Nice one. As always :) Schlüssel is an interesting guard/ward. That thing seeing the manuals and manuscripts as pictures in motion is unique. Many fencers (me included) are doing wrong here i think. Thinking to static.

I'd like to see John Clement let his students try these techniques on him for once.

This application of the Schleussel only works if your student is wiling to do exactly what JC's does in the video.

I like this logic. Don't use the key guard on its own, it does nothing you couldn't get from other guards. But make sure whenever you step back to spin around, that's very useful.

Anti-JC propaganda is entertaining to read. Funnily enough, the joke's on you since you'll still be rubbish with the longsword at the end of the day.

I know I'm late to the party, but did this guy just advocate for turning your back to your enemy WHILE HE IS STRIKING AT YOU to go into a guard that he says is bad ("what am I going to do from that position!?") -- instead of just doing a Zornhau or a Versetzen? Furthermore, if your hanging guard is so weak that an enemy can just "press it down" then not even the "superior leverage" of the Schlüssel will help you (especially if you have to turn your back to the enemy whilst puling off that move). On top of that, pause the video at 2:12. If you lift up the blade of the attacker, he can cut your throat. If you fail to lift up the opponent's blade and it remains below your sword, the opponent can thrust into your flank/stomach area, move into a hanging guard and displace your counter-thrust. Good techniques must keep you safe while you are striking at the enemy. This one does not. The key is the wrong position to be in in this exchange. The only thing I can see work out if the opponent is unprepared is the last move (3:10) and only if that opponent is doing a "Danzig Hau," fainting an oberhau to go into a thrust. Anyway, that's my analysis: I think the technique he shows are too limited and too risky to be effective. They do look cool though

Because he's an idiot. If your oponnent has ever sparred with someone they immediately take their sword out of the bind when you take schlussel as a position. That is if he doesn't hit you when your back is turned..

Have you lost your mind? Why turn your back on your opponent for a block that can be easily turned into a hanging guard without even taking a step? This is nonsense...
@anyone5698 жыл бұрын
You turn back into a movie style parry, I triangle step to the outside and thrust and you never even saw me move so now you don't see where I am as you complete your spin and I am on your backside with a sword in your flank or ear. I agree this is ridiculous at best.
@AgentSmith100116 жыл бұрын
@Matthew Brown I think you've been brainwashed into thinking that spinning/showing your back is "always" bad. The truth is that it's not always a "bad" thing. You're underestimating the evasive strength of the technique in the video. It's entirely plausible in the right context.

Mostly Nonsense. JC's movement is so disordered, SO much of it is SO un-purposeful, twitchy....just a bad example for students.
@Burner.Account..6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's his understanding of "do not stay still in a guard" from the manuscripts. But instead of rotating around guards, he thinks twitching and shifting would present threat and help him spring back and forth.

Warlords0602, ever seen a boxing match? Or Bruce Lee performing techniques. Many professional fighters seem to think it is a smart thing to keep up fast legwork. Not so much in kickboxing, karate, or aikido. Of those the first two use legs for better reach, and the latter one use solid balance as a tool for performing throws.
