Once had a Studio GEM with P90's, sounded nice. Now I have another "gem". Semi-solid (chambered) without f-holes, instead a solid maple top, only 3.3 kg weight and an incredibly natural, almost acoustic tone, but completely different to an ES-335, nevertheless the guitar offers hardly less sustain than a solid body Les Paul. The only thing, I disliked, had been the pickups, for me a Les Paul needs P90's or PAF's and no high gain bridge pickup. So I replaced the pickups, changed neck tone to an extremely good working neck bass-cut, (which really only affects bass and not mids too) and bridge tone to master tone, so I not only get a lot of better sounding neck pickup tones, but maybe even more wonderfully different combined pickup tones too, perfectly well adjustable between warmer and brighter, which make - at least for me - a Strat obsolete and then there still are both volume controls there for fine-tuning....

I really enjoyed this video. I'd also like to offer a constructive criticism: I feel like you did each of these guitars a disservice by only demonstrating tone at full volume/tone settings. Most of these pickups really come into their own with the vintage tones when rolled off a little.

The Faded T was discontinued in 2017 and we only featured current models in this video. The Faded T was most like the current Tribute model. The Faded T was the most affordable in the 2017 lineup (with a carved maple top) just like the Tribute is now, and also has the unique maple neck like the Tribute, and no push/pulls like the Studio.

Please correct your facts: maple is heavier than mahogany. Density is not the same as weight. Les Pauls are heavy do to the maple cap. An SG is a light guitar since it is made of just mahogany.

Hi. I'm Paolo from. Italy. I think your videos are great! Both simply and exaustive, easy to understand also for one who is trying to study english (io parlo italiano/je parle francais). I love the new gibson les paul supreme 2024, but rumors said to me that it's only a modern, with some gold placks and a custom price. What should you get to say about that? What making a video to explain their differences?

In general, the 50s profile necks are the fatter ones and the 60s profile necks are the thinner ones, so if you want a fat neck, you'd be looking at a 50s reissue. You would tell them you're interested in an R7, R8, R9 ("R" = reissue, 7, 8, 9 represent the year 1957, 1958, 1959).

Hi there, new subscriber here, I own several guitars, a Martin D28 modern deluxe, a Fender Stratocaster Ultra Luxe, 3 travel guitars, and the list goes on, lastly I have an older Epiphone Les Paul in very good shape, but it's pretty darn heavy and similar to a Gibson of course. Anyway, I've started saving for a Gibson guitar, they're pretty expensive so I'm looking at purchasing it in the summer of 2024, I want to get a nice Gibson but hopefully not too heavy. I appreciate your video and I hope it will help me make the decision. I watch the Trogly Guitar Show on KZbin with Austin and he definitely prefers Gibson guitars. Thanks again, take care.

My commendations on a very well structured and presented video. Tone is of course subjective, so different folks like different sounds, so this video is informative, specifically the clean tone presentations. I am reminded why my 71 Deluxe got converted to PAFs. You folks saved me money. Sadly the price of Gibsons has been jacked so high as to be unobtainium while quality has fallen through the floor. The China made Epiphones are better built and in some cases have better components (ie pots) and you don’t pay through the nose for a tiny inlay. I own many CS Les Pauls and recently compared Specials from both and the Epi was a much better playing guitar. Still a Les Paul. Have not found a decent Gibson USA on the rack in years. My own experience, your mileage may vary. A substantial shout out to the presenter for an excellent and believable job and for never once using the words “iconic” or “authentic” in his conversation.

My 96 studio has a 50s profile neck but my 2018 smokehouse studio has a thinner profile almost like the 71 standard. I swapped out the push-pull pots for traditional pots and a set of Seymour Duncan, Saturday Night Specials in my 2018 studio. It is a fantastic tone.

This video really explains it. Definitely true about the standard 60s having the thin neck.. it’s very thin compared to the 50s which I found to be almost too bulbous. A very underrated model is the Les Paul Traditional - it’s very close to actual 50s spec and feels like the necks on the custom shop reissues. If you can find a used one from between 2008-2012, snag it!

Very informative and well-presented. P.S. I'm so glad I bought my LPs before the prices went absolutely insane.

This is a reference video. Truly the best description of all Les Paul models and their differences I've seen. Well done indeed Justin! Thank you.

this is seriously over complicating things. when faced with the question "which les paul should i buy?" the answer is ALWAYS "the red one". all kidding aside, i bought my LP at the bloor store, it's a great place to shop for gear. i loved going there when i lived in toronto. customer service was top shelf, every time i went in. i got some really good deals there, too. L&M on bloor is the thing i miss most about toronto.

The Les Paul Jr was the preferred axe of my longtime favorite guitar player, Leslie West of Mountain. Just a real stripped down workhorse of a guitar. Love the p90 sound. Leslie, RIP brother. Thank you for your contribution to the music scene. In my eyes you were a giant of a guitar player.

I own a 50's standard goldtop and it plays as well as the custom shop LP's i have played. It seems like Les Paul guitars are about finding the right one. How its set up matters a lot too!

Yep, the Standards are plenty good for me. The setup makes a big difference, I agree.

Thank you for your expertise. I learned a lot more about Les Paul guitars. I have a 1972 54' Copy Custom Les Paul. It is 51 years old this year. It sounds beautiful with its P90's. I love playing it more than my 1986 Stratocaster made in Japan, of course. I had a relative, David Wiegand (Deceased), who had much to do with inventing the pickups on guitars as well as magnetic tape recorders. He was an electrical engineer. As a Born-again Christian, I like Phil Keaggy's guitar playing, especially when he lets loose on his, I believe, 60's Les Paul. If you have seen him play, check out on KZbin his 1980 year of playing his song, "Time."

I very much appreciate the effort in showing the differences between each model. However, why, why, why would you use an amp simulator pedal? That thing sounds awful! It made each Les Paul sound...ummm...not so great! You have amps sitting behind you, why use a a horrible sounding pedal? Rant over...Thx.

1st time here. I'm a novice guitarist @ best and had those questions in my mind before buying a guitar. In particular what were all the difference s between the Gibson s. I wish I had seen this video prior to my purchase. Nevertheless I was hooked by the beautiful AA flame top of the Gibson LP Studio Plus. Absolutely love your description of the LPs. The Studio Plus has been even better than advertised. I had the notion to add to my collection a variety of guitars. But after I bought the LP Studio Plus. Now all I want is more LPs. Keep up the good work. The Modern may be next.
