Definitely. The pine body sounds most punchy to my ears with the rosewood sounding more mellow and warm and the other one is in between. I am obsessed with owning the Lake Placid blue with rosewood neck since I discovered it online, but I'll have to keep saving and hope one is still around by the time I can afford it. Been on a 2001 Mexican HSS 'Fat Strat' for most of my playing life, but am mainly an acoustic player so that's been totally sufficient for my needs.

@@jackmchammocklashing224 That's very strange, there should be an obvious tone difference between different pickup positions. We'd suspect there's something amiss with the wiring. Test the pickups/selector. Get a screwdriver or something metallic, plug the guitar into an amp, and tap the pole pieces with the screwdriver on each pickup as you flip the pickup selector. Make sure that each position on the switch correctly corresponds to the right pickup(s).

When I was 5 years old my took me and his telecaster bass to the Fender plant, it was 1963. He wanted them to set his bass up which was not something they did. When they saw his bass they asked "Where did you get this?". He told them Wallachs Music City. They told him to hang on a minute then returned with an older man in glasses and coveralls. They said to the man look at this neck Leo who said wow that's a show neck how did that get out of here? Anyway several years later I began to play guitar and it dawned on me who I had met that day. It's now a cherished memory of a very nice man who told my dad he was very lucky to his bass with that neck. He also gave me a lifesaver candy. RIP Mr. Fender.

Except that its chalk full of inaccuracies. For example; their commenting on the uniqueness of the treble bleed circuit in the American Professional guitar and how 'very very cool' it is and makes it an 'ultimate players guitar'. Except that exact circuit is in the Player Plus Mexican model he looked at near the beginning and entirely failed to mention. Host seems nice though, hyperbole aside. I will give you this; it's more accurate than any experience I've ever had talking to people inside of a real L&M store. The bar is pretty low on that one, though.

Nice that you pointed out the advantage of locking tuners which is for quick and easier string changes. Most reviewers rave about these being a must to improve tuning stability which is not what they do.

This is such a pet peeve of mine. If you know how to string a guitar, then the only benefit of locking tuners is speedier string change. No tuning stability benefit at all, absolutely zero. Tuning instability number one culprit is the nut. Second place is user error, like not knowing how to string a guitar or not stretching the strings properly. Number seven on a vibrato equipped guitar is vintage bridge where the six pivot screws hasn't been been adjusted properly preventing the bridge from returning to pitch smoothly.

Couple hundred for mods and you're good to go. Only reason to get a USA model is if you want to avoid the used market and want real rosewood, but tripling the price isn't really worth it imo

This is a really useful and comprehensive overview of current Stratocaster options. 👍 I can certainly vouch for Fender's made-in-Japan models - I just got a Hybrid II with a reversed Tele headstock in a clearance sale, and it's fantastic quality. The headstock probably won't appeal to Strat purists - and I have to admit it almost put me off buying it - but I got used to it straight away, and the only "problem" with the guitar is that it's so hard to put it down, it's that good! 😊

I'm at my 4th strat. I bought my 1st without knowing anything. I bought my second because of the neck, I wanted a 7.25 neck, I took vintera 1st generation, I hate the Pau Ferro neck. Neck shape is important, radius and profile. I like soft V but impossible to find a stock Soft-V with rosewood. I bought cheap used Squier I keep in my car just to jam with friends in case, I'm now buying a Japanese model. My advice would be go to a store and try as many as you can to buy the right one. And it's not easy cause you only notice the good or bad points with practice. Pickups can be changed easily. I think about having a custom neck be made to my specs...

@@Blanc57 thanks for your help. Yeah, I need to try some for sure, but I'm eyeing the Player series and will not be changing the pickups. I know that these Strats have a different radius than my 2 Jackson's and my Pacifica 112. I'm surprised what you said about the Pau Ferro types, I was eyeing them earlier. Liked the one with the green headstock. This one though for me 41:10 is do die for (visually). Although, I will aim for the price range of the player series. I'm not comfortable paying more than that because this will be one of my main work horse guitars, and I might be drinking while operating it as well. I'll check those smaller neck radius to see what you're up to. Cheers!

