I appreciate this "freely given" tip. Interesting how some people feel they can judge all and everything…without acknowledging the value you just gave them! Oh well, what else is possible? Thanks for this great info. I had NO idea what the heck that was! :)
@nateo2009 жыл бұрын
I plan to use this feature with my GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition as an occasional dash cam. I was made aware that looping can quickly kill the read/write cycles of SD cards but Sandisk makes a specific "video surveillance" MicroSD card that is able to withstand more read write cycles....a bit pricey but I ordered a 64GB version for $35....its a White MicroSD card and its called the Sandisk High Endurance Video Monitoring MicroSDXC card.
@brynmag9 жыл бұрын
nateo200 I haven't heard about that. Thanks for the info., I will check it out.
@nateo2009 жыл бұрын
Brynmag Productions Yup! I have a DSLR with magic lantern and I have the bit rate bumped up nearly twice the normal rate. Many of these high end cards from Sandisk guarantee fast *read* speeds but the read speeds and write speeds are never symmetrical! For video you want fast write speeds without a doubt and the High Endurance Video Monitoring cards guarantee it to be symmetrical which can only help.
@brynmag9 жыл бұрын
nateo200 I've played around with Magic Lantern on my DSLR but have not tried adjusting the Bit Rate. I was interested in the timelapse function and Zebra focus but could not get them to work properly. I need to have another go but I am so busy just trying to keep up with making GoPro related videos for KZbin, Ebay & Amazon.
@nateo2009 жыл бұрын
Brynmag Productions Magic Lantern was extremely frustrating for me at first but once I got it to function it function proper. For higher bitrate you have to have the absolute most fastest writing SD cards, even if you can't afford the 32 or 64GB cards it really doesn't matter since the times I use higher bit rate are when I have a computer near by to offload the video, you still get buffer issues that stop the recording but you can run 2.2x the bit rate for a while, really depends on the card, the camera temp., how much content is already on the card, etc. The RAW video feature on the latest versions is pretty cool as well, I only have a 550D but for the higher end cameras you can get close to HD in RAW, its quite the workflow though, for me I end up spending a lot of time in After Effects to get it in the right format after using the special plugin and then export to ProRes for editing, with RAW you don't get audio either. I honestly wish Canon would just allow straight 1080p in ProRes 422 Lite, it would be such an improvement. ANYWAYS, spend a day learning the ropes of magic lantern, it took me some time for sure, lots of forum reading and KZbin videos to watch at first lol.

+nateo200 that's a pretty good idea, I use mine as a dash cam for crash evidence if needed. never thought about setting It for a 20 min loop or so, that would be enough to get my footage. I have one of the adhesive mounts directly under my rear view mirror and the camera stays on the windshield.

Thank you for the in depth explanation of what looping does because really I had no idea. All of these people posting negative feedback should have left the page after they got the answer they were looking for within the first 30 seconds. You're not wasting their time, they just wasted their own.
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steven, I appreciate your comment. I don't worry too much about negative feedback. It's mostly 13 year olds with no patience, who don't have a clue how much work goes into making videos designed to help people. Having said that, it does make sense to pay attention to the analytics. If too many people click away in the first 30 seconds, then the video is not engaging enough to make them stay....and they are less likely to rate and share the video, which is ultimately what helps my channel grow. I'm still learning and improving my methods all the time. A shorter intro and no text titles has helped increase my watch times, which dictates how the video ranks. As my channel grows, it is more appealing to companies who want me to review their products, so it's a win-win for everyone if my channel grows quicker. The one thing I don't like, is people who just say nasty shit for no reason.

nice tip..thanks! i take it that if i set the looping to max capacity, it will record to the max capacity of the sd card and then automatically start to rewrite from the beginning?
@brynmag9 жыл бұрын
DjK Productions You're welcome. Correct, During the looping process video is organised into Chapters. For a Loop length of 5 mins, it creates 5 x 1 minute chapters. For longer loop lengths, it creates 5 minute chapters. If you select MAX, once you fill the card, it will overwrite the first 5 minute chapter and so on. Once you hit stop, it saves off the recording as a file. Note: Recordings will still comply with the fat 32 file restrictions which break files into blocks of a maximum of 4Gb's. They can be put back together seamlessly in an editing program. Hope that makes sense. Cheers Bryn

Hey Bryn, I really like this idea for motorcycle touring I usually end up with either a bunch of footage I don't need or when there is something I'd like to have recorded of course I wasn't recording or didn't have my camera ready. Do you know if the new hero 4 models have this option for looping?
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
It is very popular for using the GoPro as a dash cam. I still have to make that video but so much to do. You could use it as a MotoCam. Set whatever interval you want. Maybe 15 mins or half hour. Having an external battery pack helps too. If you could mount that on your bike somewhere, it would be perfect. Yes, both the HERO4 camera have looping.

