Either of the Black series. Protunes gives you the closet thing to logarithmic footage, higher bit depth, and no auto de-grain. Also better resolution options (2,7k at 24p :D )

It's always good to worry about heat. Your dash area can heat up really high. These cameras are good at taking a beating but I've had mine act up in the cold and heat. If you can keep it out of the sun for periods at a time I would. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, it's the main reasons why I didn't have this up yesterday. I don't see it until I render it out so I figured it had to be a codec data-rate issue. However I can't get rid of it. 3 different codecs and it just wouldn't go away. It may have something to do with forcing full 24bit depth but haven't had a chance to revisit it. I should add a note in the video about it. But I really appreciate you taking the time to leave feed back. Kinda makes up for it not getting the traction I'd hoped.

Hey, thanks so much for this video, it did help me figure out most of the things I wanted to know about both cameras. However, I'm a diver and therefore will use it in the water a lot of the time. This will be my first camera that I will use underwater. Which one would you suggest for divers, the silver or the black?

I'm back and forth on which one I should get. I'd like to use it for travel abroad videos and maybe travel vlogging, which is why the audio aspect is important to me. Also didn't want too much distortion as I wouldn't want a fisheye effect on my face if I was vlogging. I couldn't find too much of a difference between the black and the silver. Thinking I ought to just get the silver so I can use the saved $100 to get a pole and chest mount for it to take some cool shots.

I would recommend the Silver+. See the comment I left for Lilly Steele below. Pretty much same reason applies to you. Also set field of view to medium or just use GoPro software when you get back from a trip to remove fish eye. Really easy.

It's just more saturated. That doesn't mean it's better; you can always edit the colors in post and make it look the same as the silver.

The best thing you'll notice is how it handles changing and various lighting conditions. Take your "Best of BlasterBoy" when you look out to the field the grass looks very bloomy and you can't what's out there. about5-8 seconds go by and it adjusts but now everything that was perfect before is way to dark. Basically everything post Hero2 has solved that. Especially in woods streets surround by woods, you'll see a huge change.

Flaring usually comes from material over the lens :) For example, wipe your finger over a phone camera and flaring will occur.

Great video Mark. Looking to jump into either the Black+ or Silver+ this week. We mostly do footage of conventions, concerts, roller coaster POV's and several other things where a lot of movement is happening. Some of the rides and events we cover are very low light situations at best too. Since I do a lot of editing myself with Premier, would the Black+ be better go with in the long run?

These cameras aren't going to handle low light so well but if you do, the Black has one added option that improves things a little bit. I cover it in my video the GoPro Hero3+ Black vs GoPro Hero3 Black in Low Light. GoPro Hero3+ Black vs GoPro Hero3 Black in Low Light Anyway if you're doing a lot of post work, the Hero3+ Black has a lot more options for color correction (though I suggest not using Protunes in extreme low light conditions) , higher resolutions, and some really cool fps options. It can also record and take photos at the same time. The Hero3+ Silver can get you pretty far but you might have a good excuse to get the Black series.

You can find some of it the end. Mainly they share the same frame rates (1080p 60fps, 720p 120fps) but the super view cuts it down to 720p 100fps but can do up to 1440p 48fps. Again both pretty similar in terms of slow motions FPS

Superview is neat but it's nothing you couldn't do it post. I see the uses for it and it's a nice option. I don't like how squished it makes you appear but it'd be cool as a cockpit for track days.

I was debating on whether to get the silver+ or black+ and i couldnt figure out if paying more for the BE+ was worth the extra money (not thinking about the wifi remote) purely on video/photo quality. This video does show the pros and cons of both and does help with my decision making, but from you using it personally, what would be better of the two just using it for everyday use i.e making random videos and shooting random photos? I'd mainly suggest the Silver but you may want to upgrade to the Black if you do a lot of snowboarding. I find 1440p mode on anything with a trail to be the way to go. It adds extra field of view to the top and bottom of the frame so the camera is never pointed to low or high. You get everything from the trail to the sky. Then pick up some batteries, good micro sd card, and a mount or 2.

Great video, but do you have anything about the photos? I am a photographer, and recently got the h3+ silver, and now that I have tried it, even on daylight, the photos are very blurry. I don't know if I still don't know how to use it or is it a common problem... if you could please show me some samples of photos of both of them, I can still go and exchange it with the black edition... I go over photos around 02:50 ish Hero3+ Series of cameras excel at sharpness around 3-5 feet. Past that everything else is a little soft. The opposite is true with the Hero3 series. There is no real difference with the Hero3+ Black and Silver when it comes to depth of field.

Thanks for posting this Mark. Did you notice any changes to the way these new 3+ gopros white balance? We use these cameras to shoot an ice rink with the cameras always left on (via hdmi power). Recently, the arena underwent a re lamp, (1000W Metal Halide 4000Kelvin - same lamp part number) and now the ambient color temp seems to be out of the older gopro range. Thanks

Their is a firmware update that adds a lot of control to whitebalance, protons color mode, and more. Check out the GoPro dot com /support page on how to update. Little overwhelming at first but nothing a little toying around with won't solve.

