From the BAYONET TRAINING MANUAL USED BY THE BRITISH FORCES, 1917 It presents a simple system of a handful of techniques to supply the soldier with. Interestingly, where it seems to diverge from earlier systems is how far forward the rifle is held. It's a very shortened point, even on the long thrust. I should think influenced by experiences of using bayonets in the trenches. Another interesting point to note: "It should be clearly understood that the butt must not be employed when it is possible to use the bayonet effectively."
@Taolan847210 күн бұрын
I imagine the "don't use the butt" bit is because using the butt requires a swing which results in the muzzle being pointed potentially at allies. A still-loaded weapon could potentially go off during bayonet combat.
@koiledPythonRain10 күн бұрын
I think it is such that the wielder can quickly bring the rifle back to the shoulder to shoot, for example with the Guard, Long Thrust, and High Short Thrust all staying relatively close to the shoulder

I've got a Marine Corps basic training manual from 1969. The fundamentals of bayonet fighting 1. Put the blade into the enemy 2. Do not wait for an opening; create one. 3. Aggressively attack the enemy in swift motions alternating between the face, groin and belly. The enemy will instinctively overcompensate to protect these areas, creating openings in others. 4. Do not stab a fallen enemy, stomp on their head or neck keeping your weapon at the ready to defend against others. That's from memory, but its something gnarly like that...
@robinswords5 күн бұрын
You'll be pleased to know then that the 1917 manual reads as follows: "The bayonet is essentially an offensive weapon-go straight at an opponent with the point threatening his throat and deliver a thrust wherever an opening presents itself. If no opening is obvious, then create one by beating off the opponent’s weapon or making a “feint thrust” in order to make him uncover himself."

Ironically it would possibly be more effective to just jab with the barrel and have a second knife on you rather than get your whole weapon stuck in one guy while other unknowns could push past the guy at you. Thoughts? I guess the limiting factor is you’d have to jab the face for a barrel to have a similar damage factor as a blade anywhere else.
@juhokuusisto93393 күн бұрын
@@josiahrandolphbaldwin8272 No. You could jam the knife stuck into a man, but bayonet and rifle has enough lever to be pulled out. Jab with the muzzle is a last resort techique when you don't have a bayonet on it. A blade/rod does more damage than just a barrel. And the moments when you need a bayonet you don't have the time to grab out the knife. With modern plate carriers you would have to bayonet the throat/face or the guts, so that makes it not as good as shooting in modern battlefield. But even so, a blade on a rifle has a threatening look to it, even more so than just the rifle. And if you are alone fighting, you're pretty much fckd. You should have your battlebuddy or the whole platoon there.

@@The_JovianThe first thought that came to mind was that it was used very much like a spear, but then again, not only were bayonets too short to qualify as a regular pre-industrial era spear, they were also meant to be used in close quarter encounters, like in trenches or even bunkers, since you can just shoot the other guy if you'd need a polearm to reach him. Righto sir, I grant you and your lineage my gratitude . I had left my manual in the foyer and was getting quite perturbed in regards to my bayonet. Once more I thank thee

This is also perfect because that way, you’re not actually exposing your back which is a blind spot that enemies would exploit.

Very close to modern bayonet drills. They trained us to parry/knock away the opponents weapon to the right, follow up with a butt stroke, followed by a downward slash of the bayonet, followed by a thrust/stab, twist the bayonet, and pull/withdraw it. It was a six step combat maneuver.
