I would also add using those little laundry bags in your washer for lingerie, socks, and swimwear. They’re a must. Taking care of your clothes is rewarding. Reading and following care labels is also important. An avid thrifter, I love to rescue an item. Because of the item’s care when it’s mine, it’s rejuvenated and often looks new.

We must be soul sisters. I love to iron. It brings me joy. When I am feeling stressed that I am not getting enough done at my remote job, I will stand up and iron a couple of pieces and suddenly I have accomplished something, I did not have to think about it. I use "sizing" on my clothes. I do not put ANYTHING in the dryer that has elastic. The heat cooks the effectiveness out of anything with elastic. Thx, Kay!

Ironed clothes look and feel amazing...it's obvious that most don't iron. Especially in the United States I noticed, their clothes, no matter how pretty and expensive, are usually sloppy looking and wrinkled!

I also love to iron, I find it relaxing, and there is a sense of accomplishment once you are done. Having a rolling rack is also great for hanging up clothes to dry, I find it especially useful for dresses and other larger items that would not work well on a drying rack. Thanks for this video, something a little different than usual.

I have told people many times how much I love to iron. It makes me feel peaceful watching the clothes become wrinkle free and polished. I haven’t used the shoe accessory but I still polish shoes on occasion. My Dad passed away at 102 two years ago and I remember him polishing everyone’s shoes on Saturday night for Sunday church attendance. I have all the other tools you mentioned and use them regularly.

My mom taught me to iron when I was a child. I used to burn myself on the hot iron all the time, and she would put butter on it. I love the iron. It’s funny, but I do all those things you mentioned the steamer the iron. The tide the polishing of the shoes. You just need to take the time to love your things.

Several months ago I used my cloth tape measure to measure the rise, length and leg opening width of all my jeans. I then entered this info into the notes of my phone along with a description of each pair of jeans identifying the brand and size. Now when I'm shopping online, I can easily get a feel for whether or not the jeans I'm interested in would be too long, too low of rise, etc. I also grew up doing all the ironing for my family. I still iron some things, but have been considering getting a steamer - seems like it would work better on quite a few items.

I have always liked ironing. I always want to look polished and ironing makes a big difference. I think because I sew that also I iron because it’s a big part of clothing construction to not have that made at home look. When we first got married, a man who worked with my husband who was older came to our home one day and had to change into casual clothing. He had a flannel shirt and jeans on a hanger and they looked so nice and polished and pressed that I knew I always wanted Jim and myself to look that way. It was a game changer for sure.

When I was a little girl my dad would always shine his shoes. He taught me how to do it and I still do it today. One thing my dad taught me is that when shoes start looking really old and shining doesn't help that much, to buy shoe dye. Apply it just like you do polish. Then apply your polish over at once it's well dry. Makes them look like new I have gotten to where I take my dress pants to the cleaners. They do a better job pressing in the crease and I can wear the pants three or four times before they need to be taken in again. My grandmother taught me that when we come home from church to always damping and old rag and wiper shoes down and then put them back into the box.. I still do that today... Sometimes...Love your videos Kay!!

Another hack I have learned over time re ironing: air the freshly ironed piece in an open space, such as a shower curtain rod, for a day or two to let the moisture really evaporate. Your garment will then hold the pressing much better. Many people iron something and then immediately put it on. It will re-wrinkle again very quickly if you do so. Don't immediately put it back in a crowded closet or rack either - same effect. This technique really keeps your clothes looking their best (and you!) much longer.

Another item I would add to your list is shoe trees. I keep sturdy shoe trees in most of my shoes. It helps your shoes to stay new looking and helps prevents the bends and creases you see in shoes that you have been wearing a while. I even have them in my husband’s dress shoes.

I was really interested in your drying your clothes on the rack! I moved from Toronto, where I had washer and dryer, to Brittany, France, where I no longer have a dryer, and I have to go outside to get to my washer! I dry everything on my clothes rack, indoors in the winter, and outdoors when it's not raining (like today!). It may take a while for jeans and sheets and towels to dry, but they do last. It's also a lot less electricity!

Hi Kay, These are great tips for organizing our wardrobes-I was surprised how many I already use. I have a handheld Conair steamer and I love it; comes with a pants creaser that actually works. I have a rolling rack which is kept in the garage and I use it to steam and hang clothes. Always use a drying rack, no dryer for my clothes! I have a Conair pilling, fiuzz remover that I bought at Target and keep in laundry room with lint roller. I need to get a Tide stick; use OxyClean stain remover spray a lot! Thanks Kay for all your help to keep us looking the best we can!

As usual, you have provided a wealth of useful information, that really boils down to taking care of one's clothing - pure and simple. As seamstresses, both my adult daughter and I are sticklers for using an iron. My daughter and I were trained to "press as you go" when sewing, but that habit naturally extended to ironing our clothes, as well. And God bless my mom for being way ahead of things by teaching me the proper way to press clothes early on. The steamer and the Gleaner, too, are priceless tools for anyone wanting to truly be polished and put together. This post was a wonderful delight! Thank you!

