This was the cinematographer's DEBUT?!? I saw Longlegs last night (also in a packed theater) and couldn't believe how good the movie looked. Very impressive and I hope this guy gets a lot more work in the future because it's well deserved.

Yeah it was. I don’t think Perkins, is very good at hiding the mystery, or with past movies, its mood over substance. I knew what the twist was, very quickly, and even saw the supernatural aspect, far too soon. I thought Monroe did very well, and Cage was perfect as that character. I just think giving him supernatural powers, with just _satan gives followers powers_ being the explanation, was lazy writing. It would’ve been a better movie, had they shown him pull it off, without powers from Satan. I liked it better, than when k first watched The Blackcoats Daughter, which was also mostly mood, over what is actually happening. It’s a long way to go, just to connect two completely different looking people, who are only 8 years apart in age. It’s a lazy tactic to use, just so the audience doesn’t immediately know who they both are. Shipka is excellent, and Roberts gave one of the few performances, that I’ve ever enjoyed from her. Longlegs was just the right length, but I don’t think it’s a classic, because anyone who watches a lot of movies, and/or has read a lot of books, can see everything that’s happening, very early on, and then Monroe’s character, just stands and watches so many get killed, before she finally starts taking down threats, only for us to know he’s within her now, snd she’s taking over the work.

I just saw it with a fairly full theater in the afternoon in NYC. I thought the first two acts of the movie were great, but the final act (and especially the revelation/resolution) were a complete letdown that ruined the entire experience. It starts as an intriguing and stylish serial killer thriller / mystery and ends up as a hacky and completely derivative supernatural horror lacking even internally consistent logic. I had no problem with the performances - and the cinematography and editing were even quite good - but the story itself was simply hokey, predictable, and worst of all given the marketing - barely even creepy. I just don't understand the hype for this movie. 5/10 for me, won't watch again unless convinced.

I'm happy the movie is working for a lot of people but it didn't work for me. You said the resolution of the film will make or break the film and for me it broke it. For a movie to be such a slow burn the ending needs to leave an impact whether that be catharsis, awe or devastation and the the ending just didn't evoke much for me. Without spoiling i could see where the ending conflict would take place from a mile away, and right before that the movie basically just sits and explains to you the plot for 5 minutes so you understand how it all work so it really took me out of it. Ill appreciate it for its technical aspects and performances which are top notch i just wish the story lived up to it.

Oh you have an age appropriate daughter with a birthday coming up... Word. No way that's coming back up at all. Also the locked door and her mom asking about the prayers... This movie's plot is anything but subtle. Some of the writing felt stiff, not sure if it was the delivery or what but I often went "... Okay?". It felt like someone wanted to combine hereditary, the witch, and seven but didn't really know how to capitalize on what made those movies special in that movie smoothie. (I haven't seen silence of the lambs so maybe that should be in there too). The ending also confuses me as to what the goal is now that longlegs is dead. Who's going to make the dolls now? Do the dolls matter? Seems like the point is really to get the cursed sphere in the house, everything else was set dressing? Overall it's still okay, I'd give it a 6/10 maybe.
@Nelly34e4 ай бұрын
You found the movie slow? I was constantly on edge, curious where it was going. About halfway through I figured where it was going but wasn’t sure why. Never found this slow though. While I wish the ending had a different payoff, it didn’t ruin the rest of the movie, which was great.
@brianng83504 ай бұрын
@@Nelly34eNothing really happens for most of the movie - flashbacks and case studies. The whole movie is pretty much set up for the big explanation close to the end. Like Dan said, the payoff was not enough for the journey.
@larryvonkrukenfeld20754 ай бұрын
This film just left way too many unanswered questions for me. Like why is he called Longlegs? That’s never explained at all. What’s the significance of the 14th? Where’s Harker’s father and why would Longlegs choose a family with no father when the father was integral to all of his other murders? What’s the deal with all the glam rock music? I was really expecting that to be relevant at some point. What’s the point of the derivative Zodiac-style coded messages when they don’t really reveal much important information? All that information could be revealed in a better and less generic way. Why didn’t Harker go after Longlegs when he broke into her house? Why didn’t she realise that Ruby was about to be the next victim? Both of those things are really inexplicable for a character who’s otherwise very decisive and observant. Why exactly does the doll make Harker psychic? Was the murderer at the start of the film part of the Longlegs murders? As soon as the movie ended I had to google it to see if any of these things were explained and I’d somehow missed them, but that wasn’t the case. There are so many red herrings that it basically just feels badly-written.
@Imjusthereforkicks4 ай бұрын
Yes I felt like I had more questions at the end of it 😶 I’m all for ambiguity but I feel like there was just a bunch of plot points that were just thrown in there that make no sense. I agree that this movie will benefit from multiple viewings.
@CritterOverYonder4 ай бұрын
Let me offer some suggestions. Spoilers: Why is he called Longlegs? This is explained in the opening scene. He says something to the effect of "looks like I have my long legs on today" and then he bends down to speak to Harker. It's something he would say to little kids before he bends down to their level. What’s the significance of the 14th? I believe that's Harker's birthday, and her family was the first victim. Also, being in the middle of the month allows him to build the symbolic algorithm. If it was earlier or later in the month, he wouldn't have the 6-day buffer to build out the triangles. Why would Longlegs choose a family with no father when the father was integral to all of his other murders? Harker's family was presumably the first attempted murder, and he was going to do the killing himself (essentially assuming the father role). When he built out the serial plot with Harker's mom, it shifted to have the father do the killing instead of Longlegs. What’s the deal with all the glam rock music? The movie takes place in the 90's, but Longlegs is seemingly stuck in the 70s. With the dawn of bands like Black Sabbath, this was the beginning of the "Satanic Panic" era, which has largely been discredited as overblown. But what if Longlegs actually did find the devil in the music? What’s the point of the derivative Zodiac-style coded messages when they don’t really reveal much important information? They were used so Longlegs could speak directly to Harker, she was the only one who could decode them. Why didn’t Harker go after Longlegs when he broke into her house? Why didn’t she realize that Ruby was about to be the next victim? She had met Longlegs many times before but didn't remember him, so the spell he has over her blinds her to certain things. Admittedly, Harker acts very strangely throughout the film, but I think it can be chalked up to the orb controlling her. It's important to remember that Harker is a pawn on Longlegs first, and an FBI agent second. Why exactly does the doll make Harker psychic? As far as her psychic abilities, they are all tied to getting her integrated into the Longlegs case. Every time she is "highly intuitive," it impresses her superiors and gets her more integrated into the case. This is what Longlegs wanted. Was the murderer at the start part of the Longlegs murders? I don't think so. I think it was just a random serial killer. But it got Harker put on the Longlegs case, which is what Longlegs wanted the whole time.

