I think it’s a great unit, I had one a few years back and personally I think it’s a lot quieter than my on board generator on my 05 Jamboree.

I'm a pilot and have a dedicated 5 gal. gas can for 100 octane low-lead gas (100LL). Airplanes use this for a few reasons: it has more power and the low-lead content bathes the valves for longer life, plus no ethanol, which acts poorly at altitudes and is prone to vapor lock. Planes were designed for this gas and little engines today love it too. It has been explained to me by mechanics and users like tree-trimmers, lawn maintenance people that the ethanol mixed into most car gas eats the little rubber/plastic parts of little engine carbs. This is why car gas over time causes problems. I use this in off-road air cooled engines. Costs a little more and you have to go to an airport. I plan to use this gas in a generator along side propane. It makes a pleasing exhaust smell. Or maybe it just reminds me of flying? :)

I purchased the Champion Genny and am really pleased. Like you, I love love love love the remote start.The last time I camped this season, it snowed. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, wants to get all dressed up and go outside in the middle of the night to fire up a generator. I'm now a generator snob for the champion.

We bought a 3400W dually earlier in the year for our Newfoundland expedition. I broke it in properly and it performed flawlessly, until we came home. I noticed it was getting slightly louder with every run. I called their customer service and it was absolutely excellent. He set me up to have it inspected, locally. Come to find out, the muffler broke the weld at the head. They sent a new muffler and all has been right ever since. Great little generator, it runs my 15K AC and microwave at the same time. I haven't run it on propane yet, but I love it for the freedom of dry camping. For the money, these generators are awesome! I run mine on the right side of the bed, angled towards the left, with the tail gate opened. When it's raining, I push it further towards the cab under the tonneau. I also plug a small fan into it, to dissipate exhaust and to aid in cooling.

Agree with all you said about the Champion generator. We have one of the 3100W with pull start and the eco switch. It definitely uses gas when under load, but the electric output is clean and stable. Very happy with it so far this first season.

Ran my 3100 champion for 2-1/2 weeks following hurricane Michael to power my daughters house essentials. We cycled off for a few hours each day, but it ran it at least 18 hours each day. What a workhorse. The fuel economy was outstanding, especially when it was hard to find following storm. I know what to get them for Christmas!

That's exactly what I just bought one for. My husband has recently passed away and I couldn't pull start our huge 7500 watt generator. I just finished following the Loloho tutorial on priming and breaking in and the oil change. Now I'm ready for Hurricane season! I love this Generator. Easy to handle and use. Quieter for a neighborhood than the huge one I had too. So happy I got the remote start unit on special for less than 620.00!!

We have two Powerhorse 2000 generators and they have served us well. Used for 5th wheel camping/traveling. Use them when in rest stop to run A/C (just one of the two units) . They have been used during power outages at home. Used to run an electric chain saw and power tools. Most of the time they are used the two of them at a time. I don't have a decibel meter but I would call them reasonably quiet. And as mentioned in the video the sides of the truck muffle the sound some. It's a rare occasion they won't start on one pull even after sitting for several weeks. They are selling for $549 on Amazon which is about what we paid in 2016. Not being a brand buyer I could care less about that end of it. The Champion sounds/looks like a winner. Price is very affordable and the remote is a great feature. Thanks for your videos they are enjoyable and informative.

Thumbs up on this Generator. I purchased 16 months ago based on your earlier review. the remote start is the bomb. I have put it through the paces in both hot summer camping and winter camping. Your caution on not storing the plastic gas can (or anything for that matter) near the exhaust is valid. I won't go into details but could have had a disaster on our hands. Love your channel.

We own the 3400 dual fuel model. The 3400 dual fuel model does not come with the remote start. We just got back from a trip in which we used it for 168 hours straight with absolutely no issues. Unfortunately, the propane diaphragm that shipped with the unit was broken. This seems to be a common issue, most likely because of the way Champion packages the diaphragm. I called Champion and received a replacement but not in time for our trip so we ran the generator on gasoline. In the future we will use propane. Our only issue with the generator is the small fuel tank but with that said we averaged 12 hours on a fill. I would normally top the fuel off so I didn't have to get up in the middle of the night in the cold weather to fill it. I can't tell you at what percentage of power we used but we ran it in the economy mode. It ran our interior lights, water heater, pump, coffee pot, television, dvd/stereo, phone chargers and blower fan for the furnace. As for the volume of sound, our property is adjacent to a national forest and there is only one neighbor. They were surprised that we were running a generator since they didn't hear it.

