It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on KZbin are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

My Dad was a engineer/surveyor during 1941 42 on the Alaskan Highway I have photos of him and his crew during that time. He also told me that when large pieces of equipment got stuck they sometimes would just bury it because there was a rush to finish the road for fear of Japanese invasion.

Hi again, thanks for posting this. My grandfather retired in 1969 and drove his camper to Alaska. It’s been on my bucket list ever since. Now I retired 2 years ago so maybe my time has come? After our Utah trip this year I’ll have to start working on the Alaska trip plan! Thanks you guys😂

I have to agree with +Scofco You didn't miss anything. A CB or similar is definitely the way to go and the Milepost is an incredible resource. I think the Provincial campgrounds can catch campers off guard because they are so far from the road, but oh so quiet.

I've lived in AK since '53, have driven the "Highway" 23 times and we're planning two more trips this year. Just do your maintenance ahead of time, take your time, buy a copy of The Milepost, and don't be surprised if you get windshield damage. It happens. We figure 5-6 days from Palmer to Portland but we don't do a lot of sight seeing along the way. Gotta get down those grandkids!

We drove up in "94 and back in '97 in our Dodge car towing a boat. From NY and returned to Virginia. Roads were a bit rougher then. I did fashion a front grill guard from a closet metal shelving unit covered with metal screening... it took many large rocks and saved the car. We broke a trailer spring 70 miles north out of Whitehorse. Incredibly, a family towing a helicopter (yes, a helicopter) with their Subaru car had extra springs... the exact same springs my trailer used. It was a great family trip!

Enjoyed your video. I did the trip in reverse October '16 to April '17 starting out from home (Ross River, Yukon), crossing into the US in Minnesota, heading to the southwest and then north again, and then crossing back into Canada at Abbotsford, BC. After that was the slog (because I had weather and time constraints) into Alberta and then north to the Alaska Highway - sometimes referred to as the Alcan - and returning home via Whitehorse. My 4 (then 5 as of Nevada) dogs had a lovely time. Loved the US gas prices, too. The roads are much better overall compared to when I moved to the Yukon in 2002, but "road repair" is a regular season here. The oily film on the road that you referred to is, (you were right), oily - a mixture spread or sprayed on the unpaved roads to help keep the dust down. (The dust otherwise is worse than a heavy fog.) Some elbow grease usually required to get it all off. The inevitable dust on at least some roads are a challenge for vehicle air filters so these should be checked regularly and cleaned or possibly replaced. In addition to TWO spare real tires (not "donuts") I would recommend spare oil, air, and fuel filters be carried. In Whitehorse, (therefore the whole of Yukon), there are NO Mercedes or Mazda dealerships - so if driving vehicles by either of these companies, probably wise to bring spare belts as well. There is a NAPA store, and also a Canadian Tire, (a Canadian institution) - good resources for most spare parts, batteries, tires, service , etc. Our Walmart is on the small side but provides some auto services as well. There are one or two auto glass shops as well. Note that it is NOT illegal to drive in Yukon with a cracked windshield. Good selection of grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, (on hwy and in town) and at least a couple of laundromats. ATMs at all the banks that are situated at Main Street and Second Ave, Main and Third, and Main and Fourth. Overnight RV parking allowed at the Walmart in designated area - which often is overflowing in tourist season - not aware of any rig being asked to leave under those circumstances. FYI I drive a 1991 Leisure Works "Oakland" - a four-season 28 ft. class C that I bought in Alberta in April '16. Nicknamed it, "Fenderprise", ... "to boldly go where no woman and her four dogs had gone before". Keep up the good work!

I made my first trip on the Alcan in April 1980 in a motor home. The majority of the roads were gravel and were very rough. I drove it again down to Portland and back to Wasilla in 2012. The roads are so much better now, but still some rough areas. Just take your time and you should not have any problems.

Loved your video! After getting to drive the Alcan three times! I lived up there for 16 years in Palmer and Wasilla and a bit in Anchorage. My husband whom I met up there, had lived up there 21 years… One son went up with me and my ex-husband and then I had another son born up there in Palmer! So this is a great Way to step back in time war for nostalgia reasons! I’ll never go back up there… Too old! Loved it living there! Not sure about going now?! Thank you very much! ❤️🤗👍👌👋😀🤪

We've traveled the Al-Can twice, once moving to AK and then moving from AK. My grandfather was an engineer that helped build the highway during WWII so it was incredible to travel along such a remarkable highway. It was sort of like he was guiding us along. Kluane Lake area is probably one of my favorite places to go through. The scenery! Watson Lake and all the buffalo are incredible too. Being so remote and so close to nature is humbling. Not sure I'm ready for that long of a drive again anytime soon but doing it once much less twice in a lifetime was quite a remarkable experience. And yes, be prepared for every and anything 🙂

Whitehorse IS a great place to spend a few days! Two things you didn't mention in the video are the Frantic Follies, a live show definitely worth seeing, and the world's largest wind indicator, a free-turning DC-3 aircraft mounted on a pivot outside the Whitehorse Airport.

thumbs up for the great video. i was gone for 8 months and had 3 blowouts on my fifth wheel with towmaster tires. someone told me to look into Goodyear Unisteel G614 RST Radial tires i think they are 14 ply. they are expensive but well worth it. no problem for the past 1.5 years. i would never recomend doing a huge trip like this with the stock tires.

This spring drove it in just over 4 days. Would not recommend that. Enjoy the scenery and the meditation time. From Fort Nelson on up thru Upper BC and yukon is my favorite area.

For those planning on a trip up to Alaska, take note as you look out your window along the Alcan Hwy. you will see the old original road off in the distance. They have straightened the road termindously. The road is not as bad as most say but you need to be prepared. Loloho are correct advising spare gas and the Milepost is the hwy. Bible. CB radios are also a great backup for emergency purposes. A lot of cell dead time. Channel 19 is a very popular station for truckers. Help is always out there on the CB Waves. Former Alaskan, Jo

When I went up the Alcan highway in 1976 only a few hundred miles where paved. I remember the first few miles where so muddy from rain we had to push and tow vehicles up a hill. Cars where getting stuck. That oil road you ran into was the Alaska Highway back then. Every windshield was broken on all the vehicles. Guess they changed the laws back in 1976 it was required to have a high powered rifle in your vehicle when you traveled the Alcan highway. Yes it was required for a person to be armed. Not PC back then better days. I remember a sign where it said you would cross the BC Yukon border 7 times before going into the Yukon. Yes bear tracks all over the place. Guess the road is not as bad as it once was. My father drove up there in the winter a couple of times.
