PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING. I found him "crash landed" in the parking lot at work. Something must have scared him out of the water and since it was night he must have thought our lot was water and attempted to land. I called for a wildlife marshal however there wasn't one on duty since it was after midnight and the police said to just leave it outside.I didn't want to just leave leave him paying in the parking lot so I did some research and apparently loons cannot walk very well (if at all), he did attempt to move his legs to get away but couldn't stand up to move. He tried flying away but didn't get far and "crashed" back in the lot. His foot was bleeding a bit from scraping on the asphalt but it stopped on its own. I released him in a nearby creek and he happily floated away, the creek he was released in was adequate for him to survive in and take off in flight when he wanted. This bird was not tortured in anyway and I took the opportunity to film him while I waited for the police to arrive.

That happens with other waterfowl too. Especially in the rain when the dark asphalt glitters like the surface of water, swans for example sometimes crashland and hurt themselves ❤️‍🩹 I wish there was giant bird stickers like those you put on windows to keep them from thinking it’s water

I had the same thing happen to me when I was 13! Virginian; I had to get one that broke its leg out of the flood containment area of my pool's pond after he tried to clear two ponds, failed twice, and then got stuck on his second attempt. Dude almost stabbed me but I was able to put a rubber band around his beak and wrap him up in a towel. Animal Control didn't believe me when I said I caught a loon.. till he got here and opened the box~ xD

Can't imagine what another few hours in that state-confused, lonely, unable to move, exposed-would have been like. I know this video is nearly 10 years old, but good on you. Scenarios like this happen quite a bit during the summer here in the U.K. - after it rains, the sunlight shining off surface water on tarmac can make roads look like stretches of water to birds in flight, and so it’s not unheard of to see large water birds such as swans come in to land, then get into difficulty getting back into the air since they don’t have enough space to gather the speed required.

I’ve seen swans try to walk on ice to get across the water and the poor things can barely get by - the dominant ones end up fighting each other for ‘water space’

Such a beautiful bird. The loon might have "crash landed" and got separated from it's partner or migratory flock. It seems very confused to not hear a response back from it's other loon(s). Poor Lil guy. I hope they managed to find them again. Thank you for taking the time out of your day/night to look after it! Loons are very, very vulnerable on land (because of their dense bones / inexperience to walk properly with their huge feet) and easy, EASY prey for any predators in the area (Even distracted humans! Since it was stranded in a parking lot, it could have easily been run over by a car 💔) Bless your heart, you did all you could for it. (And the right thing!) Much love and respect for you.

Yes, it is true that Loons cannot walk very well on the ground because their legs are situated farther back on their bodies than any other wayer bird. They are fantastic swimmers, and diving is their feeding/defensive specialty. This person did a huge favor to the stranded Loon and likely saved it's life by getting it to water and releasing it. On land they can be easily taken by a predatory animal or hit by a car. Sir, you did exactly what was best for this unfortunate situation and just ignor the uninformed commenters!

I’ve read stories about loons dying like this even after they’re rescued from the injuries to their breast, so thank goodness you helped, ik this vid is 10 years old tho. They’re so top heavy that they can’t walk long distances, just short little spurts between nearby bodies of water. They also need adequate space to take off from. Such cool birds though, love hearing their sound on a calm night.

Aww, I'm soo glad you helped it. I was worried as soon as I saw the thumbnail because it wasn't in water. I came upon one just like this near my home when i was younger; coming home late from work. I think it thought the puddle in the street was bigger than it was. My mom, thankfully, knew all about them; she loves birds. The one we found was exhausted. I took it home for the night, we gave it something to eat and released it in a creek early the next morning. It seemed to circle back in thanks, before eventually swimming away.