Hello again guys! I bought this unit upon your first review awhile back. I don’t regret for one minute the thousand bucks I spent. It has worked flawlessly every single time! Runs the AC, microwave, and or the TV! The super best part is the remote control! We were the talk of the mountain boondocking in Idyllwild California in 32• weather! My son-in-law was so jealous while he was outside messing with his generator pull cord!!! He’s still trying to borrow a thousand bucks from me...nope!

Kudos again for Champion customer service! I got a Champion 3100 watt this summer (non-electric start) and it was defective out of the box. It would start, but it wouldn't idle down. After going through some troubleshooting over the phone with tech support, we determined that the controller board was bad. They knew we were due to leave in a week on a 2-week trip (we purchased it for this trip!), so they overnighted a new board and gave us a second one to keep as a backup! (~$300 value). It arrived the next day and the generator has run great ever since. It sometimes struggled to start the AC, so I had to add a hard start capacitor to the AC unit. After that, no problems.

I bought a remote start 3500 watt Champion generator from Cabela's for about $900. I put 500 hours on it over the summer and it ran great 95% of the time. The only issue seemed to be after I ran it out of gas, refilled it, and started it again right away with a heavy load...but just on occasion. I used the $20 rain cover strategically draped over the front of the generator during rain storms and had no issues. I have a 5th wheel with a 15k BTU air conditioner and there is a bit of shuffling when using different RV systems at the same time such as the water heater, microwave, etc. because I like to see just how far I can push it before overload. I think the generator holds 1.6 gallon of gas and it runs about 7 hours at idle in economy mode and about 5 hours under a heavy load. Overall, I'm really happy with the generator. I also added a magnetic dipstick from Ebay. It's amazing how much junk I wipe off of it every 100 hour oil change.
@robertpowers67276 жыл бұрын
I purchased this Champion based on your initial view. Love It! The wife can turn it on and off whenever she does her hair with the remote. Gas consumption is very good. It could use a gas gauge. Noise level is acceptable. Aiming it in the right direction is the key. Overall, I would recommend it. One other nice minor feature is a built in battery tender while in storage. We boondock most of the time. I can run it to charge batteries (AGM) about two hours a day. With an extra one gallon Jerry Can I can go for a week with conservative use. Keep the video coming. I learned a lot from you videos.
@mso44336 жыл бұрын
You might want to consider a wooden dowel for a fuel dipstick. Fill the tank to normal, put a length of dowel in the tank opening, remove the dowel and mark the full level with a notch. Half that length is 1/2 tank, and so forth. Before they had fuel gauges on cars, that was the method used, and it worked. Before my time but I heard about it. lol

We have had our champion 3500 watt generator for a few years now, and we really like it. As far as the noise I stumbled upon a trick, we now leave ours in the front compartment of our 5th wheel. I bought a Champion 7500 watt generator for home use, 18 months ago. I've had nothing but problems with the generator and its never worked even one time during that period. They sent me batteries, they sent me a carburetor, and i even brought it to a champion service center. Nobody can make this generator operate. However, Champion customer service has been very good and they decided just last week to replace the generator, so kudos to them. I do not think it should have taken that long…….but at least they are taking care of the problem.

Perhaps my perspective is skewed by years of running construction site generators, but I have been quite pleasantly amazed at how quiet my Champion is. On a quiet Mountain top with a generator sitting just outside the RV I usually can't hardly hear it over anything it might be running in the RV, such as air conditioning or the furnace running, or perhaps a TV. Again, perhaps my perspective is skewed from driving a truck over the road and parking next to Big Rigs running all night long but this generator just has a nice pur outside if everything else is quiet. I have been very pleased with mine and it's especially nice on a Cold Mountain in the middle of the night, to be able to push the button from inside and have your generator kick on.

I have the same unit. Two years now and hundreds of hours on it. Sometimes runs 24-7. Never one single issue. Starts first time everytime. Ive had a Champion generator for 13 years. Runs perfect. The secret to any Generator is when you store it long term cut the gas off at the petcock and let it the motor run till it dies. Carbs cant gum up if they don't have gas in them. :-)

Bought this model after watching your video. Runs like a Champion, pun intended. The battery was bad from the get go but Champion told me to order a new. Love the way it tucks in the back left corner of the pickup box on our 2500HD Silverado and with the 5th wheel above it and the tailgate closed and locked no one will steal it. Also can hook up or unhook with it in place. Put the hour meter on it like you installed.

