In this video I look at the battery pack data feed in a Hyundai Ioniq Electric 28kWh, using an Autel scanner and reading the live data from the BMS (battery management system). Nothing too technical. Its just to show you what the battery reports to aid any diagnostics. But this car has now done 80,300 miles, so we can also see how much the battery has degraded and look at the current state of health.

Nice to see SOC after so many miles. One correction, the battery is not liquid cooled it is air-cooled that just makes your figures even more impressive

80,000 miles divided by range 124 miles equals 645 charge cycles. I would say thats just over a quarter of the way to 2000 cycles to 80% SOH. So about 3 times further still to go to 210,000 !!!

This kind of a degradation test is totaly unrealistic. There is no electric car with 80000 miles and no degradation. My wife have a faulty battery on Kona. Before battery replacement, she have only 70,5% available energy left, but SOH was still showing 100%

A German User got already roundabout 100.000 Miles on his ioniq Classic already last year. SOH still 100%. But he showed me his calculated real dregadation based on that what he charged from 1 to 100% nearly new (100 km) and last summer at equal climate conditions. He got a real degradation down to 84% with his SOH 100%. So SOH in ioniq classic doesn't Show real degradation.

Excellent video. Thanks for posting. This makes me feel much better about swapping my LEAF for the Ioniq earlier this year. I think it's one of the best EV's for the money.

The MG ZS EV is the best value, but the Ioniq is more affordable as they are older and cheaper.

Excellent news on your Ioniq's battery health - incredible considering the mileage covered. Hoping to get an Ioniq 5 as my first EV after running an Ioniq hybrid for the last 4 years. Thanks for the video.

This is particularly good news because the 28kWh battery charges faster than the later version. Being a smaller pack it probably got fast charged more often than a large battery would over the same mileage because a larger pack might well cover more trips without fast DC charging along the way.
@ursodermatt8809

well yes, the whole battery pack gets charged faster in the 28kwh version. but not necessarily the cells. the 38kwh has a different cell figuration,

I have found that the SoC reported by the can bus is slightly less than that reported on the head unit of the car, and this is potentially one way to calculate the actual degradation of the battery. The battery inlet temperature is basically the cabin temperature. The inlet to cool the battery pack is under the rear passenger seats in the middle.
@TecSanento
@TecSanento 7 ай бұрын
Nope, there is always a constant (5%) I think underreporting of bms soc vs head unit soc - that's the reserve Hyundai build in so recuperation always works AND you stress the battery way less by only charging 95%

i am happy since i have a 2018 ioniq with now 10k on it. it did not say how much ac or dc charging was done what the split of how it was charged. but there is less effect on battery health over a leaf due to having a battery management system

Good video Matt. Amazing SOH considering the number of miles it has done. What a piece of kit that Hyundai is. Also good to see the scan tool you are using. Might get one of those but I suspect my mechanic friend may borrow it from me.

SOH only shows how well balanced the pack is, not how much degredation it has.
@davidbarr5783
@davidbarr5783 3 жыл бұрын
@@jor7137 I believe your mistaken. Car manufacturers appear to be using SOH as a measure of battery capacity in warranty claims. And in the four years of driving BEVs this appears to be the measure that a lot of owners use as well. The cell voltages will give a better clue of balancing than SOH.

The SoC from the can bus is reporting the charge of the full 30.5kWh battery pack, where as the SoC on the head unit is the percentage of the usabled 28kWh. The difference being around 8%. On a 4 year old Ioniq, the difference will probably be around 5%

But I'm reading SoH from the BMS, not SoC.

That measure it’s not real, a better way to know the degradation of battery it’s doing a simple test. How many miles did the car on a full charg went it was new? And how many miles do it now? Comparing datas you can figure it out degradation of the battery. For the miles show your car 49 miles left and 41% of battery remaining, I think your car have a 5% of degradation of the pack of batteries. That it’s awesome by the way 👍🏼
@edsgarage001
@edsgarage001 2 жыл бұрын
No, that doesn't work. The range till empty is literally a calculated *estimate* and it's never exact. You cannot determine the battery capacity or level of degradation by the range, or how far it'll drive, as there's about a thousand factors that can affect the overall range. You can however do a consumption test to see how many kw are used from 100 to 0 percent, and then fully charge it to see how many kw you can shove back into the battery.
@ursodermatt8809
@ursodermatt8809 3 жыл бұрын

No, a read out of some SOH (state of health, what does that mean anyway?) line spit out by the manifacturers own data feed does not prove anything. You better just do an empirical driving range test and compare figures of miles driven per charge as measured by the charging station. 😉

How did you use/charge the car? This is impressive - I’m about to buy a Kia EV6, which, of course is based on the next generation of this technology (same platform as the Ionic 5), but would love to think I could get that to still have 100% battery health in 4 years time! Any tips would be appreciated!

Some spend too much effort trying to care for the battery. It really doesn't make too much difference, well not or hardly measurable. The only thing you need to try to not do is leave the car at 100% for long periods of time. Try not to do that too often and do anything else you like. Also see kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2Szdpufm9t1d68

@@GoGreenAutos what, you mean don’t leave it plugged in and charged to 100%, or don’t charge it to 100% at all? Thanks for the info - and your other video with the gold car is how I found you. 😊
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 2 жыл бұрын
@@anthrodgers1527 Yes fine to charge to 100% if you're going to use it the next day. But if the car is going to be sat unused for a long period of time, like a 3+ days (no set rules on this), try to not charge it to 100%. Its best to leave the battery between 20-80% for long periods, such as when on holiday. Try to do this if you can and that's about it. Don't worry about anything else as it will be little or no difference.
