I am a born and bred “Stokie” aged 64 . The way my City has been allowed to decay over the last 30 or so years is nothing short of disgraceful. Believe it or not Longton was once a thriving town, with pottery factories busy market, several pubs and prosperous retail businesses. “Jollee’s” was a famous Entertainment venue which had loads of world famous stars appearing ( check it out Billy) you will be amazed. It was also the original venue for the World Darts Championships. “Shelly’s” was another popular night club, notorious nationwide for the raves held there. These have now all gone, the town has been allowed to decay into the absolute tip it is today. Sadly this is typical of the City in general now. Stoke on Trent was once a thriving City, famous for its production of Pottery, also of Steel and coal. It is the home of Sir Stanley Mathews and Sir Reginald Michel( the inventor of the Spitfire). Self serving politicians, business men and a small thinking Council have led to the City becoming the embarrassment it now is. Don’t even get me started on the Monkey Dust scum !!

I’m glad my father’s long gone, it would break his heart to see what’s happened to Longton and the pottery industry in Stoke. He used to take such a pride in his job at Aynsley China , not far from where you were Billy … ‘Portland works’ on Sutherland Rd, bit further from Noshers. Potbanks were busy with workers and work was plentiful for anyone who wanted a job. Although the potbanks could be rough!! I used to love walking around Longton Market with my mum when i was kid in the 70s. There used to be 2 brilliant toy shops in there, selling action figures ‘Cyborg and Muton’. After shopping in the market, we’d get a cup of tea, from the Dorothy cafe. Then go to the bus station, back to Blythe Bridge.A different world back then.😢

Personally, I think the whole of the UK should take a stand irregardless of the financial implications imposed on us. Without that, future generations will be in total immiseration. The Americans are standing up and now it's time for the Brits. The UK businessmen / women need to use their influence and help to rebuild a better Britain. This is total dystopia.

Politicians gave Amazon tax-free status, and it's killing retailers.
@hairyhands8259
@hairyhands8259 Ай бұрын
@robd733 You clearly don't understand my comment. Amazon is able to sell cheaper products since it only pays voluntary tax which is about £5m per £1 billion turnover. They are allowed to expand their business and include such costs into the tax right off, which is paid for by the UK taxpayer. Sainsbury's pay more in taxes for their supermarkets than Amazon does despite it earning less money. Once Amazon is the monopoly, they will push up the prices. They are already squeezing retailers on the platform and forcing them to sell at low prices to kill off the high street.

Part of it is because the older generation were enjoying their free love and consumerist, self centered mindset with the youth revolution. Rockers, mods, hippies said goodbye to the old traditions and blew their minds on all sorts then came the punks, metal, ravers etc etc. With that came consumerism, materialism, self-centered mindset of "me me me" and they said goodbye to the old and the young. Meanwhile foreign families always look out for their own

Tesco owns a lot of land. If you watch the 2 part program on TV a few years ago. Of how Tesco started. A guy from 1st world war after the war his £30 he had bought lots of tea and sold it on a market and got more with the profit. Then put his money into shop's. In the 2nd world war could get fruit and veg for his shop's. Went around the country and bought all the farms with land that was for sale. And grown his own fruit and veg for his shops. After the 2nd world war everything went back to getting food stock. The Tesco owner had prime farms and land stock. Which over the years would now probably have houses and new towns built on them. He was a clever man with good work ethnics but now Tesco seems to open mega stores in town centres, which are killing local long-standing businesses.

Billy, next time you're in Stoke take a look around Tunstall and Burslem. They're even more run down than Longton and Hanley. Burslem in particular is full of once-beautiful old Dickensian and pre-Victorian buildings that are now derelict, burned out and falling to pieces. And in Tunstall recently there was a mass street fight between warring factions of homeless drug addicts. It was also officially named as the most boarded-up town in the UK a couple of years ago, so it's pretty rough around there. Might be worth taking a look sometime...

Even if you give people things they don't appreciate it and will try and sell it soon as you turn your back, it's all well and good but the ones who put their hands out to take are the least likely to give to you in your hour of need, I can't get on that wavelength but some humans are just ungrateful takers and they will see you skint and destitute even after you've done things for them, had loads of people like that around me, always promising to pay back but never do, now most of them are doing better than me I never heard from them since. Pretty much 99% of my generosity has been forgotten about, some people just don't care and don't ever intend to do anything for you, they just see you as a easy target.

As a pole who moved to stoke at the age of 5 now 25, seen stoke in this way is horrific, I went to primary school in abbey hulton, which at the time was your typical council estate but it was thriving with local shops, people coming together, local clubs where people of different ages use to get together. moving on to high school which was in Longton (st Thomas moore) longton use to be so full of life. Cafe, local businesses, market full of people everyday, the market with cex etc the little square 13:00 use to always have live music, buskers, every shop been open, nothing boarded up etc kids could runaround care free and parents didn’t have to worry. Those were the days, unfortunately the local council and politics them selves haves ruined places like stoke and other places like it and the hard working people of stoke have to deal with this on a daily basis and it’s only getting worse.

Ots mad watching you walk around Longton buddy. There used to be a lot of money around Longton when the pot banks were there. You can see from the architecture of the building. Mum and dad used to go there shopping in the late 80s. The large Tesco did kill off the town centre. The market used to be a real hussling place as well. The local council also put up their rates which also drove out businesses. There's some cracking building around the old pot banks but they're that run down now that they're past repair.