We have the Champion 3500 model with the remote start. We have had ours for about 8 months now buthaven't used it much yet, only about 20 some hours on it, but so far we are 99% happy with it. We only had one hiccup with it where we ran it out of fuel, and then after refueling, it did not want to start. After running down the battery trying to get it started again and having to ultimately use the rope start, we finally got it going, and it hasn't missed a beat since. Ours will run our 13.5Kbtu A/C and the microwave at the same time (although I don't recommend it). We added the exact same el cheapo hourmeter to ours as you did on yours. The 3500 will run our RV with the A/C on in 90°-95° heat for 5.7 hours on a tankful of fuel. Agreed, a larger fuel tank would be welcome, but then again it isn't that big of a deal to just top it off every so often either. I feel that for the Value per Dollar, the Champion is TOUGH to beat.

Remote On/Off. In any generator you want to unplug the power first, let it run idle for a min then shut if off. Otherwise you could lose the electrical field and the unit wont produce power. As you stated the issue you're having. Look up the drill on reverse method to recharge your electrical field.

I also found Champion customer service to be excellent. I bought a used 3100 that wouldn't start but had been running (I got it for a great price). I figured that the carburetor needed cleaning and when I took it apart I found a clogged emulsifier tube and jet. I requested information online from Champion about ordering a bowl gasket and flange gasket. I was disappointed when they called me and indicated that those parts weren't available but a new carb would be $30. I decided to improvise and reuse the bowl gasket and make a new flange gasket. When I put it back together it started right up and ran great with the newly cleaned carb. To my astonishment, a few days later a new replacement carb arrived on my doorstep courtesy of the folks at Champion.

Great review! We have the 3500w remote start champion like that. We also have right at 100hrs on it and I have to say it is GREAT!!! When in Yellowstone this past September it was 29 on morning, hit the remote, it didn’t start the first try, but it will automatically keep trying(3?times), it started on the second attempt and ran fine! We have ran it for several hours at a time also without a fail. It lives on a tray on the back bumper of the trailer, with the cover on while traveling, get to camp, set up, remove cover and I made an aluminum heat/noise deflector that fits on the exhaust side with 2 thumb screws, that makes it a little quieter too.. Talked to Champion service once, had a question, they answered, were prompt curious and answered the question, cant ask for any more than that!! I get 6-7 hrs run time on a tank of fuel.. I absolutely love the Champion, we have many more travels together in the future!!! Oh yes, got it on sale from Cabelas for $800 delivered to my door,,fantastic value!!!

Excellent and insightful review. We have this and use it for High School Rodeo. It is essential...the remote start and stop means my wife or I don’t have to leave the coach in the AM to start things up. This is quieter than any conventional generator-anyone who’s had to bury their head in pillow to block out a neighbor’s conventional generator will appreciate the Champion for low/reasonable noise levels. As a 3000 series, you might need to turn off the A/C when running the microwave, but that’s only for a few minutes. Our Champion has been used on the ground, in the dust, and keeps going. We change oil easily and the air filters from Champion are inexpensive.... purchase 2 at a time-Champion is easy to work with on the phone. The only thing I would change are the smallish wheels..,,good for stability, but a tough pull when going over uneven ground or pebbles. That’s the real world for you....otherwise, highly recommend if you’re not going with an Onan. The remote start is great.

Good video. I ran a champion 3500 watt almost everyday for about 5 months.... as much as 10 hours a day. It was pulling a 5000 btu ac. Cost was about $1 per hour for gasoline. (I think the propane setup costs twice as much... especially if you are exchanging 20lb bottles for $20 to $25 a pop.) I finally thought I had worn it out when it started running rough the second year, but I realized the bearing at the pull cord was coming apart. I found a replacement bearing at Motion Industries for $5... and said... oh hell... give me two of them. So they are tough... very tough and I rather own 3 or 4 of them (even just for spare parts) than one Honda.

JP JP Joan and I retired this year, watched a lot of you tube videos. Ended up with a Rockwood, and our local RV dealer has a lifetime warranty on all the mechanical items, which was the cherry on top of the Sundae. Watch LoLoHo and some others. These folks are great at their reviews. Clear, informative, and humorous. Plus they are fellow Alabamians..

