If you cannot see it, then you can pinch the tape measure together and then sort of walk your hands down it, holding firmly until you get the number closer to you. I

You don't have to see the number, just bring the tape together and identify two numbers that line up. Large number (minus) smaller number then (divide by 2) and add the smaller number back on. That's your height. 👍 (So now you know) 🤣

@@wendyev310 the video shows him trying to measure a 12 foot ceiling (or 144 inches). Almost impossible to read the tape at that distance. So instead just raise to the ceiling and identify two numbers that match up. This would give you 3 numbers. From the floor to the lower number is the first height. The second height is the larger number minus the smaller number then divided by 2 (because that section goes to the ceiling and back down). Then simply add the first height to the second height for total ceiling height. 👍

If you can't see the number, there's 2 ways: -1st method: Match the total length of the tape (max) to a value in the tape (reference). Then subtract the reference from the max, then divide by 2, then add the top length to the reference. Length = (reference) + (top length) Top length = (max - reference) / 2 -2nd method: Match the beginning of the tape, which is 0, (reference) to the total the total length of the tape (max). Then divide by 2, You'll get the length. Length = (reference) + (top length) Top length = (Max - reference) / 2 Since reference is 0 => Length = (Max) / 2

That's how I do it..but you can also measure top down to the middle of the wall, mark it on a number with no fractions say 48" and not 48 1/4 as an example. And then measure from the floor to your mark. And add the two together. (Only recommend if you're mark can be erased to covered without leaving a noticeable mark on the wall)

I was down there on my knees trying to get the whole tape measure against the wall with all the dirt and worms and he just stands up and extends a whole lot more and gets a number immediately.
@sinistrell
@sinistrell Жыл бұрын
I would find a spot on the wall, or mark it very lightly with something like a pencil or a wet finger (dries up again), and measure from there in either direction to split the height. For example, measure the bottom of the no smoking sign to the floor, and measure the bottom of the no smoking sign to the ceiling, then add those up. Saves me from reading a tiny number 9ft up and avoids the metal tape folding 👌🏻
@LRM12o8

I'd put a fully extended folding rule right up against the ceiling and place a finger on the wall where the folding rule ends, slide the rule down the rest of the way, read the distance from the floor to my finger and add 2 meters (the standard length of a folding rule) to that number.

I always measure down to a certain point where I can easily see and make a very light mark with a pencil, maybe 3-4 feet down, then I measure from the floor up to that mark and add the two together. That’s especially helpful when you need a precise measurement and don’t want to guess where the tape is folding since it doesn’t fold in a perfect 90° way but in a curve where it’s hard to tell what 16th it lands on.
@1393wsc

For accurate measurements, start from the ceiling as he showed in the first time and mark 1 meter on the wall (if your celing is higher, mark 1.5 or 2), then start from the floor, measure to that 1 meter mark. Your wall is whatever the second measure plus 1 meter high.

If you cant see the reading at the top of the tape, you can use the tape and a bit of math to get close. Pick a point where the tape is "doubled" and note the reading on the "up" and "down" side (down side being the side returning from the roof to the inside of the tape measure). Subtract the "up" number from the "down" number and divide it by 2, then add the "up" number. That's your roof height
@LRM12o8
@LRM12o8 Жыл бұрын
That's why using a folding rule is better, as long as it can reach the ceiling. Just put your finger on the wall where the rule ends and then slide it down to the floor. Your ceiling height is the distance from the floor to your finger plus 2 meters. Easy AF! You can measure your arm's reach plus 2 meters that way and that's probably all the height you'll ever need for domestic applications. For non-domestic applications, a laser (or was it infrared) measuring device quickly pays off.

I recently was working on a project with a retired professional drywall installed and noticed that when he measured things with the tape measure (even shorter things) he did this bend method to handle the tape. I took note and when I was working on a carpentry project (building a large custom desk that had to fit in an awkward shaped space with custom angles) I exclusively used the tape measure like this when measuring the room and even marking my cuts… it is absolutely the right way to use a tape measure and I can’t believe just never knew how to measure…

@@rabbit3212010 folding rules are 2 meters long, which is enough to easily measure ceiling heights of up to 4 meters*: Measure from the ceiling down (putting the 2m/6ft mark against the ceiling, so the 0 mark floats at the bottom), then place one finger on the wall where the folding rule ends and slide the rule down till it reaches the floor. The number your finger points to plus 2 meters equals your ceiling height. *you can measure greater ceiling heights with that method too, but that requires a ladder to reach the ceiling and a second person on another ladder to hold the rule steady while you climb down your ladder. 😅

x = actual height y = total tape length z = leftover length x = y+z/2 So if the measuring tape (all of it) reads 160 cm and when you put it with the left over tape and it intersect with 40 cm. Then the actual height is roughly (160+40)/2 = 100. I say roughly because there would be some slacks and bending in your measurements.

Ive never done this, but I assume you could also hold the two lengths of tape next to eachother, pick a reference point, then add the reference point and divide by two to find the middle (the top) of the length of tape. So, if the you hold the two lengths of tape measure together, and pick 5' as the reference point that aligns with the 15' mark on the other, you can add the two (20') and divide by two (10') to find the height of the ceiling (10').

Pro-Pro Tip: your tape measure is marked with the tape holder’s full length, so you just have to place the holder on the ground and pull the tape up to the height you want to measure. Just add the tape holder’s length to whatever the tape reads (usually 3”). Now you don’t have to fuss around with folding the tape or holding the end at the bottom.