The Performer is the best Strat for 90% of us. Its American-made, holds its resale value and sounds great.
@longandmcquade6 күн бұрын
We believe that the Player II Strat (which wasn't available at the time this video was made) is the best Strat for 90% of people. When the Player II came out, that's how Justin began our Tele vs Tele video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6PceYaXqbCVrZY ). For people who don't have any particular specifications in mind that are must-haves, the Player I/II line will have the most general feature set that appeals to most players and therefore will be what 90% of people go for. It's the last 10% of guitarists who are particular about country of manufacture, woods, electronics, neck profiles, etc. who start going up the line from the Player series. What you're saying about the Performer could very well be true, but the feedback we hear is that the aesthetics of the current Performer is what holds it back. It's a pretty particular customer who prefers the large 70s-style headstock and the untinted maple neck. Lots of people would be more than happy with the Vintera line, get the classic aesthetics they want, saving $500 and still get a great sounding and playing guitar. Mexican-made guitars hold their resale value too (just not as well as MIA). Take a look at the used market for MIM Strats. MIM Strats that we originally sold for $499CAD are now being sold used for $700-$800CAD. A mid 2000s - mid 2010s Mexican made Strat was a very safe investment, because if anything, it has increased in value, not just held. But if you'll notice, the Performer is one of the last lines to get the "II" designation with a refresh. We have Player II, Vintera II, American Professional II, American Vintage II... the Ultra IIs were just released recently. The Performer is due for a refresh and upgrade. And if/when that happens, it can be a total gamechanger for the state and fate of the Performer line.

American Pro (pine body) 43.10

What a great Strat it remains to this day I moved the VN pickups and entire to a great 90s MIJ 50s RI Foto Flame (anyone remember those?) and put Fralin "Woodstock '69" pickups and new electronics into it. It took me another 10 years to find/purchase my ideal Strats - a mid-80s Contemporary Strat with System 2 Trem and an HM Strat. Despite it's name/image, the HM Strat really is the 'Swiss Army Knife' of guitars. It can cover multiple music styles and genres with ease and does everything I need brilliantly - all that plus 24 frets! 🤘

First rate consideration and demonstration of such a wide range of Strats. One missing consideration, which may be too subjective and personal to have added. On the American Pro 2, I take a Maple cap, over a Rosewood, to suit my taste. There's a slightly rounded effect to the Rosewood cap, vs. Maple to my ear. I'm in my 70's and have seen and heard lots of the range over the decades. I always choose Maple. It may not be a big enough difference to most ears, but it's there to these ones and I read others hear it as well. Justin is a nice and articulate person working the Bloor west store. Good mind, wide understanding of the "special" aspect of so many guitars. Great explanation/demonstration concise as well as focused.

That JV red Aerodyne is very cool but the text says rosewood. Looks like maple to me but maybe they figured a way to lighten up rosewood. The lighter fretboard adds a color but for me I’d prefer a darker look to keep with the space ship look. To choose between the Stratocaster's, on Fender site was questionnaire to help, and suggest which one guitar is the best for you. It was about time of corona lock down, I fulfilled that very carefully in all details, with exactly my personal preferences to choose some of vintage Strat with one piece maple neck appropriate to me - from whole Fender production. To believe or not, the result I got was exactly - Squier by Fender Classic Vibe Stratocaster Maple Neck 2TS (two tobacco sunburst), which continuously get good reviews from all sides I noticed. I ordered that guitar from a local dealer shop because there was not in stock. But when appeared, unfortunately because of corona restrictions the seller was so feared and nervous I could not even to try much the guitar (he gave me 5 minutes), then I gave up although started to like it. The neck was gorgeous, slim, gloss finished without stupid satin "fast" back (usual not only for Squier). Just a few days ago I ordered it again, but the difference between newer and older version will be about something cheaper Pine instead standard Alder body - bad, but I will see when the guitar will appear. Difference between that Classic Vibe Strat, and vintage USA genuine's is about polyurethane instead nitro finish, also the pickups including practically the same all Player (Mexican) series - I will change for sure, then will make fine guitar setup including fret's leveling, and hope for the best. After all of that, it seems only another way for me is to order from much more expensive Custom Shop department ...

My only gripe is on the American Vintage line. When it comes to the slab Rosewood, Fender didn't accurately round the top of the board off like they did in the 50s-60s. It's cut straight across. I think it was intentional because every Custom Shop Strat with a slab board has this unique feature, identical to the originals. Another incorrect detail is the tint in the finish. When the originals were made, they were sprayed with a clear lacquer and aged into a yellowish tint over the decades.. Fender sprays these reissues, almost an orange color, and looks tacky. So, these are small gripes..but when you're paying those kinda prices and Fender claims accuracy..that's what I expect..but in reality you have to either get a vintage Fender from that era, or pay twice as much (or as much, if used) as an American Vintage for a Custom Shop reissue.

Amazing video and comparison. This will help a lot of people. I agree on the Japanese 57 style maple V necks. My #2 has it and that V is special feeling. My #1 has John Mayer strat neck. I disagree on the single coil hum being an important part of "the Fender sound." The hum was just an unfortunate byproduct that no one covets. You're missing out on the #4 pickup position. Seen you skip past that a lot here and just do neck and then mid. #4 can be argued, is "the Fender sound". For me it's the best pickup position on a strat. PS: I feel like if you take off the eye glasses, your nose will come with it! 🤓

Just to let you know, don’t yell at me, that this is only the second video of yours I’ve seen, yet both videos have had issues with guitar tuning. It may not hurt your ears right now, but if you take the time to be more picky about tuning, eventually your ear will train itself to hate the sound of an out-of-tune guitar, and then you will understand why it is compulsory to tune that guitar before you record, always.

