I don't get to fence as much as I used to since college, but I still manage to go weekly. It can be hard to work into an adult life, but I'd totally recommend getting back into it if you feel up to it. I've read some interesting articles on the mental benefits - helps keep the brain exercised as it ages.

Statistically, he would be either dead in childhood or a farmer. Childhood mortality rate was at least 30% and there was no modern medicine. No antibiotics, no vaccines. People died all the time, especially infants and children. You could nick your finger and die of an infection. 95% of the population were farmers, and a lot of the elites were clergy or other non-combatants. The professional warrior elite was probably around one percent of the population in Western Europe. He could get levied or be forced to fight by circumstance, but then he wouldn't have much gear or training compared to the pros. The stats wouldn't be in his favor.
