Ahh. Wow this Eponine is so different than other ones I've seen. She is so much more like the one in the brick! A lot of times Eponine is played like the female hero figure and given a really sympathetic edge along with making her similar to a perfect personna but I like this one, she seems like who she was in the book. A little crazy, flirty but tough as well Over all i think Celia did amazing!

Norm Lewis is my second-favorite Javert ever, second only to Quast. Adam Jacobs is the new Michael Ball. He's amazing. And Celia is a perfect almostHugocrazy Eponine. Awesome.

It's supposed to be scary. The director of the revival wanted to make Eponine more creepy and desperate, and Celia Keenan Bolger acts it perfectly. If you watch Celia's On My Own, it is a gem because of the acting work in it. They also went away from the traditional 'cute' Eponine which was a very wonderful and welcome change. For me, at least.

Celia Keenan-Bolger is one of my favorite Eponines, and I adore Norm Lewis and Adam Jacobs, and I've been a huge fan of Drew Sarich since I heard him in the German version of "Hunchback of Notre Dame." Too bad no one ever caught Celia during the scene where Javert is talking to the Thenardiers after Valjean ran away. Adam, who is looking for Valjean and Cosette, looks up to Celia and asks if she saw where they went, and she points in the opposite direction of where they ran. It's awesome. I love the little things Celia did with the character.

Interesting combination for your Javert. Anyway, reading the book helps bring out the character a lot. That's the problem with Hugo's writing. These characters are real with the same thoughts and feelings as us. It makes for an incredible read but also makes it hard to cover them due to the many character attributes (but then it is always interesting to see the various interpretations people use)

I had a bit of difficulty with that too. Javert is the son of a gypsy and a galley slave (convict) so it's possible that he was black, can't remember how he was described. However I'd been so used to caucasian Javerts that it was a bit odd to see Norm playing him (not that I'm racist, I just like the characters to be correct i.e. Fantine was supposed to have long beautiful blonde hair). However, Norm is awesome in this part and I'm glad they chose him for this part.

I like the way Marius and Enjolras seems so powerful in here, looking down (literally) at the streets, acting as they are already seen as the gods who will make it better. Drew Sarich looks georgeous fully dressed up in his shool clothing like that; pity he doesn't wear it all, all the show long :p like everyone else, even Marius.

Norm Lewis should've kept the hat, beard and baton. Why did they remove these awesome attributes in the 25th anniversary version? And for that matter, why didn't Philip Quast get to sing this in the 10th anniversary version? Why are the most monumental performances of this musical so pathetically executed? D:

@laxbellexmort -- Oh, I would have been happy if Pirelli were played by a woman who could successfully cross-dress and sing the role. The one I saw was just very obviously a woman (petite, curvy, smooth-faced, pretty) and she didn't have such a great singing voice (for Pirelli's range or overall, I couldn't tell). I agree that Javert does get some wiggle-room, but only as much as all the other leads. They're French people in 1832. That's his racial "definition," if you will.

@laxbellexmort i read ur comments but on stage versions the best voice wins. in a movie you are suppose to cast a character based on how the character is suppose to look. like eponine for example is suppose to be very unattractive but all of the women who played ponine were beautiful. for POTO christine is meant to be blond and enjolras in les mis is suppose to be blond too.

@laxbellexmort --Agreed. I mean, there's nothing wrong with his performance. I simply find it harder to "fall into" the story when something like that is inaccurate. In the recent run of Sweeney Todd, the barber was played by a woman, and it felt SO wrong, like a high school production where not enough boys tried out to fit all the male roles. And I doubt I could handle Porgy and Bess if a lead character were played by a white person.
@Haephasto
@Haephasto 16 жыл бұрын
In truth, they should all be doing French accents for it to be authentic. Neither British nor American are realistic. But that's not the thing to hate the singing for, I think.
@laxbellexmort
@laxbellexmort 14 жыл бұрын
@threescoreandten Well, actually, I saw Sweeney Todd with a woman playing Pirelli, and it was actually quite good- her voice was really excellent for the part, and it was difficult to tell she was a woman. However, I have no doubt that it can be disastrous at the same time. But generally, I feel that casting really has to stick with the characters' profiles. Javert, though, in the world of the musical, isn't racially defined. In the book, yes, but it's not like Porgy and Bess or Mimi in RENT.
@threescoreandten
@threescoreandten 14 жыл бұрын
@djdanny9 -- It's not racist; it isn't suggesting that any race is superior or inferior, and it isn't insulting any particular race. It's just a matter of historical accuracy (or literary accuracy; in this case, it's both). I like a play to *look* believable, so I'm fine if Javert looks a bit racially different from the cast: darker, etc. (he is, after all, half-Romany), but if he looks like he's straight from West Africa, it's a little more difficult for me to pretend he's French.
@literaryromantic

I saw this cast, except Drew was still playing Grantaire. I loved it, but I prefer when Drew moved up the ranks and love his Enjolras and Javert. Too young to really play a believable Valjean, but a phenomenal actor nonetheless.

@djdanny9 It....it isn't actually an issue of being racist. If a character is called to be a certain description, then that's that. It's like there being a male character in a show, and a female isn't cast to play him. Because that's not the character. It's like...in RENT, you rarely(if ever) see anyone white as Mimi. Because Mimi isn't white. Similarly, if someone's acting doesn't fit a character, singing doesn't matter. They won't be cast. It's just logic. However, this Javert kicks ass.

@djdanny9 I don't think you understand. I ask again about RENT. You have a character named Mimi Marquez. The character's profile is that she is hispanic. Thus you do not cast a white woman. With Javert, you do get some wiggle-room, because it's not concretely defined that he's white- unless you read the book. In the realm of the play, he's not described in that way. It's important, though, to pay attention to characterization and adhere to it. It's not a racist thing, like you previously said.

Here's one question. Why doesn't Javert just arrest Thenardier? He saw him attacking Valjean on the street. Also, what did Javert mean by: "Let the old man keep on running. I will run him off his feet. Everyone about your business, clear this garbage off the street"
@laxbellexmort
@laxbellexmort 14 жыл бұрын
@ImUrFanGirl While that is SOMETIMES the case, no. If, IN THE SHOW, a character is supposed to have a certain description (again, I'll use my example of Mimi in RENT- she's Hispanic. She just *is*. That's a part of her character description), then they will and should be cast accordingly. The best voice doesn't win. If you don't fit the role, you won't get cast, even if you outsing everyone. Sorry. However, AS I ALSO SAID, for this SHOW, Javert isn't defined, so it's not as significant.

Probably because it isn't necessary. A British accent is no more accurate than an American one in a piece set in France. And there is a distinction between Gavroche's speech and Javert's, even with American accents and if you can't hear that you really aren't paying attention. Javert is being played by Norm Lewis.
