Back in '71 when I was in Vietnam, I started playing around with batteries that we had, I served in communications, so we had plenty of batteries on hand. One night I was really bored (a thing that came very naturally there back then) and dug out an old Magnesium battery for our backpack radios, the AN/PRC-77 (successor to the PRIC-25 of song and legend). I would stick a piece of commo wire (WD-1) in the negative, another in the 17 volt (if I recall right) and I could make the copper wire of the WD-1 glow and heat up enough to light a Kool, but the steel strands was where the magic lived, could actually run a bead of weld with that big old battery using the copper leads to form the ground and the steel to melt the metals together! Why I was having a GREAT time, till one of the cells exploded with a tremendous bang! Half the unit must have come awake, all wondering where the fire was coming from. Well now I was sure as hell not going to tell anyone it was me, there were men running to the bunkers for cover, search lights came on in the guard towers around the unit, and there I sat with my battery and some commo wire with the old Alfred E. Newman grin thinking "What, me worry?"

Having run one of these PSU's here for several months I have found it to be a very useful addition to the work bench with one proviso. After much use the multi turn voltage control potentiometer became intermittent causing the output voltage to swing about unpredictably whilst trying to make adjustments. On investigation the problem was quickly located to the potentiometer which appeared to be of dubious quality. A new more reliable multiturn (10K) was fitted and the problem was easily fixed.

@@12voltvids Keep an eye on it would be my advice, the voltage on mine started jumping around alarmingly (including upwards) when adjusting the multiturn and was most noticeably when monitored on a moving coil meter.

They can throw noise into the receiver. Some are better than other. Most of the ones designed for the ham radio market have pretty good filtering. This one isn't bad, the other one terrible. Remember I am holding the antenna next to the power supply, and I had a little F'up here. I had the power supply plugged into my isolation transformer, so the cabinet was NOT grounded. The other supply (the noisy one) was grounded, and it still threw up more noise. I have since moved things around here, and plugged this one in directly into a grounded outlet, and I am happy to report that the noise is considerably lower with the metal cabinet earthed.

While linear power supply have the advantage of simplicity, some applications require switching power supplies. Computers haven't had linear PSU for a good 30 years. Can you image a laptop with a 60 watt transformer? Also flat screens wouldn't be flat without switching power supplies. Also have to ask, haven't you seen the crash test video's of old vs new cars? With car's from the 60's, you become the crumple zone.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 6 жыл бұрын
There used to be a saying about old cars "unsafe at any speed" and then there was the old 60's era Mustangs with the solid steering column. It was referred to as "Spear O Matic" because a small front end crash usually resulted it the driver being impaled on the steering shaft. Nope I'll take a new car any day over an old one. I won't even take a ride in an old car these days. They are nice to look at, and they look cool cruising down the road, but nope, not for me. I like all the safety features of new cars, stability control, anti lock brakes, scarebags ect. Now, linear power supplies work good at some things. Like the AC distribution network. For reliability a big ass transformer, and full wave bridge rectifier and big filter cap will get the job done. At about 65% efficiency. A good switch mode PSU will also get the job done, at about 95% efficiency. Hell televisions haven't used power transformers since tube went away. All modern solid state TVs used a hot chassis, and a 130V linear regulator connected directly to the rectified AC line. That supplied the horizontal section, which drive the flyback transformer. All the low voltages for the rest of the set were taken off secondaries wound on the flyback transformer. Guess what type of power supply that was. Yup you guessed it, a switching power supply. In this case the switch was operating at a fixed frequency at the horizontal scan rate. The voltage on the secondaries was controlled by regulating the raw DC voltage.

