Sign of experience. Never take your foot off the throttle, always control the rpm when making a shift, don't just let the engine fall off. EXCELENT video!

@lugger2010 Dr. Bill was a dentist in Aspen Colorado. He put himself through medical school in the 50's driving tractor trailers. He passed away in 2005 from cancer. I was proud to call Bill my friend.

That is one truly amazing truck- I've never even heard of this particular model of Mack before! And, the gentleman driving it made it look so effortless...what I'd give to ride a d learn from him!

Great job on this video. I've watched it many times. Wish I could have met and known Dr. Bill. You can tell he really enjoyed what he was doing. I had to laugh in "part one" when he said he saw a bit of the roof of a old Mack on his way somewhere and had to stop and check it out. I thot I was the only nut like that. Found my 56 Diamond T that way. Kept catching a glimpse of chrome stacks way back in the trees on some vacant land. Never saw anybody around and the neighbors didn't know. Eventually met someone that knew someone that knew who to talk to. 5years later and it's here. Not very many people understand the love of the old trucks. It's hard to find anyone that really gets it. Most folks seem to think you're an oddball when you talk about them (old trucks, twin sticks, Jake brakes etc). Oh well been called a lot worse so I guess oddball it is.

Boy I like the 'pop' the old Cummins had and the 2-handed shifting. I did that starting out on a DM with a Thermodyne and a quad 18 speed and 3/4 round of steering box slack. Had a lot of fun and a lot of interesting times too THANKS!

Lindsey - I met you at the Macungie show years ago and still have this video somewhere on VHS. Glad I found it on KZbin. I never ever get tired of watching this one or hearing that 275. Wish I could've met Dr. Bill, just missed him up in Massachusetts years ago. Thanks again.

Good looking smooth truck. First guy I realy ran for , as me and another guy coming back accross the mountains in winter wanted to be behind , naturaly I gave him heck , being the rookies first time , that he didnt trust me lol , boss was on the phone as we were talking I asked him how fast he drove in ice , snow , heavy rain whatever , I had been driving awhile , just first trip in the winter mountains , told me a piece of learning I tell everyone in their car , truck , whatever. Take a look around , then drive accordingly as to what speed or how fast you feel comfortable running off into the ditch. Great rule of thumb.

That man knows how to split those gear boxes no showing off just old school experience during the blizzard of 96 here in NJ I went with a buddy of mine to plow snow in a 1964 b81 Mack with a endt 673 and a 18 spd quad box I drive trucks mostly Mack’s 5 spd 6 spd mud stick 12 spd never drove a quad box a couple of hours of watching him then just doing it it’s not bad as some say spent 3 days splitting the driving with my friend something I’ll never forget to drive a piece of history like that very very good gear boxes can do a lot with them would be spectacular for curb pouring in a mixer truck

Believe me, I don't think I could learn even if I watched either guy for a month! I've only just come across your clips and your website, the youtube videos are amazing and a great taster for your full DVD's. I may buy some at a later date, but they do seem excellent value.

You can tell he can feel the gears and judge how to shift by feel. Those old trucks even when new did not take abuse and a driver was judged by how smooth and easy he was on the truck. A good driver with a good reputation good get a job anywhere

@bulldog0046 It was a long time ago that I shot this footage, but there wasn't much weight on the trailer that day, so he might have been starting out in second in the main and first in the splitter, or the other way around. He might also be skipping a combination that only gains a couple of hundred rpm's. Bill did a video with me some years later on Trucks with 2 Sticks.

Nice work, Dr. Bill. I only saw you scratch one and I think that was at 7:40 or there about. I remember riding with my father years ago when he was driving the old B model with the 5x3 and next to you, he was one of the best I've seen...go through them all and never scratch a one. I drove trailer for 29 years and had just a few miles on a 5x4 and was just getting used to it when I had to go back to a 5spd. Was 5th in the main box, up or back in this truck? God Bless, Jeff