Perfect example of a great idea executed less than perfectly. Great Cinematography, acting, direction; but the writing gets in the way

Well put. Can't wait especially because of the marketing which was soo good.

Movie reminded me a bit of prisoners in a certain way, without spoiling.

Your review has me pumped. I always trust your opinion, and our tastes mostly align. I've been pretty excited about this movie, but my expectations have been tempered because I haven't really enjoyed any other movies Perkins has made. The Blackcoats Daughter was just fine for me, but it's also fairly forgettable to me. I Am The Pretty Thing was a slog, and I couldn't make it through Gretel and Hansel. That's just me though. Got tickets for a Sunday matinee showing, and I am stoked.

The ending was well worth it, great climax. Pacing was somewhat problematic, but overall a fairly decent movie, I changed my rating from 5 1/2 out of ten to a solid 8 1/2.

I just went to a completely full cinema screening, the last time that happened was when I watched Avatar The Way of the Water on opening day, I didn't even pre-book and was shocked when I had to grab one of the last few seats

Loved the review!! I really enjoyed the movie even though it wasn't the "scariest" movie ever. The cinematography and slow burn was done so perfectly as it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. NICOLAS CAGE ALSO WAS VERY CREEPY AND UNCANNY! Worth a rewatch for me 😎

My theater was sold out for a Sunday matinee. This movie is definitely a hit for NEON. I loved it but felt the same about the end as you did.

Id say ALL Cage gives in anything is "One Note"....100 percent unhinged but STILL one note.

Loved the first half to 2/3ish but I honestly wasn’t a big fan of Nic Cage’s performance and the final act pretty much fell flat for me. Lots of loose threads, unanswered questions and what basically felt like missing plot points for me. It looked beautiful though and I do think it’s something I might watch again to see if I missed any clues along the way

Just watched it and thought Nicholas Cage was incredible. The movie was good but I really felt Cage's performance and the intrigue around his character, elevated this film

The movie had all the ingredients to be the perfect horror film, The first 30 minutes were incredible building up the horror but the payoff definitely let me down. I think the standards were set too high with marketing and critics. Still a great film regardless, amazing actors and cinematography.

How scary is it relative to something like Smile? I wana see it but I can’t handle another smile level scary movie 😂😂💀
@brennan2854 ай бұрын
@@Moobeus to me, Smile was terrifying just because I had no clue what it was about. Longlegs atmosphere is dread-filled and dark but there’s not many jump scares so I think you should be able to handle it!
It's much less "conventional horror" than Smile (which I also enjoyed) - fewer monsters, jump scares, and kills. Much more psychological, though with a lot of creepiness, disturbing elements and a few jump scares.

Anyone who saw Mandy will appreciate that there is a lot to be said for keeping Cage restrained. Preferably with a director and cinematographer who don't share his fondness for LSD and mushrooms.

For a movie that is a slow burn AND the mystery was pretty obvious AND there isn’t much to the story beyond that. To fail at the end just about crashes the landing for me. I do like the performances and the camerawork, but that’s it

This is a good film that could have been great if it wasn't for the jump scare soundtrack. I had to cover my ears throughout the film, since the industrial score and stingers gave me a headache. When something is visually scary, we don't need the jump scare to emphasize it. It's distracting and frustrating.

I appreciated the art of the movie, the way it’s shot, the scenes and outfits, and the acting. The plot wasn’t tight enough for me, I felt like the conclusion felt like an easy way out of a good set up
