Searching for the best walks NZ? Looking for some must do NZ walks and hikes? Try the Hooker Track!
The Hooker Valley Track New Zealand (Mount Cook Track) is everything you've been looking for... and more! This 10 kilometre (3 hour) round-trip mount cook walk is one of the top things to do NZ and highly regarded as one of the best New Zealand hikes!
The Hooker Valley hike takes you through the heart of the Hooker Valley at the tip of Lake Pukaki at New Zealand's tiny alpine settlement, Mount Cook village. On the way you'll pass alpine boulder fields, glacial lakes, skirt around sickeningly high glacial terminal moraine walls, all the time surrounded by some of the tallest peaks of New Zealand's South Island.
At the furthest reaches of the Hooker Valley hike is Hooker Lake and Hooker Glacier. One of the most visited glaciers in the country, it's also one of the most photographed, with New Zealand's highest mountain, Aoraki Mount Cook, sitting directly behind it.
The highlights of my Hooker Valley Track winter hike were the avalanches on the snow-capped peaks, towering seracs on the high alpine glaciers, frozen lakes (complete with icebergs!)... and also this wee gem of a hut which is completely hidden from view and totally SECRET if you don't know it's there!

I love that you do so many of these walks as a free independent woman on your own...very inspiring for me!😊

You're such a sweetheart, and you can TOTALLY do it too. Start small and build up gradually, that's my best advice :) Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!

What a great video! We are coming to NZ in March and this hike has been on my bucket list for many years - I can’t wait! How long was the detour to Hooker Hut? I’d love to check it out!

Thank you! Yeah, this is definitely worth the wait (speaking from experience!). So it was actually reasonably short, about 10 minutes I think, but you need to be reasonably comfortable with following a poled route :)

I apologize I have not seen the area before so I did not know the name of the mountains. As you said there are lots of them. Whilst those look big mountains, mountains in other countries can be way larger than that. I do want to see the Waitakere Ranges though I don't know how to get there and could be challenging and busy. Must see but how to go about it. Sometimes I understand things aren't just easy with a mountain. Hiking is very very challenging. Thank you for your responses.

Yep, mountains are tricky! Best not to go if you don't have mountaineering experience.

I don't really want to 'like' this comment so I'll send a heart instead. I'm so sorry to hear about your friends' passings. The mountains sure are stunning, but you're right... so many people have lost their lives.

Looks great. There is no track directly up the mountain itself?
@LongWhiteGypsy
@LongWhiteGypsy 9 ай бұрын
Which mountain? There's a lot of them :) And plenty of tracks which go through them. There's no 'walking' track up Aoraki Mt Cook, but it can be climbed. As can Mount Sefton. But you need expert level experience to do it. The closest most trampers/hikers get is to Mueller Hut on the Sealy Range.
