I can imagine the joy of chatting with friends over making a beautiful quilt. A handmade quilt is not only beautiful and warm, it's a work of community and love. A group of women in my town made a quilt, and it will be raffled off to raise funds for our library expansion. I'm sure the raffle will bring in tons of money, and the winner of the raffle will be delighted.

@sewcrazybaker2 жыл бұрын
That quilt being worked on is not on a rack. It's actually in a quilt frame. I had one of those for many years until we moved to a home with no room for one. Now I live in a small house, but we have a large barn out back. I do all my sewing on the 2nd floor of this barn. There's plenty of room for another quilt frame, but now I take my quilt tops to a shop that has a long arm machine. I used to go to Amish Quilting Bees a lot, but I haven't been to one in many years. I live in northwest Ohio, next to Lake Erie. Amish Country is a 2 and a half hour drive south. I love your videos! Thank you so much for sharing with us.

Growing up, my family used to vacation in Lancaster the end of every summer. There was a lovely resort, that had 2 golf courses, which is why my Dad wanted to go. And the food was great, tons to do so Mom was happy as well. This left me with a lifelong interest in the differences between what we think of the Amish vs how they truly live and WHY. I never thought I'd learn it decades later (and probably almost 20 yrs ago now). I now live a much longer drive away, but wanted to go back to Amish Country. It was a long, wonderful getaway with a friend, if you don't count the hellish drives (monsoons both ways). My friend had her heart set on taking a tour of Amish Country. I would rather stab myself in the eyes then be on a Greyhound of tourists anywhere, but esp Amish Country. So I scoured the internet and found a small group tour run by a woman who was friends with the Amish. You went in your car, and she came with you. It would be 1 to 3 cars. PERFECT. Well one of the stops was Miss Fannie's kitchen for cookies and lemonade. I have mentioned this stop here for another reason, but I learned more in Miss Fannie's kitchen than I did in countless books, videos and documentaries. Her kitchen looked my my kitchen. I think she may have had more knicknacks than I did LOL But like this home, many had a religious or nature tone. The modern kitchen and stove were run by gas or battery. So my takeaway was it was the goal of remaining "separate" and independent, rather than decor, that mattered. The key was focusing on the values the Amish community hold highest....family, love, G-d, supporting each other. I think many modern families could do with a dose of this lifestyle to counteract kids who never look up from phones and never spend time enjoying helping others. Anyway this video reminded me a great deal of that day. Best I gather, more Amish live like this than the way we think aka Swazentrueber style with outhouses. It's HOW they live that is most different! Sorry long memory lane post

Excellent video ! And most everything i saw in it surprised me.. definitely way more progressive then the Amish around here..I get my calendars from "Bylers Rustic Furniture" I buy a lot of Thier stuff it's all mostly Hickory then Oak and all handmade absolutely highest top quality and dirt cheap..it's built to last many generations..the quilting room is always awesome to see.. people don't realize how much time and work goes into making a Amish quilt..we have a local Amish home here that sells all of the quilts made by the local Amish community..they make everything from baby blankets to cozy up blankets to the full size bed cloths coverings..the prices are NOT cheap when it comes to quilting products..but they will last forever with proper care..that would make a great video to focus on the quilting..it's kinda big deal when the women get together and quilt..this Amish home is very beautiful and cozy but way more cluttered than any of the homes I've been in..I still don't like those gas lights the Amish use..just this past Friday morning we lost a family of 5 Amish that all died as a result of fire..it hasn't been determined yet what caused it but it sure wasn't an electrical fire..it would be awesome to see a video on the quilt making and now that it's fall it's cider season.. fascinating to watch them make cider the "old fashioned"way..if you've never seen it done I caution you.. everything goes into the cider press..some apple may have worms bugs etc that get missed when the pick the apples because a lot of the apples come off the ground..there's no charge for the extra protein..lol..and the cider is not pasteurized so it does become "hard" cider..gots alcohol..they do make a lot of vinegar with it as well.. thank you for sharing your outstanding video..have a better one..✌️🙏

Thanks for another great video. My wife and I were just down to Shipshewana. Nice warm days, in the 80's, but noticed that the young men/boys were all wearing stocking caps, as do the Amish in our area. Is there a reason why? Pretty hot for stocking caps. Thanks Eric!!
@AmishAmerica2 жыл бұрын
Good observation, they do wear them especially in that community, even when the weather is warmer as you noticed. I think it's just preferred to the traditional hats and it's become "the norm" in that community. You need to wear something on your head but a brimmed hat is more clunky than a stocking cap. It is a more materially progressive community overall. You wouldn't really see the same in most other communities. Another example of a more regional headwear is the bandannas you might see on men in the Ethridge, TN community, which interestingly is one of the more conservative places

What really surprised me was what looked like a small tub/jar of Vick's Vapor Rub that you use on your chest and back when you have a bad cold. When I was young it was in beautiful glass jars that were the identical colour of the tub on the kitchen dresser, though nowadays the tub is plastic. I also thought the Amish would make their own version as I do, as I've surmised the company changed some of the ingredients quite a few years ago and I found it didn't really help and had become expensive. Hello to all from sunny Scotland.

Beautiful home and interesting to see. Truthfully what stood out to me was the disrepair of some of the items especially in the kitchen with broken cabinets. Since traditionally Amish are known for their craftsmanship and more specifically cabinetry. I found it odd that theirs were falling apart. While totally understandable as with use and wear they do at times need a rubber band or something creative to keep them working, that is what stood out to me.