Hello It is always my intention to cover every feature of each camera as they come out. However GoPro just keep releasing more gear and accessories, not to mention after market accessories, and I find I can't keep up. The HERO3+ Black is still my favourite version. The HERO4 Black is a great camera too but I think the HERO4 Silver is better suited to the average Joe user. I will continue to make as many GoPro videos as I can. Thanks for subscribing.

Sounds a little complicated at first, but makes sense in the end the way you explain it and is exactly what I need when backpacking and wont have many chances to copy videos from the memory card to an external hard drive! Thank you.
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
It's dead easy to set up and it is great for activities where you never know when that cool moment is going to occur, like landing the perfect Snowboard trick, that sort of thing. I imagine when backpacking, charging batteries would also be an issue. If you used an external USB power supply like the Power Bank or PNY (chuck it in a pocket of your backpack), you could virtually film all day (looping) and only keep what you really want by pressing the shutter to save it.
@markshirran110 жыл бұрын

So it would record a 5 min interval then it keeps recording and once you stop it only 5 minutes of a certain thing will be saved? im not completely understanding it...
@LeeAndersonMusic7 жыл бұрын
If you set it to MAX for example, the camera records until the card is full. At that point, it starts to overwrite the first part. Say you record 1 minute longer after the card is full, you would lose the very first minute of footage to make space. This is perfect for survailance cameras and dashcams. I use it on my helmet cam on my motorcycle so when I need to save something that happened in the past hour, I can just press the shutter button.

Today I was experimenting with time lapse watching clouds go over. it was cool (although my PC, even with a gaming video card, had trouble even with the 2700 minimum resolution offered for time lapse) my (fully charged when I started) battery was dead in less than an hour so I wonder how useful it is. And if I did the looping mode which involves constant video I can't imagine how a 120 minute setting would work. Do you plug them into the charger for stuff like this?

Can you make the go pro 3 plus record like every 2 minutes for example? And if so where would you find that on the settings?
@finaldraft1518 жыл бұрын
It serves a good purpose if you know you captured good footage, but if you want to record for long durations (either until the card fills up or the battery drains) you would want to avoid this setting as it will continue to erase and re-record over previous footage, correct?
@brynmag8 жыл бұрын
+finaldraft151 Totally depends on why you want to loop your footage in the first place. A good example is using the camera as a dash cam...you only want to keep the good bits - road rage, crashes, etc - not all the boring bits. Another example is for filming at the Terrain Park - you might have lots of snowboard video but haven't captured that perfect landing yet - when you stick, you just know - that's when you save off your footage.

Only thing I can think of is keeping track of the loop timer, wouldn't want to override something 'cool' so to speak, also maybe inconvenient to keep pressing the shutter? Recording the 5 min chunks that save after each 5 mins would be handy, that would save sifting...
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
If you are not sure what you are trying to capture, then it makes sense to just record the whole thing. However if for example you a repeatedly riding the Terrain Park trying to land that perfect rail, then Looping allows you to filter out the duds. A lot of people use it for Dash cams. You only keep the road rage and crashes. Lol

I have a quick question: When you reach the 5 minute mark, does it record over the previous footage second for second, or will it delete a whole minute after a new one is added?
@brynmag9 жыл бұрын
***** Team Wagy I'll have to write a good explanation of how it works and put it in the description because I keep getting asked this question and I don't have the time to keep answering and explain it properly at the moment. It's all about the process called "Chaptering". But you should end up with a 5 Minute clip when you press stop. For 5 Minute Loops, the camera creates 1 minute "chapters". The 6th Chapter overwrites the 1st chapter. When you hit STOP, the camera assembles a 5 minute FILE.