This is a great video comparing all these different forms of Fender strats. I also like how the player keeps it 'basic.' We don't need fancy riffs, but just a demo of the clean sounds with chords and lead. But I'd say for 80% of these, the differences are really about marketing more than the instrument itself. Fender has to sell the same guitars year after year, but attempt to convince consumers "this one is different"! I have a Robert Cray Mexican Strat which is a very nice guitar. But for those who are interested, I'd suggest checking out the Godin and Sire 'strat' versions for some real value. It boils down to a decent price and what feels comfortable when you play.

There are differences for sure, they’re small, but personally, I don’t mind. Fender was recently found guilty by the EU for unfair pricing of the products. I agree with the EU judges’ conclusion. The products have developed over the years, but they certainly do not justify prices being raised by 800% since the 80’s. That being said, I still prefer the Strat. I own two LP’s, a Tele and a bunch of other different guitars, but the Strat is still my number one choice and the guitar I depend the most on.

I really dig my Fender CS 56 Strat it’s a not too heavy relic but the worn neck is perfect.

What a great idea for a video! But as a lefty, the nuances in neck shapes and sizes are never realized when, due to the selection of lefty guitars (all makes), is so terribly limited. And playing a $3000 model upside down - y'know, just to get a feel - isn't a solution. (Worse when looking for Les Pauls.) So what irony that your premium guitar was lefty. Too funny. Anyway, good job L&M, great job Justin.

Yeah I like vintage specs too. But I don’t miss the truss rod adjustment in the neck pocket.

Just the best round up of the fender Stratocaster I have come across bar none. Well done. Even though I own a couple of strats I still found 5his interesting and useful.

Amazing, thanks Kerry! Hopefully it sparked you to pick up one of your Strats and play a bit after watching!

You missed the push pot on the Professional II which brings the bridge pickup in with position 5 (neck) and 4 for very useful tones. Addresses a question everyone always asked about the Strat plus that other question as there is a tone for the bridge pickup and a combined tone for the middle and neck. I have the roasted pine body with rosewood fingerboard.

My favorite guitar of all time for a reason. I've owned more strats than anything. Simply the most perfect guitar of all time in tone and ergonomics. Nothing punches through a mix so well on all pickup switching positions. A strat can really fill a room with tone, and they are incredibly versatile and responsive.

When I bought mine in 89 from my first paycheck it was easy. You had the Stratocaster (Made in USA,) and a second model. called Stratocaster de luxe and had Lace pick-ups. As far as I know the Fenders not made in the USA were called squire. I still have it.

I used to hang out at the Bloor Long and McQuade in the early 90's all the time. This brought me back and up to date on what Fender has to offer these days. Thanks so much and keep up with content like this. Liked and Subscribed half way through this 🤘🎸🎶 PS rosewood neck definitely sounded different with a unique warmth added. Other two were pretty similar to eachother.

too many strats man! If you got the money, buy the one that screams hello to you, if you on a budget, just get whatever your budget allows. I got a Fender Player Stratocaster MX22 and for me a fender is a fender. I know there are material differences, but you can if youre not happy swap the neck, the tuners nuts, all of the pick ups to what you want, and then it's sort of up to what you put into your guitar that matters not where it was made. buy a fender player strat, if you want lockings tuners, buy and swap, want a rosewood neck? swap it. you want seymore duncans? do it... i mean you can do so much so all in all you have no need to buy "this" fender, buy YOUR fender. My Fender jazz bass, i MIGHT change pickups on it to SD, i will oil the fretboard, or coat in in epoxy. The strat i just bought will prolly get SD Singles and maybe lockings nuts, not sure if ill bother. anyways, one can customize like you said your guitar pretty much, and when you buy a fender, you buy an "default" gitar that gets your name on it as you personalize it with the hardware you want, and the changes are not that, never swapped pickups before but if you just put the new pickups cords where the old ones were and you do a solid job on it then its all good in the hood. :)

Cool rundown but just so you know, I have a Vintera II 70s strat and it has the big headstock! I also have the relic'd Vintera Roadworn 60s strat and I adore these two guitars! My favorite strats, bar none!
@longandmcquade11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the correction, the Vintera II 70s certainly does sport the big headstock.
@TheElrondo10 ай бұрын
Very nice comparison. The only thing i don't agree is the use of locking tuners. They help the tuning stability a lot. You don't have the rolled up string on your tuners wich also stretches using the wiggle stick. This rolled up part doesn't go back to the same location after releasing the tremolo (Vibrato). I have 6 guitars with a bigsby and it's night and day on the tuning stability. And yes i have also lockers on my single coil guitars.
