They do occasionally have an odd oversight like this. Thinking to the Nope review, they couldn’t figure out why the tube guys were used in the final act but it was laid out pretty early on why they use those to track the alien.

Marketing was both the best and worst thing to happen to this movie. It is a really well made movie and very enjoyable, but if you buy into the marketing of it being the scariest thing you’ve ever seen then there’s a good chance you’ll leave disappointed

There's a scene in the movie where someone leaves a major clue in her house and she never files it into evidence or tells anyone else on her team. And I think she's actually supposed to be on the spectrum in the film, so that's why she's acting so off.

Yup, I thought she was supposed to be on the spectrum too, I am on the spectrum. Also her strange upbringing would play a part in her personality as well. She is extremely introverted. One of the most scenes that stands out is how uncomfortable she is meeting her boss's family.

I think it's less to do with the idea of her being on the spectrum and more to do with her personal backstory that involves the case of Longlegs along with that twist near the end which explained why Lee Harker came across as offbeat and off kilter throughout the film.

Stop diagnosing yourselves with tik tok videos. All of us have troubles, traumas, ocd and some strangeness in our behavior. It doesn’t make us all UNUSUAL. I swear, the other day I saw a video of a person saying she’s on a spectrum cause she can’t concentrate on one thing and constantly shifts her mind between lots of stuff she needs to do. Well boohoo. We all got this. It’s a human trait. It’s normal.

Ngl, I think not having the supernatural part on it would be better, I think people believing that stuff and doing inhumane things from that belief is more terrifying than actually being controlled or told to do things from a big bad demon/devil. I also think had longlegs been a p3do or preditor would have upped the disturbing quality. I thought that was the angle going after little girls.

On his appearance looking odd. From watching the director talk, and clues in the movie, I believe his appearance is like that because he tried to make himself look like a doll. @unwashedheathen4897

That's actually wrong. The reason he looks that way is because he is a former glam-rock singer. The plastic surgery part is right. The makeup is a throw back to bob dylan when he did it. Cage and the director said these things in interviews.

I saw LongLegs. It's Se7en with the retro aesthetic of Fincher's Mindhunter and a dash of Lynchian Twin Peaks weirdness. Cage is having a blast. I enjoyed Monroe's character too. It was intriguing watching her react to social situations and piece together the mystery. I think it falters in the second half with the reveal of what's going on. There's a lot of ambiguity and that's fine. I enjoyed the chemistry between Harker and Carter, she's like a high functioning autistic child and he is her doting Uncle that wants her to come out of her shell. You can tell Nic Cage was having a blast with this. I remember getting a weird sense of unease and hilarity whenever he was on screen. The hardware store scene and the aftermath are probably going to be the most memed on scenes (MOOMMY!DADDDY!) The makeup and prosthetics crosses over into the uncanny valley ( He looks like Freaky Fred from Courage the Cowardly Dog and A Bogdanoff Twin) and then at the same time, his voice and mannerisms are so familiar that you can't do anything but say that's Nic Cage. Again, I feel like it falters in the second half reveal of what is really going on. Not to write my own movie but I feel like it would have been better if it had turned out that there was no supernatural element at all. True Detective and Se7en pull this off extremely well, to where, the investigation hints at the supernatural but it turns out to just be a depraved killer. It's much more compelling. B -/ C+

This one of those movies where I see the issues but I still like it. Creepy atmosphere aided by great cinematography and I found Cage effective. The main character really isn't one though, she's a vessel for the audience. I was hoping that this would be more of a mystery and instead its a tragedy slowly unfolding. Martin says it's just a collection of other horror tropes thrown together, true but I found it more of an effective homage. However my big issue with this film and others like it is the fact that satanic horror is stuck in the past, no one has figured out how to make an effective satanic themed horror film that reflects modern day concerns.

Wow, you guys actually got to this one I saw this last Wednesday at my local movie plex Good but not great Oz Perkins directs a psychological thriller starring Maika Monroe and Nicholas Cage The movie plays much like an old school 1970s chiller containing clever tricks of the eye; it utilizes atmosphere, dark shadows in the background, ambient noises, and certain parts are shot in full frame mode almost like a classic film reel projector There’s definitely ‘Silence of the Lambs’ vibes going on Maika Monroe is awesome playing this woman who barely remembers fragments of her own past being a mystery while solving this current one Nicholas Cage comes off appropriately scary and hilarious simultaneously barely being recognizable under all that heavy makeup The twist was a total surprise that caught me off guard although I do understand most viewers will be frustrated by the direction it goes once it reaches the third act There’s biblical elements sprinkled in too making these murders more unsettling There are shortcomings when it comes to plot and horror cliches mind you but the film is very effective making some chilling moments work thanks to Perkins’ direction being a somewhat love letter to classic slashers

And I get that her character was meant to be in a daze from her ‘connection’, but it was overplayed and made her character boring as hell. She could have shown a bit more emotion (or normalcy) and then got back in daze mode when she was being triggered. It was like Frankenstein’s movie. I find the movie to be intensely creepy, I found the characters engaging, the movie gas great atmosphere, the movie kept me guessing and the ending is terrifying to me. I had mixed feelings about Cage, but more often than not I found him quite effective. There were 2 parts where he went so Cage that it took me out of the movie, but his final scene with Maika Monroe was great imo. It maces all these tropes we have seen before to great affect as far as I am concerned. I would rate it a high MATINEE from your rating system. Well worth my time.