I just purchased this beautiful white silk Sezanne blouse, and wouldn't you know it, Friday when I was out to dinner, some shrimp stuffing fell on my blouse (first time I wore it). Well, naturally I was horrified. When I got home, I put some Tide eraser stick on my blouse stain and hung it up on a rack (I also have racks) and the next day it was gone. I was thinking about sending it to the dry cleaners but after looking at the care directions, I decided to try to "hand wash" in my washing machine on Delicates. I hung it up in my 3-season porch and today, I used my steamer to steam out the wrinkles. OMG, it came out beautifully. So, I didn't need to spend money on the dry cleaners, and I didn't ruin my blouse. Also, I grew up with a full-length mirror and like you when I got married, I kept forgetting to get one. But a few years ago, I finally ordered one from Targets and I have been happy with it ever since. I do own those sticky rollers too and I always use them on my black clothing before I go out. For some reason black gets awfully linty. I have a battery pill remover, but be careful, I accidently cut the collar and ruined my top (from Chico's so not cheap). I will try the one you showed us. Thank you for that advise. I do use an iron and I not only polish my shoes, I brush them when I get home and air them out before putting them away. I also treat my boots and booties before Winter. The Kiwi products are easy to use, I have that easy polish sponge in several colors. I remember my father polishing his shoes on the weekends too. I used to have a rolling rack to plan my outfits, but it must have broken because I do not have it anymore. It is something I miss having. But since I am retired, I figured I really do not need one. But I may replace it one of these days now that you mention it. Good tips and I spend a fair amount of time taking care of my clothing, weeding out old stuff and checking my shoes for wear. Thank you, Kay.

Yes, that's what I put in my dryer, too. My mom also taught me to iron. Maybe that's why a lot of people don't like to iron. If you don't really learn how to get the wrinkles out you could actually get more wrinkles in. Ha! I know a lot of people struggle with the sleeves and collar, too.

Hi Kay, I really appreciated your video today. It really underscores one of your key suggestions, to invest in quality pieces that will last through fads and trends. And they last because of the quality and the ways we take care of these classics--through ironing, steaming, de-pilling, not putting in the dryer, etc. Also your list of tools is also a perfect antidote to fast-fashion. Taking care of these investment pieces that we will wear for years respects the environment through respecting those long-lasting items that we wear for many years. Thank you.

I only use my dryer to fluff up the laundry right after it comes out of the washing machine. It takes out a lot of wrinkles. Then after the laundry has been hung up and dried, I put it back in the dryer on air setting. Has worked great for me!! Fluffy towels with less lint and clothes with less wrinkles.

Wardrobe maintenance is critical to look good. I iron all my woven fabric items, and mostly, steam my knits. We took the portion of the garage with the laundry machines and made it into a “laundry room” and I have everything I need there: my iron and board, always up, full-size steamer, clothesline and drying rack, shoe care things, and my sewing machine in a tiny room adjacent. I make sure everything in my closet is ready to wear, in advance, and just leave anything that needs attention in my laundry room. It makes getting dressed so much easier and more fun. Plus, freshly ironed/steamed clothes wrinkle like mad if worn damp, they should air and dry first. People always say “but I hate to iron!” I used to think this, then I realized what I really hated was getting so hot doing it, so I added a big fan. It also cuts drying time in half! I don’t put any of my clothes in the dryer and they look new for ages.

These are great tips, Kay. I hardly use the dryer for my clothes. My husband does the ironing. I am so grateful for that. I use my steamer mostly for touch-ups. I try not to buy clothes that need to be dry cleaned, but some of my wools need that service. I plan to hand wash my cashmere, so I recently purchased a folding sweater dryer by OXO. Haven't used it yet, but I plan to.

I handwashing's all of my knits now. I researched the best liquid soaps. I find that dry cleaning really dries out fine fabrics, whereas hand-washing leaves them soft and lovely.

These are all great tips and I do all of them except I’ve not heard of the Gleamer but sounds interesting! I don’t have space for a rolling rack but I do use a collapsible over the door rack that can hold 4-5 days of clothes and then folds flat when not in use. I too air dry 95% of my clothes.

I have a stand up mirror in my guest room too. I wanted it in mine. But couldn’t find a space for it. I found an old lint brush. I use it a lot. I have some lint rollers. But I have no idea where I put them. Maybe when I clean out my laundry room I will find them. I’ve never heard of a Gleaner. I use my steamer, I don’t think my old ironing board made the move. But I may buy one just to have it. We don’t dress up that much. But when my husband worked I used to have to iron his uniform occasionally. I have a hanging drying rack on the wall in my laundry room. That was there before I found a washer and a dryer. I think my husband still has a shoe polish kit. He used to have his shoes polished too. If he doesn’t we will get one. I have some black heels. I would love to have a rolling rack. Just to make some extra room in my closet. My clothes are crammed in there. I clean it out, and it gets filled right back up. I really need to move so we have an office for me. Then I could workout in it too. Our office is just a junk room of my husband’s things. All his treasures.