But a problem I had was if you set say 100ma while testing some circuits and inadvertently cause a short or have something switch that causes a overload the supply did not limit at 100ma but allowed a surge current to flow while the output caps discharge then it current limits at 100ma I have not seen this shower on any review. I've yet to use it for anything yet so I haven't seen if it does this under load for any length of time, just wondering. Also, I want to say that when I received my own it did not work. Upon inspection of it's internal parts I discovered that two major components had broken solder joints from shipping (i assume). It's only 2 power transformers inside in this bench power supply.. not 3.. that midle small transformer is for driving big transistors.. ;) As it is in the computer ATX supply's.. But anyway, great review video.. :) For AM radio tests, try to put in bench power supply DC output line big external electrolitic capacitor.. 4700-10000uF 50V-63V will be great for noise reduction.. Capacitor is connected before power on power supply.. But warning, this may affect current limit etc.. that's mean, that capacitor is attached only when test radio is known as working (power and amp part) and there is need to test out tuner sensitivity etc.. ;)

@@12voltvids Hmm.. Maybe.. Depends on how supply is reacting when it's turned on.. If outputs is connected in that stage, then capacitor charges up.. if not connected and connects later, then is possibility, that cap may show as short.. Anyway, soft start circuit is very simple and it's no difficult to build as external module.. :) I just forgot, that my bench supply holds modiefied AT supply internals and that's why integrated big cap works excellent.. And yes, back in day's, if i connected that cap, when supply was running, it goes in over current protection mode.. that's why cap was leaved always connected inside multifunction laboratory supply case.. And extra thing is, that i can easy run car cigarette lighter, car compressor etc.. heavy load from it.. and no noise or spikes on power rails.. Without that big cap, it can't run big inductive loads.. but 12V rail, for that AT supply, was originally rated for 10A..

surely you have an oscilloscope so you don't need to use your car radio for testing :P
@12voltvids

What will an oscilloscope tell me as far as how much RFI it is throwing out. I was using the car radio because many cheap switching power supplies throw out much hash that is picked up by sensitive car radios. If you heard the other power supply you would understand. It isn't ripple on the DC that is causing the noise. On the scope it will be perfectly clean. It is noise from the chopped side of the circuit where bursts of noise radiate all over the band. A spectrum analyzer would show this.

Is the buzzing the lamp or the PWM?

All kinds of things make noise in my shop. Fluorescent lamps, the monitor ect. Even this power supply makes noise, the internal fan that ramps up and down in speed depending on how much load is put on it.

@@12voltvids Thanks. Just wondering how much noise this one makes. Seems acceptable for something in this price range
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 жыл бұрын
@@pleasecho2 It doesn't make any until the fan ramps up. When under low load the fan runs very slow.

@@12voltvids It doesn't sound like a serious issue but I suppose other cooling solutions might work if it were really important.

Hi, Can this power supply be used to detect shorts on a motherboard?
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 6 жыл бұрын
You can limit the current, so if something draws more than the limit, it prevent overload and turn on a light to show that the limit has been reached.

The isolation unfortunately doesn't look that good. If you look past the isolation slots, you can see tracks from the secondary and primary within 2-3mm of each other (on the back of the board, it's hard to see what's going on at the top side). So the isolation is bad to marginal at best.

Jernej Jakob Those traces are the feedback which runs to the optocoupler. They are not running in a High current area. The areas of high current where the DC secondary side is in proximity to the hot primary side is totally separate and isolated. Go back and take a close look.
@brainndamage
@brainndamage 6 жыл бұрын
12voltvids I am taking a close look and I see two places (bottom left & top right) where the isolation slots end that have primary & secondary side traces coming close together. It doesn't matter if they're high or low current. F.e. the top right has one rail coming from the primay rectifier to the switching transistor leg, right next to a small trace that goes off far into the secondary circuitry. It's not horrible, but not up to regulations either.

I would hazard guess that the Chinese regulations on electromagnetic compatibility are either non-existent or very lax!

No faith in this review, powering a radio? Thiught you were going to try and blow it up. Mine just like this one went out after just three months of light use . When a company sends you a product you're more inclined to say good things about it. Can't test it for 10 minutes and say it's good. Use it for two or three months and then make a review
