Looking for George Michael's un-marked grave in 2020

For anyone looking for George Michael's grave sight, I want to let you know that it is there. His tombstone doesn't have George Michaels on it. It has his birth name Georgios Kiriakas Panayiotou on it. He is buried next to his mom Leslie and his sister Melanie. I hope this helps those of you looking for his gravesite.

It's amazing how someone I never met could affect me so much. I adored George Michael. His death shocked and saddened me I think more than anyone. I did have the privilege of seeing him in concert. I grew up with him and his great music. He was a big part of my youth. You said his dead saddened you more than anyone. I suffer from severe depression since 5 years. On Christmas day i woke up and turned on the radio. The very first words i've heard: George Michael was only 53 years old............! I only thought no, no, no! not him, please not him! I cried one week or more i couldn't even say. And lay in bed 3 days. Maybe because of my depression i'm unable to hear "Last Christmas" ever since and i loved it so much! Exactly 3 years later his beloved sister Melanie died on Christmas day, too! RIP George 🥀 and RIP Melanie! 🥀 Together again............. with his/her mum!

Thank you for your video which helped me in advance of my visit this weekend. Right now the cemetery is allowing visitors without a guided tour so I took the opportunity to visit this incredibly unique place. I was not prepared for how atmospheric, peaceful and utterly beautiful it is. I spent hours just wandering and taking photos. There are some very unique, artful headstones nestled in the glades and the sound of birdlife was just enchanting. I was able to spend several minutes sitting on the bench right in front of George Michael's grave. I thought about him, his music and what it meant for me as an 80s teenager stuck in a boarding school. I have always been a fan but I never thought to visit Highgate until now. Far from being an obsessive, I just paid my respects quietly in this wonderful place. I have to say, that in the entire cemetery, the family chose the most wonderful spot for their Mum. High up and at the end of a tranquil path, It is bathed in sunlight and adorned with ivy and flowers, white roses marked George's grave. I felt sad that there is no headstone but on the other hand, you know he is there and you can just sit and contemplate what is, in reality, a private family grave. Maybe one day they will carve his and his sister's name into the tablet. I too lost a brother so while I am a huge fan of George and his music, I totally understand that he is mourned as a much loved family member, lost forever, and that takes priority. He is resting in a very beautiful and safe place, a perfect place for a man of such titanic class and talent. He will be remembered forever.

@@jr9249Right now is the perfect time to do what they are calling a self guided tour. George Michael's grave is accessible this way but who knows how long for. Numbers are limited and to be honest, everyone is very respectful so it is very tranquil. I felt very privileged to have had the opportunity to pay my respects to someone whose talent kept me company during a lonely time in my life (boarding school). I am not a fanatic. He was a human being and I respect him as a much loved member of his family. I am planning to visit again to see the cemetery in a different season. I would like to do the tour one day as well, so that I can learn more about this unique and beautiful place

I live five minutes away and George lived up the road from me in Highgate Village...he was adored by us neighbours and we found out only AFTER his death, that our Christmas tree and Highgate High Street decorations had been paid for anonymously each year, by, wait for it...Mr. George Michael!! But that's only one of many anonymous donations that he made, that became known only in the days after his death...the IVF donation of £8,000 to a couple trying to conceive, that he'd seen on daytime telly, is my favourite...he adored daytime telly and would often phone in to a live show (Loose Women was his favourite) and have a chat with the presenter... following up the next day, with a Fortnum's hamper for the girls, thanking them for letting him be on!! A truly beautiful man, in body and soul.

The only people who knew who the donor was, were the This Morning producer, and a couple of other people, certainly less than five...George had stipulated that the couple concerned must NOT learn who the donor was...the producers told them that it was an anonymous businessman...so how could they have named the baby after George?

I went here, on my trip to London, knowing I couldn’t see George Michaels plot, but to be in the same area. My god, this must be the most beautiful cemetery in the entire world. So lush and green! The most beautiful tombs and monuments, the memories of these lives passed. I will go back again some day. Ah, the stories! @@krisushi1, you are so right, I do agree that he should have a beautiful head-stone with a beautiful inscription. I have no idea who is taken over the care of his estate now that Melanie is gone. I feel that she was the one that was very solid and sensible and knew 100% her brothers wishes. It’ll be interesting to see what happens going forward. Who ever is in charge whether it be one person or a group I hope they realize how George was loved the world over and how his fans cherish his music and want to honor and acknowledge the gift that he gave.