I too used to iron for my family growing up and I like to have nice polished looking clothes. I have been thinking about getting a steamer for a year now but have never really made up my mind on which one I should purchase. Still trying to decide which one to buy. I used to have a rolling rack too and got rid of it when I moved 6 years ago. Wish I would have kept it and have been toying with the idea of purchasing another one. I have a full-length mirror downstairs and it makes a difference. Need one upstairs too.

Thanks for sharing Sherry. I think you’ll love a steamer if you get one. I originally purchased mine to refresh my seasonal clothes when I take them out of storage each year. They don’t really need to be ironed usually, but a good steaming gets the wrinkles out and just freshens the garment up a bit.

I have also been told that steaming releases smells and stains, whereas ironing can bake them in.

I love to iron. It find it very soothing. In terms of using a drying rack though, when I do I find it makes my clothes feels stiff which I don’t get when they’ve been dried in the dryer. Any suggestions for that? Is that normal for others?
@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms
@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms 25 күн бұрын
I find that they feel stiff if I dry them outside on a line. But when I dry them inside on the rack, not so much. And generally if my jeans feel a little stiff, just folding them and pressing them out with my hands and then putting them away, they seem to soften up a bit.

How do you recommend getting wrinkles out of Tencel fabric or Lyocell fabric? I have tried travel (or smaller steamers) and they don't seem to work. I don't want to get a big stand up steamer.
@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms
@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms 25 күн бұрын
I don't know that I have a lot of recent experience with that. I tend to not like Tencel a whole lot, so I rarely buy it. I think some of those pieces probably say you can use a cooler iron. My iron has settings on it for the different fabrics, which is very helpful. I use those and they generally work.

I do not understand the aversion to ironing and enjoy watching KZbin fashion videos while I do it! my mother ironed sheets, I am not doing that… 😅 A drying rack is essential as is a steamer. Thanks for the reminders.

I learned how to iron as a child by ironing pillow cases and sheets. As a seamstress, I learned to press clothing during all stages of construction. Don’t do sheets any more, but clothes? Absolutely!

Ha ha! We had an old fashioned roller press, wickedly hot int the summer. The maid suffered over that. Having said that, ironed bed sheets are really quite decadently wonderful. This was, of course, before permanent press. Easy care, but not quite as luscious.

Add me to the chorus of "I love to iron!" I also like to binge watch DVDs or videos while I do, and the steam is like a mini-facial! About the only things I don't iron are dish towels, bath towels, sheets, jeans, cotton socks, and underwear. I also use a drying rack for anything in 100% cotton, underwear, active wear, wool or wool blend socks, t-shirts, and shirts/blouses (which often eliminates the need to iron them!). It goes without saying that wool is handled differently, either professionally cleaned or hand-washed.

I hate to iron, which probably stems from the fact that starting from the age of 12, it was my job to iron all of the household clothes. My mom would take clothes wrinkle-free from the dryer, sprinkle them with water, and stuff them into a cloth bag so that they would be full of creases. Then I would have to spend all day Saturday ironing, plus all of the dusting (including her many knicknacks). It ruined my weekends for all of my teenage years. I had almost no social life.

Creases in linen pants, to crease or not to crease????? I just pressed a couple of new linen pants and I stood there for a moment or two debating whether to crease or not. Please let me know your opinion.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I think if it's a wide leg dress trouser I usually do. If it's an elasticized waistband Eileen Fisher casual pant I don't.

@@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms True, and I think most linen stays nicer longer if shaped with the fingers when wet. I rarely iron linen, as I feel it damages the fabric. For unstructured pieces, I wear just once, then soak in the bathtub overnight with a good product. In the morning, just rinse, shape with fingers and preferably dry in the fresh breeze outside. Magic. I like the textured finish.

Good cashmere shouldn't pill - unfortunately, even the most expensive cashmere is of inferior quality these days and therefore does pill - sad. I love to iron too - and pressed clothes look so much better. Steamers are good, but you have to empty them in between uses otherwise you can get rusty or mineral spots on your clothes. Shoe polishing used to be a Sunday night thing! I still have a kit with different brushes and colors of polish. Hoping we get some Summer weather here in Massachusetts so we can wear sandals - hasn't been warm enough yet. Lint rollers are good in a pinch, but they do leave a residue on clothes which actually attracts lint - so you are better off with a clothes brush. I have two hanging racks in the basement next to the washer, with retractable arms, where I hang almost everything of mine. Hanging does mean that more needs to be ironed (the dryer does eliminate wrinkles) which is also hard on clothes - lesser of two evils really!
