Thank you Sebastian for such an excellent informative video on animalic notes. I simply adore animalic notes as they bring a dark mysterious sexy primal aura to fragrances, especially to leathers. They awaken our basic instincts which are still primal despite how much we evolved as a species. Thanks again 💼🐂🤎🐆🐅

I really like the educational direction your channel is taking! Marvelous. Lactoscatone is another synth that is used to reproduce the note of civet. A correction: castoreum isn't actually the name of the type of beaver, but rather, it is the name of the exudate from the castor sacs of the mature North American beaver (Castor canadensis) and the European beaver (Castor fiber). I am fortunate enough to have my own piece of genuine ambergris, some castoreum (which is no more unethical that eating sustainably-sourced meat), and hyraceum in my perfume palette. Pure costus root smells wild, like the smell of scalp or wet dog fur.

@@thefragrancewriter An encounter with real civet surely is a trip. It's unfortunate that it is near impossible to find a truly ethical and sustainable source. It just so happens that my first experience with hyraceum (aka "Africa stone") was through purchasing some from Mandy.

Very good introduction to animalic notes. Honey could also have been included (it's an animal product, after all). To some people, honey notes smell urinous.

Thank you for explaining so well! Most animalic notes smell like old sweat, dirt/dust, urine/feces to me - not scents that make me feel anything but slightly ill. Now I'm more fully understanding animalic notes, after watching your video. I'm still trying to figure out which animalic notes (s) create that slightly sweet, very sexy scent that works with florals and the like, but it's okay - another learning journey sounds good! Thanks again! 😊

Bal a Versailles was the first parfum i smelled on all my aunts and grandmother in the late 60's ; it was all the rage of Black women in nyc, when they hit the jazz clubs at night ! ambroxan is not a replacer for ambergris, but it is part of its smell. though in quite low quantities. the main aromatic compound is ambrein, which leans more into the labdanum direction than ambroxan.

Interesting! But are there still houses or indie houses that still use the traditional materials/ingredients like true musk, true civet oil?
@fernandomilan87544 жыл бұрын
Bortnikoff and Areej Le Dorè are the pinnacle in perfumery nowadays, in my opinion. They say the musk they use is ethically harvested (there is hunting season for the deer in Russia and they use take the sacks from these hunt animals but they don’t kill them specifically for the musk). If one believes it or not is another history. But their perfumes are on a whole other level. Their musk and their Oud is something with no parallel in today’s perfumery.

I LOVE one perfume, the original scent is discontinued. It's Magie Noire, an animalic scent that is discontinued. It was launched in the 70s and changed formula in 1986. It made it more sweet and powdery, and I'm not a fan. I finally found a very inexpensive vintage one as the original formula. It has civet in it. The only thing here is that I can get it on ebay, which doesn't fund Lancome. I have recently been trying to find anti cruelty perfumes, and if I can't afford the vintage on ebay, I am switching to a different animalic perfume that is cruelty free. I've been switching to cruelty free makeup brands too.

I just started collecting colognes and I was worried about animal testing in perfumes but unfortunately that is part of this industry especially because of China's requirement for perfumes to be animal tested before they're sold. Since majority of designer brands want to sell in China, animal testing is part of their manufacturing process. It is what it is and I don't even eat animals, except for some fish and seafood.

I'm curious to explore animalic fragrances but not sure if I'd like them very much if to strong. The idea of smelling like body odor, fecal, or urine you have to admit doesn't like something a frag head would like. I also know that sometimes you need a little dirty to make soothing clean smell sparkling. There are notes that I associate with dark or dirty which might be animalic but my nose is not very trained and I'm late to the fragrance hobby. An example are with th Mugler A*men line which all seem to have a similar dark/dirty note on dry down I don't like as to Mancera Crush and PDM Kalan. Which I knew what it was.
