the guards very similar to this in bolognese fencing (for both single and two handed sword) are definitely one of my favourites, it's just such a good guard

Cool name, cool guard, cool technique. I started learning with Fiore but I was young, and I didn’t pay attention. Now I’m an adult fencing Meyer, but I still keep this technique in my arsenal. My favorite play from Fiore by far. video fantastico!

Interesting interpretation of those "beat and return" actions - it never occured to me that this can be a description of an escalating strategy.

Great stuff as usual! One of my top 3 sword guards for sure.

What I like about this guard is that it conceals your range a fair bit. You hide your sword by moving it backwards and covering it a bit with your thigh. This way it's more difficult for your opponent to correctly assess your range, which makes for surprising thrusts. There is a similar stance with the dagger, where you hide it behind your body and thigh to confuse your opponent. Of course it's much harder to hide a longsword, but principle stays. Try it yourself. 1. Ask your students to get in pairs, one stands in Plow stance, other in high stance. They walk around and the one in high stance says STOP whenever they feel the opponent is in perfect range for thrust. They will be quite good at it. 2. Do the same exercise, but person standing in Plow now stands in dente di zengiaro. If done properly, it will be much harder for the other person to tell when they're in danger.

Adding to what you are saying, Vadi mentions something very similar with his posta di donna (which would be more of a low corona in fiore), stating that it's good because it hides it's reach.

I really enjoy this posta series, but I have noticed that most of the examples are how the various posta are to be used against either Breve or Longa. There are very few examples vs say Donna, Fenestra or Porta di Ferro except in those specific videos. I would be very interested your insights about how to use low guards against these posta.

Once again I've waited for my fencing class to try it out in sparring. I must admit whole idea of passing beat is very interesting. I try to think of it as of a feint. If opponent doesn't react I can continue, if not then pass to the other side and attack. Unless opponent does some sort of counter attack with closing the line it worked very well. I found it quite difficult at first but as the time passed I found it much easier, and implemented it's variations in general Using the guard used for a deflection was very challenging. Unless you are very good with timing it's quite difficult to execute it to a 100%. I found it much easier to use... well around middle of the sparring with a fencer. Around the time when they don't have full energy, but I'm not all that tired either. In general I love the idea and it looks so freaking bad asssssssss, but esp. against fast fencers feels impossible to execute As always, love your videos and thanks for helping me understand the concepts behind these guards. You are truly irreplaceable

Hello Federico! Thank you for this video, now I understand what Britanny was discussing with Martin in the video of the interview "does it look like Alber? Then treat it like alber!". By the way, when will we see a review/comparison of your Leon Paul masks (The HEMA mask and the Coach mask)? I am really interested in getting one for myself. I've seen Matt Easton's video, but I am interested in knowing your perspective.

what guard the best to counter a zwerch ? i'm sparring a lot with a fucking helicopter and so far the only solution i've find against him are : go back and dodge block the first hit with my guard at full force to totaly deflect it and counter attack instantly in his face on the other side I tried to use boar's tooth as the movement you show could interrupt the zwerch when its getting constructed, but most of the time i just cant get his sword and the zwerch fuck my right arm :x

think of posta de donna, but really in front of you with your hands low and the sword perpendicular to the ground. Then the same type of posta de donna sinestra, so on the left. You can cover the distance in front of you fast than your opponent can. So as much as they back and forth on you, just do the same between the two donnas. Ideally though, they do it once, you block and then pop them in the head while they are switching sides, and you bring your sword back to the other shoulder to catch their blade. If that makes sense.
