My crowning driver training achievement was to get a 20 year old truck driver who weighed 140 pounds through the CDL road test in a 359 Pete with a 5X4 in it with a 240" wheelbase and a 45' trailer. And he made it on the 1st try. Obviously a highly motivated driver.

My Father taught me how to drive a '52 10 yard International Dump truck when I was 11. It had a 5x4 with a 2 speed. That truck was the first thing I ever drove. The old man would put his arm through the steering wheel and steer with the bend in his arm and shift with his hands. That was 1976 and he had been driving trucks at the time since the 1950's.

ToreDL87 That is pretty sad. I am 23 now and I got my license to drive trucks last year and I tested on an International 8100 with a 53 foot trailer in the back and it had a 10 speed single shifter air splitter Eaton Fuller. I feel like I am fortunate enough to have learned how to even drive stick on a truck. I’ve driven an automatic truck once and I must say it wasn’t the same feel of driving a traditional stick. It is much more fun in my humble opinion to drive a stick shift truck, better control anyways. Now I drive a 1973 Mack R Model dump truck with an 8LL in it for work from time to time, easiest tranny to shift they say, but still a stick regardless.

Yep. This is a 220 with a T590 smoke turbo which makes it a 262. The boost gauge reading 10 psi of boost is normal on the 262s. They used what they call "smoke turbos" because all they were good for is cutting down smoke and lowering EGT's by a little, not much. Dad drove a dump truck that had a 262 in it and he said our 65 freightliner which had the 250 cummins in it had more power than the 262 did. Although the pump has been turned up on ours.

I used to drive a 1967 twin stick Diamond T, 5X4 Clark boxes behind a 4 cyl UD. Lacking power you had to be good on the sticks. I would just let go of the wheel and both hands on different sticks would have the truck singing that's for sure, one going up the other down splitting the gears. The accelerator pedal was between the clutch and brake pedals, something else to mindfull of. I graduated to an N series Volvo which had an 8 speed with a splitter, was much the same principle as the diamond. split changing up but never split changing down (full gear change only). @SlackTastic . It's a 262 Cummins. It needs to stay between 1700 and 2100 rpm. If you run them below 1700 you will pound the liners and rod bearings out of it and over 2100 is revving it higher than it's designed for. Thats why they had so many gears. To have enough gears to allow the driver to keep it between 17 and 21. The new diesels can run down to 1100 rpm or so all the way up to 2100 with the right programming.

@chevyapache1959 Brownie is short for Brown Lipe. They were a common aux transmission in early rigs until the RoadRanger type transmissions came along. I cut my teeth on an old '50's narrow nose Pete 3-axle straight truck. I think it was a 220 Cummins fitted with a Schwitzer supercharger. My uncle used to say, "Find 'em, don't grind 'em", then yell at me when I would prang a gear during a split-shift.