Sean, we love our Champion 75537i. We've got nearly 800 hours on ours, and agree that the remote start is an absolute killer feature (no Cousin Eddie here!). And our experience with Champion Customer Service, both getting a free high altitude carburetor jet and to determine the proper battery size as we stupidly killed the original battery) was second to none. Great job on the video!

I think you did a great job on the review of the generator. One thing I would suggest Run your generator on premium gas it will run better/smother. You should give it a minute to warm up when you start it and a couple minutes under no load after being run under a heavy load say 1/2+ of capacity to give it a chance to cool down. Great job. Bill

Everything you said dido❗️I have 2017 classic Airstream and 3500 champion fuel only same length of time bout 2 years. Its bit heavy and bit loud but for the remote start 👊🏾great. Recently called champion for new nylon mesh fuel filter. Couldn’t believe they sent replacement for free👊🏾

I like the size of it. I had an RV ready champion generator - not this same model, which I liked. It got stolen! Now I have a Troy Built, but it's twice as big & twice as heavy. Lowes gave me an unbelievable price because they heard my Champion was stolen. I miss that Champion though!

Great review!! We've had our 3100 Champ without electric start for a year now and it has performed flawlessly! Your review was spot on with our experience (with the exception electric start feature). We have 50 hrs on ours and use it like you guys, sporadicly when necessary. We have a 25ft Coleman TT equipped much like your Airstream. Keep up the great work, love the channel!!!

I think the only negative aspect of the Champion generator is the gas tank size. When you're in cold weather no big deal; use the generator periodically to keep your batteries charged. But if your dry camping in the heat of summer, running the AC for just one hour won't cut it. I know it's more expensive, but my Honda 3000 will run my AC all night long on a single tank. I guess it really depends on what you expect out of your generator. Great review as always!

We have the 3400 watt with remote start, have almost 200 hours on it. I've changed the oil about every 75 hours. We even have the same hour meter that you have, saw it on on earlier video and installed it. We have a 15k AC unit on our Grand Design 2600RB and the gen set starts and runs it with no problem. Only thing I'd like to see is an extended fuel supply option or modification. Camping in the hot Florida nights when the AC needs to run all night is a bit challenging. I top off the generator and go to bed late, around 11pm and then have to get up early and refuel it. One tank of fuel lasted about 6-7 hours.

We bought this generator this spring based on your review and we love it. We do a lot of boondocking and have ran it all night to keep out camper cooled down as well as run out furnace in the colder weather. We agree the remote start makes it well worth it. We have the 3100 and it is excellent...however, the remote model was not available in Canada 🇨🇦 in 2018. Maybe now. Either way, we find it an excellent value and worked well up in the Yukon/NWT this past year. Agree about the gas gauge.

Purchased the digital hybrid with remote start. 2.9 gal tank the remote start feature and a bank of batteries is as close to being on an electric grid as you can get. I just have to get up once in a while when the tank is empty and the batteries are drained and I’m forced to fill it up. It’s nowhere near a problem as filling the little tank every time I start it, run it then get up to stop it. 😁

One small difference with what you said about the circular plug you showed....it is a twist-lock plug, designed to go in and twist to lock. If the plug and outlet are in good condition the plug cannot come out, even with vibration. I used these plugs on cords and tools....some of them are more than forty years old and still function fine. The good brands are truly superior if well treated.

For what they cost I think they are the best out there, we have owned 2 of them and did not have a single problem with either one. We always ran them outside the pickup because I found it easier to position the generator than trying to position our rig, especially in dry camp grounds. The first one we had did double duty not only did it run our camper but it ran my power tools when I worked construction. I think as long as you keep up on the maintenance of the engine and the electrical system they will last for a long time. 4

To avoid ethanol base fuel always uses the premium fuel. Since generators are not used regularly, always add a fuel stabilizer when you purchase your fuel.
@carilynjurgeson61783 жыл бұрын
I think with the remote electric start/stop, you will run it for the exact time you need. If you have to go outside it might be on for a longer time. Noise for less time and less fuel. Great consideration while figuring out which model to get.

11-13-2019 purchased a used 1 year old 3100W Champion Generator with remote start (former owner had only 6 hours on usage, sold his TT) for $600. Now being used on my 5th wheel and the convenience of the remote start far out weighs (figure of speech) my former Honda generator EU3000i 2018 and as for the noise level they are about the same. The Honda had: no wheels and tow handle, heavier than Champion and cost much higher. Just my opine.