I knew what to expect and really enjoyed myself. The movie is a slow burn yet for me it flew by. Its unfortunate that people buy into the marketing to such an extent. Its like watching a restaurant comercial and wondering why the product wasnt as large or immaculate as the comercial portrayed. You should know that marketing is hyperbolic in nature.

Glad you guys are talking about this! It's been interesting to see how a certain vocal minority of people feel like this film is bad. I saw it and before hand I had seen some spoiler free reviews where the reviewers harped on the ending for supposedly being nonsensical. I went in expecting the ending to be totally out of left field but when it happened I found it to be 100% understandable in light of the narrative the movie was constructing. I enjoyed this film a lot and found it to be dripping in atmosphere. It wasn't jumpscary or obvious which I think is why is a certain percentage of audience members who aren't used to thinking of horror in a more subtle or atmospheric way are disappointed. That, and the marketing was so damn effective that it convinced a lot of people this would be the "scariest movie ever" and set expectations way too high.

I think it is the vocal majority that are overhyping it. Glad you enjoyed it, but the story was slow and underwritten. Without the twist/exposition/story dump, most of the story would not make sense or be interesting. And based on the comments, there are still a lot of unexplained aspects of the story.

I'm glad you guys are one of the few honest reviews about this film, I was tricked by the hyperbolic and deceiving PR campaign, and I don't like to be tricked. (The comparison of "The Silence of the Lambs" was ridiculous, not even close.) For me, this movie is a litmus test to judge a movie critic I respect the critics that didn't follow the hype train, and I will question the integrity of those who did from now on.

People that think this is the scariest movie they've seen in the last decade aren't horror movie fans. And as far as Nick Cage goes, those same people didn't see him in Mandy, Color Out of Space, or Vampire's Kiss from the 80's. He did an amazing job as Long Legs but he's essentially already played that character several times before. He did that same 'screaming in the car scene' in Mandy.

The moment Nic shows himself in minute 4 or something, it took all the momentum the film had away from me, it made me laugh out loud when he was singing and just being Nic Cage. Such a shitshow movie, if people actually think this is scary, there is something seriously wrong with horror fans...

The atmosphere and leads were great and the mystery hooked me. A man getting people to commit heinous acts but steps foot in the house. The. They add the dolls which added more creepiness to the movie. Then I see the reveal and IMO everything went down hill.

The film was incredibly intriguing for the first 2 acts but, by then, I figured out it had 2 options for the ending. One paranormal and one based in logic. The direction they chose was a disappointment to me. I still liked the film, but I didn't love it like so many others.

The hype for this being such a scary movie was a bit overblown, but it was a solid film with a very creepy tone. Not as scary as the marketing made it out to be, but I enjoyed it. It's a better fourth season of True Detective than Night Country.

They're talking about the scariness of it because that's the way it was marketed. It was the same for hereditary and people came out like....why did you promote this movie this way? It was good as it is, a drama with horror elements, without the "this is the SCARIEST MOOOOVIE." I still enjoyed the movie, to a lesser degree with nick cage, but they did a disservice with the promotion.

The hype around this film reminds me of the hype around the Blair Witch Project (the original). Everyone was saying it was so scary and terrifying. Then, me and my dad went to see it in theaters and we both fell asleep! I slept through a good fifteen or twenty minutes of that movie. So, I don't pay much attention to hype surrounding a movie anymore.

Watched this last night. I enjoyed the mood and vibe of the film, it definitely had hints of Se7en, Silence of the Lambs - as far as tone and look. In trying to find out just what the heck is going on, the ride it takes you on was enjoyable. The film kinda fell flat to me by the end. This is NOT a 'scary' film. You guys are right; people in the theater laughed at some points, me included. Not sure how much that can be helped once Nicholas Cage is involved. In the end, it's not that good; I'd say it's definitely overhyped as far as 'horror'. 4/10. The filmmaking is good, but it came off as gimmicky in the end.

This is definitely one of my favorite Cage performances. Like in any other movie, it would be a hilarious meme worthy performance but in this movie it’s scary and unsettling as hell. Like Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs and the killer from True Detective season 1 come off more normal than this guy. If you’ve seen either of those, you know that’s saying a lot.

The marketing and the trailer are both better than the actual movie. The plot is extremely barebones, even for a horror movie. It felt like the script was an hour long, and then the director had to stretch it for another 40 minutes to have a theatrical release time. There are so many long shots of characters staring off into space or walking through dimly lit areas. It reminded me a lot of DragonBall Z where characters would power up for 10-15 seconds just to kill time and stretch the show out. I