Ok I think I get that but what I don't get is, i was receding a 20 minute video earlier and wasn't using the looping feature and it split it into 2 separate videos instead of one constant video. Why?
@brynmag9 жыл бұрын
April Tew Hi April. Thanks for watching. It's a normal thing for GoPro recordings to split into separate files. It's because of the limitations caused by using the Fat32 file protocol, that means you can't create files larger than 4 GB. Some cameras (like my Canon 600D) just stop recording altogether when the limit is reached....but GoPro (and other cameras) keep recording but make a number of files that can be put back together seamlessly in an editing program. The file lengths will differ, depending on what resolution and frame rate you are using and therefore reach the limit at different time lengths. I hope this helps Cheers Bryn

THIS IS SUCH A INFORMATIVE VIDEO, THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS. ONE QUESTION I HAVE PLEASE: I am using my gopro 3+ black edition as CCTV camera, i am keeping my camera turned ON and recording in 20 minutes loop mode at 1080p at 30 FPS for atleast 12 hours straight in a day. 5 days a week, it is performing great. no issues at all so far. I have mains power socket just next to the location where i need my gopro, so I am powering the camera straight from the Mains Wall Socket. MY CONCERN IS, THE LIFE OF GOPRO ITSELF... NOT THE BATTERY. WILL THIS DAMAGE MY GOPRO? I,E, LIFE OF THE GOPRO ITSELF GOING TO BE SHORTEN BY USING IT AS CCTV CAMERA AND RECORDING IT CONTINUOUSLY IN 20 MINUTES LOOP MODE? IT GETS HOT, BUT NOT ABNORMALLY HOT.
@brynmag7 жыл бұрын
Hi I wouldn't be too concerned about the life of the camera. However I would suggest perhaps removing the battery from the battery compartment. You can still record without the battery in the camera if you have mains power. It's normal for GoPro cameras to run hot. You could even leave the battery compartment door off as well to allow more air to help cool the camera. Bryn

Can you help me figure out why my go pro 3+ records for a maximum of 17min 25sec increments? I have the recommended sd card installed btw.
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
That's normal. Due to the Fat32 File format, which only allows files up to 4Gb in size, the GoPro HERO breaks your recording into 17min,25sec files. Some cameras (like Canon DSLR's) just STOP recording when they reach 4GB and that's it. The good thing is the GoPro continues to record in the next file. If you put them together in an editing program, the transition will be seamless. So it's all good.

Hi You can't make one continuous file straight out of the HERO3. The files are broken into less than 4GB individual files due to FAT32 file protocol restrictions. But you can seamlessly join the files together in an editing program. Regards Bryn

@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
Correct, unless you hit the shutter button to stop recording. That will save off the last 5 minute file. You then hit shutter again to restart LOOPING.

Hey which U prefer record under NTSC 30fps or PAL 25fps ?
@brynmag7 жыл бұрын
I just use NTSC 30fps most of the time now. I only record PAL 25 if I intend to mix with another camera that only records in PAL. Having said that, I use Vegas Movie studio to edit and it does a pretty good job of frame matching anyway, so no big deal either way.

what battery are you using that gives you 6H45m of life on a 3+?
@brynmag7 жыл бұрын
No, that would be the estimated Total remaining record time that can fit on the memory card that is in the camera. You may have to switch out batteries to achieve that.
@HeyStripes7 жыл бұрын
Brynmag Productions I assume that's a 64gb card then right?

Thank you! I've bought a suction cup, the frame and a long cable to reach the cigarette lighter port to make this into a dash cam. Received them all today. I was concerned my 64gb card wouldn't record all day but this feature is perfect! Thank you for the explanation. My only final concern is my car charger is a dual usb port with 1amp and 2amp outputs. I currently run my phone off the 2amp so I hoping the 1amp port will provide enough juice for the gopro. I'll find out tomorrow. Cheers :)
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
The 1 Amp should be fine. That's what the GoPro needs to run. You can also plug it into the 2 Amp, as the GoPro will still only draw 1 Amp.
@saracenrush201010 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, good to know :)
@kevinstones119610 жыл бұрын
Just curious, why wouldn't your 64gb card record all day? Does this feature also save memory space?
@saracenrush201010 жыл бұрын
It will record for 4 hours and something while my working day is 8. This feature will record for just 5, 20, 60 etc minutes and just re-record over it until you press the button to save a portion and then start recording again. In other words, unless I press the button to save the last looped footage, say in the event of an accident I wish to record, it will continue to loop and on the 20 minute settings at the end of the day I will only have ~20 minutes of footage.

quick question: when loop time is set to MAX, does it divide the video file into chapters?
@brynmag8 жыл бұрын
Yes. But Note chapters is not the same as segments. The camera records chapters | when you reach the MAX limit of the card, the last chapter is recorded over the first and so on | when you save off the recording, a video file is created. That file is broken into segments less than 4gb to fit in with the Fat32 file protocol. You can then stitch them together seamlessly in an editing program.