I think this is a good generator and happy so far. HOWEVER, my OEM battery was not holding a charge after about 16 months of use. I investigated and found that the battery casing was cracked and acid dust was covering internal parts with heavy corrosion. I cleaned it up and installed a new battery. BUT, if it went undetected for a few more months the corrosion would have been at a point of no return. CHECK YOUR BATTERY!!

We have the Champion 3400. It's a little more power but we sacrifice the remote start which, on reflection, maybe wasn't a good idea. I'm a little worried now about using it inside the truck bed. We have a cap rather than a tonneau, and I keep the generator right up front behind the cab. The exhaust vents facing a trailer spare tire and now you've got me wondering if that isn't a really, really bad idea, so I'm looking forward to the video on gensets in the truck bed. Naive question, is there such a thing as an attachable exhaust pipe for these things? As always - loved the video, thanks!

We use a non remote start version and it has been fantastic. I accept that it's probably not "as good" as Honda, Yamaha etc. But at less than half the cost if it's only 2/3 as good then we're massively ahead as far as I'm concerned.

We have a Champion 3400w Inverter generator without the remote but still like it very much. It seems to be a bit more quiet at 58dBA than the 3100w that you reviewed. It has two modes; Economy (very stealthy) and Full and although the run time is listed as 8 hrs ours ran for a bit over 10 hrs in the Eco mode. Your correct that the fuel capacity is a bummer as I have had to refuel it in the dark on occasion. While it is not light it is compact and easily moved once on the ground with the rear wheels. I would recommend Champion to my friends as I feel it is a great value for the service that it performs.

Thank you for the review. Will certainly consider it. We bought our first RV so inevitably we will need a generator. Good to know there are good alternatives to the expensive brands. Just wish it came with a meter to measure running hours.
@JWY6 жыл бұрын
A pair of EU2000 Honda generators will be much more quiet. If you are running the microwave then 1 EU2000 will be enough - again even more quiet. Unless you are running the AC a 2K generator is more then enough; probably a 1K generator could grinds coffee and run a lot of little individual jobs - and a EU1000 is nearly silent. But yes, you need to go out there and yank on the starter cord a few times and fiddle with the choke and such. A small price to pay to be friendlier to the neighbors, I think. I have a Champion generator - it's wonderful - but it's used for work, and it's really loud.
@mic9826 жыл бұрын
Personally, I would gladly sacrifice a little more sound for the remote start/stop. The real determinate factor for us would be reliability. That, and service. We certainly will consider a Champion generator, Sean. I think you gave us a very fair and thorough review, once again. Thanks!

We have the same generator. I used it in our trip to Canada when boondocking, I use it at elk camp for hours on end to run the heater and tv. The remote is fantastic. It works at fairly long distances. I bet we have 150 hours on ours. We change the oil every 40-50 hrs. It will work our AC and tv but that's about it when the AC is on.

Being a service dealer for Champion, we have found the product to be good quality. The company does respond well to dealer request as well as customers. Of the non-name brands, they do seem to good quality. Not overly complicated build. Suggest keep track of the hours and you should be able to know how long the gen runs on a tank.

I had one of the Champion construction generators with the remote start. It was great for that type of generator, and the remote start was awesome for using it as a backup generator for the house. With the right setup. you can start it without even going out in a storm, and then just switch your internal power to the generator. My one complaint was the battery. I'm not sure it even lasted 2 years in spite of running the generator for at least 15 minutes every couple months. It was just a cheap battery that didn't last.

We liked the features of the Champion but we found that the weight was the deal breaker for us. Lifting it in and out of the truck bed was a problem for me ( bad shoulders and high truck bed). We looked at many but in the end we went with 2 Honda’s. More expense but I find we are boondocking more now because the smaller generators are easier to handle. We have more hours in one season on our 2 Honda’s already than we had on our 3400W unit in 5 years.

We’ve been using our Champion 3400 w/remote start for almost 2 years now and haven’t had any problems. When we were boondocking near Flagstaff last year the temperature dropped into the upper 20’s a couple of nights and it took 3 or 4 tries for it to start in the mornings but if it doesn’t start the first time there will be a pause of about 5 seconds and it automatically tries again for up to 5 times. It never took more than 4 attempts to fire up.
