220-100: 93 firm orders Of course, lots of airlines place orders for aircraft FAMILIES, not just individual subtypes, which is why lots of airlines have placed orders for the A220-300, with the expectation it may be further extended into A220-500. Embraer's commercial strategy only focuses on the sub-150 passenger market, avoiding direct competition with Boeing and Airbus.

The E2 is a great airplane (kind of crazy when you consider its engine diameter is almost the same as the fuselage diameter), but its higher weight means it got shafted by the Scope clause which limits its use by US regional carriers which are the main users of the previous generation E jets. Without its bread and butter regional airline customers, that means the E2 needs to sell to the larger scale airlines where its shorter range and smaller capacity becomes a bigger factor when these airlines are deciding to purchase an aircraft and that does put it in direct competition with the smaller A220 variants. Hopefully the Scope clause gets adjusted by the time the regional carriers need to replace their fleets (I believe most previous gen E jets in the US aren't that old)
@zombiedodge1426
@zombiedodge1426 11 ай бұрын
Outside of Brazil and except for KLM , I'm noticing it's mostly smaller and regional carriers (Wideroe, Porter, Binter Canarias) opting for the E2 while "legacy" airlines choose the A220. From all indications the E2 customers are happy with it, but they really need a home-run order from Air India or something like that.
@aviatorsound914
@aviatorsound914 10 ай бұрын
@@zombiedodge1426 I mean there could also be a reason of range since ultimately it is based off of the airlines operational model because if it’s short hops to connect to different hubs then the E-Jets is your best option but if you’re trying to fly a long range and would like the airplane that is similar to the capacity of the E-Jets in order to connect to smaller destination then the A220 is your best option.
@widget787
@widget787 2 ай бұрын
They expected the scope clause to get changed but it didn't happen. Their problem is that the 175E1 still sells extremely well (okay, on the one hand it's good for them, but not for the E2). The 175E1 fleets are pretty young and will not need replacement for a long time. I fear that until they need replacement there will be another whole new generation of aircraft using a different technology maybe, so the 175E2 is not competitive anymore then.

Actually if airlines want to get a regional aircraft E2 family is the best option in the market. The only question mark is its PW engine. These engines aren't reliable. A220-300 is more like a standard narrow body aircraft like A319 and B737-7. It has more passenger capacity and more range. E195-E2 is the best option for the big airlines which wants to pump their network with some smaller cities. However American laws concider it is not a regional jet. This is why it sells less than A220 family.

The A220 is not a regional jet either. The -300 has slightly more seats but it's heavier too. I think cost a seat mile is pretty similar, however overall operating cost are higher for the A220. So the Airline must be able to sell these extra seats to make the A220 work.

Having flown on both (Helvetic and swiss) I was very surprised on the E2 it was bright, spacious, comfortable and relaxing. The A220 was nice but since flying on the E2 it has really been the benchmark (pains me to say as a staunch Airbus man). As a single isle short hall A/C i give the E2 8/10 and the A220 gets 6.5/10 from me. Wrt the A220 just stick to the tried and trusted A320 NEO the A220 felt a bit lost and unfamiliar and regretably if one finds themselves sitting at an overwing exit, wrap up. There is a nasty thermal bridge somewhere and ITS COLD, really cold.

Although A220 has greater range and biggest variant greater capacity, E2 is cheaper, more versatile in short haul routes and consumes less fuel. Also it can be integrated fast into fleets of current Embraer operators, as almost no trainings is required to switch from one type to another and maintenance personnel can be learned faster as although being heavily modernized, it still shares a lot of commonalities with older generation.

While Embraer may list lower prices, we don't know what are the actual prices Airbus has been selling the A220 for. Given how the Canadian government has been financing the whole project and Embraer has bills to pay, I bet that Airbus is in a much better position to undercut Embraer.

Speaking of regional jets, is the Superjet 100 still a thing? I've read that Russia's UAC sold the program to a UAE company, *and* that they're working on a "sanctions-proof" version without Western components. Either way, Russian airlines will need *something* in this class, and the A220/E2/MAX 7 are no longer available to them. Even the COMAC ARJ21 is out because it has so many Western components. Time for a Tu-134 Neo or Yak-40 MAX, perhaps?

The runway length discussion is flawed. Carriers have been using the A220 to service much shorter runways by capping loads. The A220 can service sub-5,000' runways easily by capping the passenger counts to the 140 passenger range. So it really is an extremely versatile jet, which is why jetblue will use them to replace the E190 servicing very short runways like EYW, MVY, ACK, etc.

For the narrow body, embraer E2 is the most efficient aircraft, and in the future, embraer will introduce embraer 195e2 LR to match 3000nmi range. For Airbus, a220 is a big win when they took it from bombardier. They could use them to replace all a320 family as a220-900Lr or even a221LR in the long term. For Boeing, bring back 717 and make the larger version such as 717-300.

I think Boeing regrets shutting down the 717 and 757 programs (or not creating replacements when they had the chance). Though the 717 lives on, sort of, as the Chinese COMAC ARJ21.

The 717 was a renewed version of the dc-90, if Boeing wanted to re-enter the small jets market, they would definetelly need to develop a clean sheet design to be able to meet modern expectations

As stated on Porter's website, here is the answer - Given the A220 family's popularity, Airbus has amassed a massive backlog of nearly 600 aircraft, significantly delaying deliveries. The E2's backlog is currently only around 200, meaning customers could likely get their planes much faster.

I prefer flying in an E170 aircraft fitted with a turbo-prop engine. I frequently fly commercial which takes just 1hr: 10mins into low capacity airports in my country, so both A220 and E190 E2 will not do. Embraer should consider building one.

Boeing was afraid they will lose out to Delta with their Boeing 737-Max 7 offering vs the Bombardier CS-300 so played the "they are dumping unfairly" card. End result, Airbus bought off Bombardier for a $1 or something ridiculous since Bombardier ran out of money to sustain the program. How Bombardier mismanaged the program is a different story though.

The A220 is having a lot of problems but no one seems to notice. Engine problems, bleed problems, avionics problems, and worst of all it does not have the promised range. It can do about 2200 nm only. Same engine but the E2 uses a flat rated engine while the C-series uses a variable rate FADEC.
