Absolutely. The image quality they managed to achieve with these displays is really impressive.

thank you for the unboxing... so i can see what it will look like... while waiting to get mine :D

You're welcome! I enjoyed making the video. I discovered some things with the unboxing that I didn't know about yet. I was really enjoying the anticipation, but actually seeing the holographic image in real life is something else.

Thank you! I'm happy to hear that. Are you getting a Portrait display as well?

Noooo!!!! How could you just cut that hollographic seal at the beginning? I would have spent hours trying to take it away neatly and keep it! Hahahahha. Nice video. Thank you.

Hahaha, sorry, I guess I couldn't wait to see the holograms on the display. Glad you like the video!

I can imagine. I hope you'll receive yours soon. It is a lot of fun to experiment with.

man I love it ....I can't wait fot the big ones with high resolution to get more common and affordable ...and by then cpus and gpus will be able to handle it even better

Absolutely! I wonder how much the price of larger models could be reduced by building them in a similar way to the Portrait, without the acrylic block.

thx for the review.. how high is the power consumtion?
@milanpolle2 жыл бұрын
Glad you like it! Not sure about the exact power consumption. There is a Raspberry Pi 4 built in for standalone mode and then you have the power consumption of the display on top of that (which shouldn't be a lot). Mine is getting all its power from the USB-C 3.1 connection of my PC.

As I understand the tech, you can't look over the model right? When you rotate your head 90 degrees to the screen(or put the screen landscape), the effect is gone yes?
@milanpolle3 жыл бұрын
Correct. It is a light field display, but only horizontally, so it is missing one dimension. Which is a smart trick to improve performance. Because you have to calculate 45 to 100 (horizontal) views per frame for the display's 1536 x 2048 pixels. LG sells larger displays, up to 8K in resolution, but they get really expensive. Another reason for the horizontal-only light field that Looking Glass Factory mentioned, is that you are much more likely to look around the object horizontally, which is a good point. And that it is of course also needed for the 3D depth effect. Indeed when you tilt your head the 3D effect doesn't work anymore, it would if the light field was vertical as well. The horizontal viewing range is also about 50 degrees total, beyond that the display turns black. Apart from not having to wear 3D glasses and being able to look around the object, a big advantage of it being a light field is also that the 3D effect stays correct when viewed from nearby to far away. They use the vertical resolution and even the sub pixels for extra horizontal light field ray resolution, which is pretty impressive.

Would you say the price is worht it? Im thinking about getting one too

For me it absolutely is. Seeing it in real life is much more impressive than in a video. I'm looking forward to be able to see the 3D models I make with Blender on it. My holographic Amiga Boing Ball demo, that I had been working on in Unity, worked on the first try yesterday. So it is pretty easy to add support for it with Unity. I have lots of ideas for applications that I want to make for it. Still need to try it with the Kinect and the Voxatron game as well. The amount of displays sold must be round 10.000 by now, so I'm expecting a lot of new interesting applications to come out for it.
