Most club players would play at least 2 rounds of diamonds and noting West is void take comfort from vacant places that West is more likely to hold longer clubs than East before taking the deep finesse. In the 1980s I played a poor 6nt contract which only made on the lead of the fourth highest of the longest suit. Ever since I have said when the declarer has say 32 points plus why advertise a significant attribute of your defensive hand to him or her as well. Jack says play passive. Absolutely unless you have gleaned some information from the bidding.

"no point in covering the 9 of clubs". What a fatuous comment! You know that covering the 9 with the 10 cannot gain, but the defence do not know that. By not covering, you tell opps that you do not have a low card that could be promoted, so they can count you for exactly 3 spades (AKQ). At least the declarer has the chance to go wrong if E plays the 10 (for example, dec could lose a club to the 10 after the finesse of the 9, then play for a squeeze on an opp holding 4 hearts and KQ of clubs , or any 4+ clubs). That line of play is any event better than declarer's line (which does not cover, for example, the play on the actual lie of the cards if W goes in with CK on the first lead of that suit, as he probably should).

I think he was speaking from the perspective of the opponents. No point covering partner's 9 with the J because you can see the 10 in dummy.
