Ambergris is not whale poop it's whale vomit when they eat shellfish they can't digest the beaks so they spit it back up it ends up on Driftwood or something and then is on the Sea Foam and then it is turned into ambergris for perfume there's no way it's poop

I believe Ambergris is more like a pearl, where it's the secretions that a whale makes to coat undigestible irritants so that it can pass it. It's everything the whale couldn't digest and some kind of biological concrete that binds it all together. If you ever dissected an owl pellet as a kid, it's roughly the whale equivalent. Comes out of the whale all stinky and quite soft, I hear. Then it floats around and reacts with the sea water and sunlight and hardens up and oxidizes into compounds that are actually useful in perfumery. Ambroxan is one of the many many compounds that is found in natural Ambergris.

Great job, my favorite ambergris fragrances are Guerlain Encens Mythique and Creed Tabarome (original vintage version) unfortunately vaulted.

I'm going to be controversial but I think we get fed a lot of false information due to our naivety, for example talked into believing that a fecal smell proves the authenticity of Ambergris. I believe that the more fecal Ambergris is, the more lower grade it is. High grade Ambergris does not need to smell fecal (or have bad facets to it) at all. And the really good Ambergris can smell like a warm smooth ambroxan, but better and multidimensional. Same with Oud (although off topic). People in the Middle East tell me that "barnyard" oud is considered low quality there, and that good oud should not smell bad like that. To add another layer on controversy, I think most of this revolves around a dislike of "designer" fragrances, and if Ambergris or Oud smells too good in a designer fragrance, if mustn't be authentic.

I love Ambergris! I’ve struggled with Amber fragrances, don’t like Ambre Sultan and tried Ambre Nuit as an intro but it just smells powdery on me. I tried a sample of Ormond Jayne Tolu with a bunch of conifers and that one has been fine but wasn’t my favorite. I’ll have to try Grand Soir since everyone seems to like that one.

Grand Soir is Vanilla Amber and Tonka Bean: Sweet! With many niche frags you can tell the transitions from Top Heart base notes IMO GS it’s a linear scent, but sooo BEAUTIFUL!👍🏾 I have Amber Nuit. You can smell the rose amber and florals I have Ambre Russe and it liquor and a little smoke and they say leather also If you want the purest type of Amber Frag it would be GS....so yummy!

Great choice of scents. On the ambergris side I can also recommend Silence the Sea by Strangelove NYC. On the amber side Ambre Premier by Jovoy, Ambre Intense by Nicolai and NY Amber by Bond nr9.

I prefer amber accord fragrances over the ambergris ones. My favorite amber is Ambre Narguile by Hermes (Jean-Claude Helena). It's a beautiful gourmand, smoky, honey and boozy amber, very elegant and refined in Helena's minimalistic manner. The herbal touches (oregano and bay leaf) in Ambre Sultan prevent me to fully enjoy the amber accord.

Amber is very versatile. If I'm not mistaken, ancient amber often entraps insects from which dinosaur DNA is extracted to clone dinosaurs for Jurassic Park attractions. 🧬 Wonderful prices for amber jewelry with these inclusions is for sale in Poland. Then, of course, there is the fragrance accord.

Absolutely love the amber accord. Definitely must try the Serge Lutens. I'm trying to find it at a discount in some site... I enjoy Grand Soir and Gentle fluidity gold..., Montale's amber musk as well... I don't really enjoy "sex and the Sea"... I get a kind of gasoliney smell...

Hi Sebastian, thank you for a great content. I enjoy your educative videos. How can you tell if a perfume contains a real ambergris or if it has ambroxin? For example ambergris is listed in quite a few Tauer Perfumes and I do not find them animalic on me.. (wearing Les Annes today, maybe at one point during the day it was tiny tiny bit animalic, but now just sweet vanilla after 9 hours...)

A good way to know if it's ambergris vs ambroxan I would smell Escentric Molecules Molecule 02 or Juliette Has A gun Not A Perfume or even something like Dior Sauvage to learn what Ambroxan smells like. The Ambergris on the other had smells musky aquatic animalic. In the strongest doses otherwise it's a sexy compliment to any fragrance. :)

I like ambroxan better than ambergris because it lacks the animalic after scent. I don't like the animalic scent that ambergris leaves. It can be overpowering and take away from the fragrance as a whole.

It's common knowledge in perfumery. Labdanum, Vanilla and resins and sometimes ambergris are used to create the amber accord! :)
