9:57 Most people have never seen what the real middle of nowhere looks like. That's it right there. When I first started trucking, I'd be freaked tf out in the mornings when I started driving, because half the time I'd be driving off into that. I'm an East Coaster, born and raised. That Mississippi overcast night, where there's nobody and nothing for miles, but no natural light like you get even out in the desert or the plains, is something you can't replicate and most people have never seen. Also, that reminds me, I should send this man some pics of some of the underground deliveries I've made out in the Ozarks. Those places are beyond liminal spaces.

My mom (late 70s-80s kid) described malls as "the social media before social media" which actually makes sense. I even remember a time when introverts would be at the mall because thats where everything/everyone was at. The mall where I live is now just a weird ass restaurant center. No more FYE, book stores, none of that. Its all different food stands and shit now. Makes walking in there a nightmare; that many scents at once gives me a migraine.

Growing up, my mom, who passed recently so I appreciate the good memories, did management and marketing for shopping centers, and was based out of our local mall, so I spent a lot of time in malls after hours riding bikes, playing on the Xmas/santa set, always got to use the service hallways, etc. It was the coolest thing ever as a kid in the 90s. And crowded malls are what usually reliably get me in the holiday spirit; it sucks in a way that era is mostly gone, but that’s how things go, good or bad.

Thing with liminal space' definition and this also counts for other terms that become more popular, the definition broadens until it doesn't really mean anything except empty space and no people. A liminal space is always transitional, this could mean that it's a space you literally need to cross to get to a non liminal space. Or a building that's empty because it's under renovation, which is also a kind of transition. Lot's of these photo's just aren't liminal. Creepy? off? sure but not exactly liminal.

0:07 Liminal space definitions are definently very janky, I think Polygon Donut described it best, something about how Liminal Spaces are often nostalgic, dream-like spaces that feel like an old photo from your childhood, they can be nightmarish or comforting, where you have this whole space alone to yourself that doesn't even feel real, like a gem you stumbled upon. Something adjacent to that I slightly forgot but anywho probably my favourite genre of images.
