Come join me on this amazing must do NZ walk in the heart of Mount Cook Village!
I've been wanting to do some Mount Cook Village walks for the past few years, so it was nice this past winter to get down to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park and start exploring some of the amazing day hikes for myself.
And what better introduction to have than the Kea Point Track, a short 1 hour return track to an expansive viewpoint across Mueller Lake towards the main event, Aoraki Mount Cook itself!
Something I wasn't expecting, though, was the avalanche activity in this region! Whilst I was on the track there were no fewer than 3 avalanches off the face of nearby Mt Sefton. The crazy avalanche conditions this year have meant that avalanches have been occurring in alpine regions at a much higher rate, but luckily there was no danger to me on the Kea Point Track!
This was such a great introduction to the Mount Cook New Zealand winter, and definitely one of the Best Walks on New Zealand's South Island that I've experienced so far!

I was just thinking it had been some time since I watched one of your videos. Then this popped up on my feed. Such fun to watch your adventure. It has been a very warm summer in the States. Seeing the cool weather there makes me want to get out here on a hike. Thanks!

Yes, I'm trying to get them out as regularly as I can, but unfortunately its not as often as I would like! But thank you so much for watching, I really appreciate it. Hope you managed to get in some good hiking this past season despite the heat!

Kia ora Michelle, when im hunting, driving or hiking the nth & sth islands i would almost get to the point where i would say " oh well seen one mountain you've them all" but then i turn a corner and "bang" not rivers or lakes but ocean views as far as the eye can see "magic" it was like I could breath again and now the mountains start looking stunning again...🤣😂 id be a very sad man if i had to travel hours to get to a beach haha:), this all sounds silly i know but that's my take on this beautiful country, cool video my friend Kia kaha, much love from whakatane❤

What a beautiful observation John, and yes, you're right.... if we didn't have the contrasts I don't think we'd appreciate the peaks so much. I think that's why I've always loved the South Island so much, being from the relatively 'tame' North!

Great to see this side of Mueller Lake! Have always walked the Hooker Valley track on the other side. Need to do this one next time 👌

Oh wow you've been missing out! It's definitely easy to miss though, especially if you prefer longer walks. I wouldn't have done it either had I not been short on time.. but I'm so glad I did!

What a spectacular track.. I've done that in the summer, but it looks like a very different experience in the winter. How cold was it?

Definitely well worth the walk in winter, but you do need to be aware of avalanche danger! It wasn't too bad, it was freezing overnight but got up to 6 or 7 degrees C during the day.

Does that mountain always have snow on it? With mountains like that, knowing where to go can be a bit confusing as many different routes.
@LongWhiteGypsy

Yes Tristan, there's usually always snow on the upper reaches of the high peaks in this park. You'd have to be an experienced mountaineer to climb up this one!