@@rosemiller2990 The members of George's immediate family are his sister Yioda and his elderly father. Apparently Yioda, who I think was the eldest sister, has sold Mill Cottage which George had left her, which was where George passed. That was quite a surprise as I never thought she would sell it. I always thought that George had the best times at that property. There is quite a bit of depression in George's family which showed with both sisters but more so Melanie when he passed. The song he wrote 'My Mother Had A Brother' is a true story of his uncle taking his own life due to being gay. Just like George, his sister's also felt things very deeply as well. Melanie had let herself go healthwise and had several health issues which may have been left unattended as she became a recluse and refused to leave the mansion he left her in London. She even had her food delivered and didn't see anyone. She suffered a type of Diabetes, amongst other issues, which is listed as the cause of death although the coroner is still to finish his findings. She went into a Diabetic Coma and was found on Christmas evening by her sister Yioda who went to check on her. There was no suspicious circumstances involved. Many say that she died of a broken heart but passing on Christmas Day makes it very suspicious as to how she really passed. Maybe she couldn't cope any longer and stopped taking medication which caused the coma? We'll never really know the truth, just like the bizarre circumstances about George's passing. Anyway, I won't go making assumptions but would it really hurt to have George's name on his headstone with the words he had constantly stated? I read an article recently that stated that George's name will never be added to the headstone. That's just cruel and doesn't even make sense. The location of the family plot is public record and can be accessed around the world. In four years there has been no vandalism nor hoards of tourists so what's the concern? There are many other very famous people buried there too who don't get the treatment that George does. I'm sure he would be shocked at the inconvenience that his gravesite has caused. It's awfully unfair on those who want to visit their own loved ones but can't because of this special schedule to prevent too many from seeing George's grave. I just believe that this great and brilliantly talented man deserves to have his name on his headstone and the words he wanted. We can still live in hope.🤞🇦🇺

@@alameas6358 Every admirer of George, who is playing in the background, would know where it is from the endless photos. It's also a matter of public record. I'm at the other end of the earth in Australia and I know what it looks like and where it is positioned. I just have a very strong opinion that everyone, whether famous or not, is entitled to have their name on their final resting place. Security would be pretty tight around it or the family wouldn't have felt that they didn't need a guard placed there permanently anymore. As Australia is a considerable time zone ahead of Europe and the US, we got the news on Boxing Day so that's when I commemorate his loss while playing his music which I'm doing right now. It just hurts that someone who has given us so much hasn't even the dignity of his name on his grave. He's actually buried in the family plot where his mother Leslie is and also his sister Melanie who died last year on Christmas Day in the UK. Both their graves are marked so it's not a big stretch to know George's. For anyone, I feel this is so wrong. We all deserve to have our name, the one thing that we completely owned, on our grave or memorial. Even if it was his birth name but to leave it blank is so completely wrong. I don't think that it would cause a rush of people to flock to it as those who would want to see it would already know where it is. Today, I just plan on relaxing with a nice cool drink and be serenaded by George. Merry Christmas for you today, ours is over for another year.

I saw this picture yesterday, but I could hardly believe my eyes that after 5 years and so much fighting, we managed to get George to finally get the one head. What an absolutely beautiful cemetery! I love how it’s completely blanketed in trees..moss, vines, wild flowers. The lush foliage being allowed to grow freely created a beauty only nature could imagine. It looks like it was tucked into a forest centuries ago and lay hidden from all, but time. Eerily Beautiful.

I could spend an entire day walking through this beautiful cemetery and reading all of the graves. I actually find these places very peaceful and tranquil. I am assuming George's beloved sister would have also been laid to rest here? Jean Simmons's grave looks rather pitiful, no flowers, as for Hoskin's I never knew he had died. Thank you for showing us this. It is such a beautiful cemetery. Every year on Christmas Day I check to see if there are remembrance stories about him. I was so shocked and sad for months over George Michael's death. He was one of the very rare, genuine talents of the music industry. He did it all and at such a young age. Kissing a Fool...truly brilliant...he was young when he wrote that. He left us so many amazing song to cherish. That spot where he is buried conveys such tranquility and calm.