I'm a trucker and have a hero 3+ Black with a 32gb card. I'm thinking of using my go pro as a dash cam but according to the specs on go pro page it will not record as long as we can drive in a day. Would this work so I can continuously record the whole day because it will delete old boring stuff from the beginning? Especially if I set it for "max"
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
neolightproductions Well you could start by getting a 64GB MicroSD memory card. That would double your capacity. But yeah the idea of Looping is that you rewrite over the boring stuff and only save off the bits you want. If you hit stop after something good (or bad) happens, you will have that. You should try it for a day and see how it goes for you. Let me know.
@MrRant-ug2fm10 жыл бұрын
without power supply this wont make sense since the battery is only good for maybe an hour. u can get the bacpac which doubles your battery life. so u have 2 hours, still not enough. of course u can swap batterys every 2 hours but i imagine this to be hella annoying. so the only way to do this is to have a usb cable and mount it in a way so ur mount or case or whatever you use, wont cover ur usb charging input (i believe such cases exist, not sure though). ANYWAYS, i'm not so sure if the sensor of your gopro will do this for such a long time. especially not in hd or even full hd, since it will overheat if you don't give it additional cooling. so before you wreck your valuable gopro filming the street, rather get a dashcam thats meant to be a dashcam, theyre waaay cheaper than a gopro :) so this is just my humble opinion, maybe it helps you :)
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
Maximillian Schwan The best way to use your GoPro as a dash cam is to use a USB/12V lead and plug it into the 12V socket on your dash (cigarette Lighter). That will run all day. But the overheating issue is more the problem. I would only use 720 or 1080 at the most. That should run cool enough. You can use the Frame mount to allow access to the USB input as well as allow more airflow to the camera.
@geraldcherney6410 жыл бұрын
+Maximillian Schwan Why not drill a hole out for the usb?

I'll probably just buy "the frame". Possibly an external mic so I can get it closer to me so you don't hear all road/truck noise.

my gopro hero4 always stop on 17:43mins why?
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
Does it break your recordings into 17.43 segments or just stops after 17.43 and that's it?
@cedie10 жыл бұрын
Brynmag Productions stop at 17:43 then start again
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
cedieboy cedie Ok, that's normal. It's a constraint of storage devices that use the Fat32 system, that you can't record files bigger than 4GB. So the GoPro breaks your recording up into a number of recordings no bigger than 17:43. If you place them back together in your editing program, you wont notice it at all.
@cedie10 жыл бұрын
Brynmag Productions this fat32 system only on hero4? i dont experience this problem on my hero 3+ black

I use it and have known about it for a while, however, if you have it set to max and have a 64gb card it won't work (known flaw) :'( and that's what I really need it for.
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
What happens when you use Max with a 64 card? I haven't actually tried that mode, as I can't see a use for it personally. What activity do you want to use it for?
@wantsanewvehicle10 жыл бұрын
Brynmag Productions If using max loop on a gopro 3 black with a 64gb card, it will fill the card and then stop recording (ex: not loop.. as if loop is not on). I first read about it on a couple different forums.. so it's not just my camera that does it. I then email gopro customer service. They said that they know about it, and it's only with 64gb cards and the black edition. I use my camera for all sorts of things, mostly as basically a dash cam, and if nothing happens I would like to not have to mess with deleting the footage (just let it loop forever until something happens or I use it for something else). I have also used it as a security cam in my window when I was at work because somebody was messing around with stuff at my place 64gb only gets you 6.5 hours at 1080 30fps.. I needed the camera to record for about 10 hours, however I only needed to see the 4 hours leading up to the 10th hour.
@brynmag10 жыл бұрын
wantsanewvehicle For the dash cam, could you not use it on 1 Hour loops and if something happened, hit stop after that? As for security cams, I think the longest footage with a 64Gb card is about 9.5 hours on a HERO3 White. Maybe down the track we will see 128 GB MicroSD cards that work with the GoPro but until then, that's the limit.
@wantsanewvehicle10 жыл бұрын
Brynmag Productions i could probably put it on 1 hour loop for the dash cam, yup. I have just been deleting what I don't need. For the security cam, I don't need it right now.. but I already have a black not a white, lol. To spend 200 on a white might as well just get a real security cam setup. That solves those two issues, but there are other things I would like to use max loop for, too.. and it's a feature that should work and it doesn't which is the real problem.
@slackerz3511 жыл бұрын
I've tried this. But it does not loop instead dies at 5 mins.
