Thanks! I thought my chances of finding any info at all for such an old and cheap product were quite slim, and I was sort of right since there isn't all that much other than this! I found my system in the recycling room and used it as an emergency replacement for when my receiver died on me, and I must say that I'm quite impressed with the performance for what it is. And I'm apparently not alone in thinking along those lines! :-) I've been pondering different ideas for building a serious portable "BoomBox" for a while. I've got a bunch of battery packs from scrapped eScooters which will supply the power for the system, and with a few hundred Watts of continuous output and several hundred Whrs of capacity available I must admit to having placed my ambitions sort of high, even if it's not hard to accomplish, and I've even got most components needed! eg: Car stereo (4x30W class D), bags full of satellite speakers and a bunch of Woofers/amps (Canton, Pioneer, JBL, Logitech and two whole sets of the excellent Cambridge MegaWorks 510Ds). Built in a cabin sized roller bag, powered by multiple batteries, I should quite easily be able to build a potent subway car/bus shaker! :-D But! As I retired the Z4 I realised that it would be perfect for a pilot/learning/"lite" project to start with! It does produce a Ton of sound from a few Watts and small size, and the Bandpass design also produces a LOT of low frequency from a 3" speaker in a tiny box! I've been thinking along those lines from the start for just that reason, but a serious BP config takes some serious designing... there are plans and shortcuts available, I know, but I like to make my own stuff, and mostly from things I scrounge up for free, that's half the fun! A £10 RFID copier was a game changing investment, as I now have access to most recycling rooms in my area! For now and to start with I was after the internal Voltage of the system. 14V is about was I was both hoping for and expecting as it is pretty much optimal for a "12V" system. (For those who don't know, a car battery that is at an actual 12V is pretty much empty, 13,8V is a typical voltage from transformers for 12V systems, and when you rev the engine of a car the Voltage rises to 16V+). As I have access to several high performance and capacity batteries, I will be wanting a couple of 12V outputs on the system, to run all kinds of other auxiliary equipment like a cooler, lights, chargers and what have you! If I'm going to be lugging around a fairly large bag for the system, I might as well cram as many functions as I am able into it. ;-) I do have a tendency to rant... Well met Ted

...series tuned 6th order bandpass subwoofer enclosure with a passive radiator instead of external bass port...and for home use + mass produced...maybe only just this Z4 and the older Z3 speaker systems had these types of enclosures...no other models, no other brands...there exists more Logitech models and speaker systems from other brands with passive radiators, but they are just simple passive radiator enclosures, on some Logitech models with down firing active speaker...and in satelites why are those passive radiators?...the answer is simple: to extend the midrange frequencies...for those who were upset on that this model or the Z3 is a "fake" or "scam" because of the passive radiators, they were very wrong, because passive radiator enclosures are hard to design correctly + a series 6th order enclosure with passive radiator is one of the types "the hardest possible to design correctly" enclosures, so big thumbs up for engineers who designed this for Logitech :) ...btw, word wide known mass produced interesting passive radiator speakers from other brand: Phillips - the wOOx speakers: I do not remember the model number, but I had one: on the front: bottom - active woofer, top - passive radiator ("wOOx" speaker), between these 2 on the enclosures sides were the mids / highs, and at rear a bit higher from the center - a regular bassport (flared aeroport).

Quite a few models with this subwoofer design actually - Logitech Z-4, Z-4I, Z-3, Z-3e, Z-340, Z-540, Z-640 and X-620, and it was originally the Labtec LCS-2424 as Logitech acquired Labtec (the Z-340 even has Labtec stamped on the speaker magnets etc). This is a very good computer subwoofer design. I bought back a Z-4 not too long ago - a few years ago I had given a Z-3 (that I had bought for £4) to a friend and corner-loaded the subwoofer in the room she had it in. It sounded like much more than a 4" driver powered by a real 16 watts RMS, it was actually shaking doors and stuff in the 40ish Hz region! I'm looking at getting back a Z-2300 and even Z-5500, as I do miss them! Even though I have moved onto big audio equipment since my Logitech days.

@Techscrews2 жыл бұрын
passive driver is 8inch, but real is 4 inch :)
@stevengoodman3498 Жыл бұрын
Can you unhook the small driver and just put a real 8 inch subwoofer in the front opening using the existing hook up wires? Or is it's amp unable to supply enough power to make it work? That would seem like a proper fix.
@westelaudio9434 жыл бұрын
I can understand why you would use a bigger passive radiator on the subwoofer, but on the mid/high satellites they are completely useless and just there for fakery.
@94XJ2 жыл бұрын
They do help bolster around 150hz on the mains. There's an audible difference if you prevent them from moving. I would agree they're mostly for looks since these speakers have a weird response curve but they do help smooth the overall frequency response a bit. All in all, for a crappy set of speakers I bought over 15 years ago for $49 I'd say they're pretty good for such a cheap setup.

I use only the main unit as a subwoofer for my hifi system to help with lowest frequencies. As weird as it might be, it works. It produces deep bass (but I insist, I use it only to help). I thought that this large membrane is a bass speaker :) Besides, I am surprised that there is no material to mute in the column .. I have the same set and I was thinking about the bass outlet in the subwoofer, but I see that it makes no sense with this speaker design. thanks for the video. 👍

That's not an 8" driver, as advertised. I stumbled on this video while researching a replacement for my 15 years old system, I carried over from NL in the USA. I now feel better about the system with a subwoofer based on a 6.5" driver, I just ordered.
@ВладимирИльин-о4к3 жыл бұрын
With a certain ratio of the resonance frequencies of the front and rear chambers of the subwoofer, you can get an unprecedented speed of vibration damping. The designers came close to this. But that's not all, there are three such frequencies, when using 2 of them you can get a third, which is much lower, by almost a third of an octave. Just don’t ask me why? This anti-gold section is a special frequency ratio. Perhaps this is the law of multiplicity and mutual absorption of low-order harmonics.

Thanks a lot for this video! My Logitech Z4 and i think that the 51mm speaker driver from the satellites are a bit tired, they sound like there's no bass any more, the subwoofer is working fine thoug! Where I can buy satellite speaker/audio driver to replace? I bought 2 sets of this speaker system, but those satellites tend to make distorted noise at specific (+equalized) songs/frequency especially with higher loudness. After 16 years or so I think the rubber membrane around the audio driver is rather hard than soft so produced sound is affected..
