NB If you strip a tube with a wire brush mounted on a machine, you will have to sand always the tube because the wirebrush polishes the tube and the paint will not adhere correctly to the metal surface . regards Bart
@PithyBikes8 жыл бұрын
Hey Bart, Great tip!! I'll have to sand that tube then :)

Steve, I've had good success with welding the butted (thick wall) end of the ST to the BB shell
@PithyBikes8 жыл бұрын
ooh, I think for this tube that might not be an option because the ID is different on both sides. The thicker wall side ID fits the seat post well. I'll have to check again but I think that's how it measures..
@aspenbanjo8 жыл бұрын
i buy my ST's to fit the seat post on the non butted end

Find a class if you can. I took one in Oakland CA at a place called The Crucible. After that class I was hooked (obviously) haha.

You could take a full size PDF to an engineering firm or blueprint shop and get your frame CAD plotted. A blueprint shop would have 42" wide rolls of paper in their wide format machines. I mentioned this on the last vid but not sure if you saw the comment or not cuz it was buried a bit. Looking forward to more :)

try the other type of wire wheel (the one you are using is intended for flat surfaces.) also you can chuck up a wire wheel to you bench grinder. that's a little safer and easier to control.

Have you thought about taking the bike cad drawing and scaling up to life size and sending it to kinkos?
@PithyBikes8 жыл бұрын
+Nathan Hamler this is a really good idea. I will do this next time! 🙌
@BikecadCa8 жыл бұрын
I also recommend this. You don't even have to scale up the BikeCAD drawing. BikeCAD drawings are already full scale by default. www.bikecad.ca/fitting_the_titleblock

Try a 3M strip and clean disc, way more efficient at stripping than a wire brush cup

I'm sure there's an obvious answer to this but I can see why the tubes are always drilled through at the points where they are welded? I had wondered if it was just to let the purge gas through but I see there are much larger holes in the HT of the donor bike. What is the purpose of them?
@PithyBikes7 жыл бұрын
I think specifically on BMX bikes it's for weight savings, that's my guess anyway. I read the other day that for Brazed frames it's very important to have these holes because when the whole frame heats up it creates pressure inside the tubes and could cause the puddle to blow air out where the brazing is happening.

Those are good paint removers. You can work on softer metals without fear of digging into them, too.

Hello thank you for the information please i wanna know the steps that you followed to learn , since i am studying mechanical engineer and i am interested design bikes
@PithyBikes8 жыл бұрын
I might do a video on this subject because i get asked this on occasion. For now here's a summary - The first thing I did was take a short welding class. This I think is a great first step because it gives you a tactile feel for welding and you'll know right away if you think welding is something you want to continue learning. After that I took a few machining classes. Again, I think a tactile hands on approach is very helpful even if you plan to be in a 3d program most of the time. I think there's a lot of knowledge one gains just from the 'feel' of engineering you get from a hands on approach. After completing my welding and machining classes I was hooked and I knew I had to buy a welder, lathe and mill. From there the rest is pretty straight forward. Just start making stuff! :)

Well, I guess there's more to it than that especially with frame building. Do lots of google searches and go to the major frame building forums. I was looking at these two forums a lot. MTBR forum forums.mtbr.com/frame-building/ Bike forums www.bikeforums.net/framebuilders/ Next, and a more modern approach I suggest getting on Instagram and searching/following frame builders. Just search "Bicycle Frame Building"

you might think about going to Harbor Freight and picking up the 12" disc sander item #43468. With a coupon and when it goes on sale you can get it for around a hundred bucks. You will be throwing rocks at the grinder.

Pithy Bikes Where do you get the tubes
@PithyBikes8 жыл бұрын
For my first build I got tubes from henryjames.com . For this build I got them from Aircraft Spruce - aircraftspruce.com. More specialized components like drops, BB, and head tubes you can get from places in this list - forums.mtbr.com/frame-building/master-list-framebuilding-suppliers-595808.html
