I own it and several others on this list on DVD. Good list, but there's a few worth mentioning. The remake of Night of The Living Dead is fantastic and was a gem from 1990. The last Boyscout is an underated action and comedy staring Bruce Willis. Universal Solider was another underated action-packed film that really was pretty big when it came out. People Under The Stairs was Wes Cravens' work in the 90's that showed that he could make horror that was also based on social commentary like the LA riots, which were going on at the time. I like that you have Peter Jackson's early films like Dead Alive, but The Frighteners really showed Jackson's ability to adapt to great visual effects. There's many others I can think of that I personally own today because they were such good films that I know I will want to watch again. Lots of great movies actually came out in the 90s. Dark City was actually being filmed on the same lot as The Matrix, but you seem to forget about The 13th Floor, which does something similar. I don't think any of those ideas would have come about without Ghost In The Shell, one of my personally favorite anime films from the 90's of all time. Strange Days, which I used to own, doesn't take place in the near future it's in 1999 on new year's eve which was the future when the film came out.

The love for Galaxy Quest that turned it into a cult classic grew organically over the years. Even if the studio hyped it when it came out, it still might have taken a while to grow into what it is today. Oh -- and besides Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver, you can't forget Sam Rockwell and Tony Shalhoub rounding out the cast. Plus Enrico Colantano and smaller roles by Rainn Wilson, Missy Pyle, and Justin Long.

Dark City was much more cerebral than Matrix was. Matrix rand with the light idea of being stuck in a manipulated environment and used it as a springboard to make some truly amped up action sequences. Any deep questions into the logic behind anything fell flat, but it was fun and action packed. That is why it did so much better then Dark City, which ran more like a Hitchcock film or Gumshoe Noir with a scifi twist. It was more about the head game.

I have never understood why 1) The Rocketeer wasn't HUGE when it came out and 2) why more people don't know it today? I don't know what else you could want - a PERFECT adaptation of an amazing comic, pitch perfect casting of a slew of phenomenal actors who give some of the best performances of their careers (Timothy Dalton, I'm looking at you!), and a production quality that would make Cecil Demille slap his mother. What the hell am I missing?!?!?

The Rocketeer fictionalized history, in this case WWII. That rarely works. Captain America wouldn't work if it was set in 1943. Science fiction + history is generally a bad combination. That was a genre in the 1960's, for example 10,000 Leagues under the Sea. Rocketeer was 30 years away from that. Haven't you noticed we have decades of the same genre? Science fiction 1970s, 1980s was the action hero, 1990's kind of mixed it up, we've been in the super hero genre forever now.

Almost all of these films I saw either in the theater or on video not long after their release on home video. I would say that The Frighteners was Jackson’s better 90’s offering and also very under-appreciated. Cool World had one of the best soundtracks of all-time, along with Judgement Night, another gem. Many of these sci-fi films were much more cerebral, though they had action, it was not the focus of these films, it was more incidental. The Last Action Hero was ahead of its time and tom noonan did such a good job of parodying hid villain persona, like in Manhunter or Robocop 2. Also, Jennifer Connolly was, in my opinion, absolutely at her height of beauty during this time especially in The Rocketeer.

Ed Wood, Galaxy Quest and Mystery Men are fun, smart and easy to watch. Event Horizon is like a colonoscopy, someone thinks it's needed but the anesthesiologist called in sick and they went ahead anyway.

Funny how so many of the so-called Box office bombs mostly turned out to be my favorite movies not only of that particular year they came out but stayed my favorites all throughout my life. Talking about a good 80 to 90%. And seeing clips of them every so often, it urges me desperately to watch them anew and then again. So I've already seen very many of these films innumerable times.

Maybe because it was not on this list because it was not on the big screen but 'Cast A Deadly Spell' deserves a spot here. A wonderful pastiche of Cthulhu Mythos and film noir.
