LOOP THE FOLD CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK WITH OUR TOYOTA 4RUNNER | BURR SWITCHBACKS | WOLVERINE LOOP

Loop the Fold at Capitol Reef National Park in Utah is an amazing scenic drive that takes you off the beaten path. We spent the day in our Toyota 4Runner exploring Loop the Fold, Burr Trail Switchbacks and Wolverine Loop Road, which is part of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Loop the Fold takes you around the Waterpocket Fold at Capitol Reef, which is a buckle in the Earth’s surface of almost 100 miles, that formed along an ancient fault between 50 to 70 million years ago. The Burr Trail switchbacks are one of the few passages across the Grand Staircase. The dirt road of the switchbacks climb 800 feet up the side of the mountain. The grade is steep and the curves are sharp, but the views are definitely worth it. The Wolverine Loop Road detours off the Burr Trail and brings you through parts of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The Wolverine Loop road has several washes and should only be traveled with a high clearance vehicle. The back road driving tour is a great way to see the remote southern part of Capitol Reef National Park that is rarely visited by tourists.

There are so many cool places to explore in both Utah and Colorado. Capitol Reef National Park in Utah is one of our favorites. It doesn't have all of the crowds like Arches, but still has a lot of great places to explore. Our 4Runner is not lifted, but we did switch out the stock skid plate and put in a better one. We are definitely going to be watching your channel also. Take care!

Can you get a map of this road at the visitor center? Visiting this month

Hi there! Yes we were able to get a map of this driving tour at the Visitor Center. It is referred to as the Loop the Fold Driving Tour in the Southern Waterpocket District of the Park. The Loop the Fold Driving portion is 124 miles and follows this path: > Start at the visitor center and follow Highway 24 east to the Notom-Bullfrog Road. > Turn right on the Notom-Bullfrog Road and drive south to the Burr Trail Road junction. > Turn right on the Burr Trail Road and drive west to Boulder, UT. > Turn right (north) on Highway 12 to Torrey. > Turn right (east) on Hwy 24 back to the visitor center. We added on the Wolverine Loop portion into our drive. For that portion of the drive you do need a 4WD vehicle. The Wolverine Loop was a left hand turn off of the Burr Trail Road after we had travel up the Burr Switchbacks. It was clearly marked with a BLM road sign. I hope you have a great time!