Thank you for this video, you made me cry because George Michael was my Hero, his music is what kept me alive and he changed my life, to never give up on my dreams..I saw him on his last world concert and last performance of his life. The world Tour really took a toll on him, he is grately missed. That was not what I expected a cemetery to look like. It seems so peaceful and serene. It's not hard to find George's grave, all you do is look up his mother and sister whose graves are both marked and they will be on a map of the cemetery. All cemeteries are mapped, especially more modern ones. There was a guard placed at it initially but removed after a few years. The family didn't want it to become like the chaos outside of his house. I would never have thought you were walking around one of the busiest cities in the world.

@@jr9249 He is buried at Highgate Cemetery in North London. Enter through into the West Cemetery. There are many pictures of his grave which sits between his mother Lesley and on the other side is his sister Melanie whose graves supposedly both marked. Unfortunately, George's isn't which makes me very sad. The plot sits on or near a corner. If you watch the video again, it's shown at 03:16. It's public record, so you can contact the cemetery or relevant authorities to find the exact location before you arrive. It's a public cemetery so you'll have no trouble seeing it and a chair is placed opposite. I'm sorry I can't help further as I'm quite ill at present. Hope all goes well and you get to pay your respects. I wish I could help more but simply do not have the strength. Research as much as you can on the internet before going. @@jr9249 No. They only wanted to deter fans from turning it into a tacky shrine. This is a public cemetery after all, so the public has every right to be there. The cemetery already has guards present but George's family were just being extra cautious. It turned out that there was no need for this guard and was removed. The cemetery will have opening and closing hours so check for these prior to going. There are many other famous and interesting people buried there and you may want to spend some extra time wandering around.

I also had the pleasure of visiting George Michaels grave 4 months ago. Because of covid restrictions there was no guide that day so we had the free run of the cemetery. Was absolutely amazing day. I did take pictures but id never post them online as its his families request x

Pleases my heart to see him surrounded by beautiful flowers, and with his Mother which is the way he wanted it and by all means should be. But my heart breaks to know hes gone....what a talent and loved by so many!! This makes it so real to see that picture knowing he is right there. OMG George Michael, l want to go back when things were normal and you were here with us. Rest in peace sweet man until we see you again. And this cemetery is so beautiful and peaceful and so real!! What a giant talent George Micheal was, his gravesite so peaceful, the American cemeteries so spread out , just lawn and the marker’s really, this cemetery in England almost reminded me of being in a church , the tombstones so beautiful , if your can call a cemetery beautiful this one is, breathtaking , the lush gardens, foliage beauty everywhere , RIP George you gave so much, you rest with the angels now.

Ok where the heck have I been hiding...I didnt know Bob Hoskins had died. Jean Simmons a lovely actress with such a simple sombre grave. The passing of George Michael was one of the saddest deaths along with Victoria Wood....so much talent gone and some way to young. May everyone there rest in eternal peace 🙏

Honestly Jean Simmons grave is simple and tasteful and not sombre. It is in a pleasant spot and whilst there a gentleman placed a single red rose on the grave. She's not forgotten

I was so saddened when I saw the news that George had passed he had such a troubled last few years he was trying to get over his problems I think they just got the better of him, he truly was a great artist he was a few months older than me too, I followed his music from the day he came into the music industry with Andrew Ridgeley, Wham was amazing I wish George still had time with us I believe he had so much more music to offer his fans he loved his music so much may he rest in beautiful peace🙏🏾🌹🌷🌹🌷

I went to this cemetery in 2017 but you couldn't visit the west part unless with a tour guide and it was somewhat rushed but extremely beautiful nonetheless. Would have loved to see George's grave but they had a sign up saying that wouldn't happen. Thank you for sharing, loved George💜

If it helps anyone, it is no longer unmarked and is accessible to the public approximately 100meters down the hill from the circle of Lebanon, it did cost us £10 each Saturday when we vlogged it recent tree damage from the storm the other week has made everything that little bit more spooky and enchanting.
