[Longplay, No Commentary] MechWarrior 2: Ghost Bear's Legacy (DOS, 1995) Full Play-through

Ghost Bear's Legacy is the expansion pack for MechWarrior 2, also released in 1995 for DOS and Windows. I'm playing the DOS version as usual. It is set after the Refusal War from the base game, where the politics between Clans are a jumbled mess.
The expansion added new mechs and weapons that you most probably won't bother to use. What I like about this is the removal of the rather pointless and mundane secondary / tertiary objectives found in the base game. However, some missions were just horribly designed *looks at the underwater and final space mission*. These ridiculous missions may induce a rage fit if you have no idea what to expect at the beginning. Overall, I still think it is a decent addon telling the story of Ghost Bear.
For whatever reason, I just can't get my joystick to work properly as it just twitched like crazy. Had to return to keyboard controls, for better or worse. No more twitching, less authentic mech piloting experience, more cheesy play style!

I loved the atmosphere that Mechwarrior 2 and its addons had. I especially love the "team room" that you see before the first real mission after passing the trial. A room full of posters, equipment for planning, with various small arms scattered about. Now that's a man cave.

Fun fact: Ghost Bear suffered the least amount of losses during Tukayyid because their Khan wanted to prepare for the aftermath of what was to come. When she took both cities she only held one of them permanently, comstar took the other back. She knew she had enough forces to retake the first city but also knew the crushing amount of losses she would take. She asked for a draw and Comstar agreed, allowing her to pull her forces from tukayyid without shame.

I remember the Wolcott Forest, I used the ArrowIV for fun to blast that Atlas from a long distance, but ultimately it was too much weight and what not so I ditched it. Nostalgia right here.

If you had played the Windows version which came with textures, then you're probably right. The graphics in DOS version is bare bones.

I can tell you that MW2 is better artistically than 3 and 4 (simulation feelling, music and immersion) I don't like win version neighter mercs because the textures and graphics do not fit or improve. MW3 and MW4 just have new engine and gameplay, but MW2 is a master piece.

@@Predaaator MW3 had the problem of looking too much like Earth. No feeling of being in an alien planet. And the Bushwacker moved as a sluggish Atlas with the armor of a light mech. Also the way in which you have to lead targets added to the gameplay. And missions were better designed in MW2. MW2 had a masterpiece soundtrack. MW3 and MW4 could not match that. Accelerated 3D MW2 was an abomination. There was no atmospheric haze, so it looked fake.

Critue Time: The build works (LRMs to destroy units by ammo explosion generally) but i notice that some targets you focus fire until they explode (example, 38:10). That was possible a waste. Once you dearm the Victor (or other units where its long range weapons are in its arms), its no longer a real threat with its SRMs as long as you keep circling to keep the distance/range (and tapping the JJ to side stepping, abusing the MW2 JJ mechanics happily) and LRM hammer the next target in the meantime. That's generally what i recall doing when i played these games to death in the late 90s (But I preferred PPCs with LRMs because of the blast damage mechanic... I had always thought there was something off with lasers and some-times phantom missing (proven correct when i read reviews in the previous decade)

Great game. Question. At the beginning, they send one unit to check the radar signature. Guy detects Kodiak, reinforcements are enroute...why not just send a Star out if you can spare the mechs? Silly clanners haha

Those LRMs are way too powerful. I mean, it makes perfect sense, but the games need better AI and AMS. A pity that the source code isn't available for remakes and mods.

@@Chanwsan I always played the original MW2 with the all-laser variant of the Nova. Firing all weapons simultaneously could take Jenners and Fireflies in a single shot to the cockpit. Definitely some balancing issues there too ;) But larger opponents required maneuvering with the jump jets so there was some challenge to it.

It really wasn't, for a couple of missions at least. I was just not showing the fails and restarts (and sufferings) in my video. That one undersea mission and final mission were especially brutal.

Finally beaten the game though I do admit I did cheated twice through out my play through 1 was in the underwater when I got stuck in the enemy base and had to install jump jets and the second was on the last mission where I finally gotten out of the breach but unfortunately due to terrible controls in zero g ended back in just as the ship exploded so I use the invincibility cheat but that time I was justified… I gonna take a break and wait till Friday to play mercenaries

@@Chanwsan I just completed this level. it looks like mech is needed to be on platform all time since dustoff zone acheved. On hard difficulty its unreal, so I made it on easy. Also, I dont know how to start trial of bloodright. what I need to do?