Hi Mark, first of all thanks for your work here. I don't know if I got you correctly, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but for me it seems like the black edition offers a little more quality and thus more potential for editing, whereas the silver edition partly does the editing automatically for you. That would explain why (for me) the footage of the silver edition looked slightly better in terms of colors. Since I'll use my GoPro for personal travel recordings, I'd say I go with the less expensive silver edition. Does that seem legit to you? Thanks in advance!

Well I'm still in doubt between the two.. Haha! It's seems to look like the silver catches better colors (like the clear blue sky) somehow. I want to use it for casual stuff, like filming on holiday (including under water), taking it with me on days out, attach it to a bike or car and maybe some vlogging in between and maybe attach it to a rollercoaster a couple of times.

Go with the silver. Take the money you saved and get a sweet chest mount for the roller coaster and bike rides (though attach the camera after you've been seated otherwise they normally tell you to take it off). Also get a San Disk Ultra or Extreme SD card with some extra batteries.

More depends on how much you're going to play around with the camera after you film. The Black has 1440p (which I love but not for everyone) and can take pictures while recording a video which could be nice fore paragliding. Personally I urge people to put extra funds aside for mounts, batteries, and a decent SD card. Don't forget those items in your final cost.

Great review, read many comments but I'm still not sure which one to get. I'll be using the camera mostly for skiing and water sports (wakeboarding/skiing, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing) and wondering which will work better in those types of light. Both do great in these conditions. I'd ask yourself is it worth the extra money for the added features of the black or is it more worth it to pick up extra mouts and batteries to go with it.

Loved the vid explained a lot. Ii lost my hero 3 black and then bought a hero silver 3 plus recently, as they record full hd at same resolution. I didnt realise this until after watching your vid and my own silver footage, but it seems as though the hero3 black original has better sharper quality footage than my silver 3 plus. So have you noticed this too Mark or is it just me, should i stick with it or buy another hero black?

Hero3 Black series has better components. So while both do the same resolution, then offer different results. TheHero3+ Silver was weird because in a few ways it became weaker then it's previous year's model but made some other through software/hardware to make some scenarios more appealing. Taking a look at your channel I can see why. For you, long range focus is crucial. It's important to know the differences in each camera and choose which one works for what you're going to use it for. I think sticking with the Hero3 Black isn't a back idea. I do believe the Red hue is a correctable mistake but I disagree about the silver looking better. More eye catching but the colors are crunched to all hell. It's made too user friendly over last year's model at the cost of control perhaps.

Probably one of the best comparison on youtube you did a great job,my opinion of thaws two cameras is that I don't thing the black edition worth the extra money because if you buy a silver edition cheaper then you can spend the money you saved for not buying the black edition into some nice mounts

Really great comparison. MarkHawkCam One thing I noticed you didn't discuss. During your freeway ride BLACK edition handled vibration better. Silver was much more jittery. I know they don't list image stabilization as a feature but there is definitely something at work here.

Eh, it might be more timing. My mount wasn't holding on to well and it causes these micro vibrations (sucks). chances are while switching from A to B my car's AC system will kick in and cause the hood to vibrate (Learned this after). I had this happen in my Part 2 of the Sony HDR-AS15 and AS30. It was terrible.I wouldn't consider either better or worse with handling vibration. The CMOS Sensor in them is fairly identical at handling this issue.

No clue what would be best for me, looking to mount on a jetski, kayak, bike, and also just take on random adventures. Mostly looking to grab still photos from my footage though. Some videos of course, but more interested in still photos. Any thoughts MarkHawkCam??

Both would be fine. I'd go for the silver and use the extra money for more mounts, floaty bacpac, and extra batteries. I'd also aim for the silver and if you end up using it all the time, upgrade to the Hero4 when it probably comes this holiday season or goes on sale next summer. The differences are so minor unless you are really in need of deep color options, higher resolutions, or a remote.

Mark I want to buy a Go Pro Hero 3+ for my husband to take surfing. Which one should I buy, Silver or Black???????

Both would be fine but I'd say it's better to get the Silver+ with some mounts, batteries, and a proper micro SD card then just the Black+. If you have the money though the 30fps burst photo would be really cool for snapping that awesome skate board trick.

Yes and no. There will be new back doors released to fit the new case but the old back doors will not fit. If you own the "Frame" case you can use that case for now or if you have a last year's Hero3 case that'll fit the new camera and old premium accessories no problem. (Short Answer: Sorta but full supported soon with add ons)

so mark, which would you reccomend for driving video, sport video and concert footage? these are the things i do with my hero 3 white ed on a daily basis but i would like to upgrade if its going to help my footage. mostly it is used for concerts in relitivly dark music halls/bars

Imho Silver have a better color profile out of the box. Do you think that the "reddish" problem of Black edition will be fixed? @ 6:45 you can see the road, it's red! I like the extra sharpness of the black. Which is the best in low light condition?

Can't say for sure, feel like it would have been addressed by now. Still need to ask why GoPro why the Hero3+ has the red tint. I'm sure there has to be a good reason for it.

Thank you for this comparison video! It was exactly what I was looking for since I wanted to buy one before I go out snowboarding this coming winter season as well as take video on some rollercoasters :D. Which would you prefer for shooting some snowboarding videos considering the environment I will be in? For rollercoasters I'm sure the silver edition will suffice but I don't want the video to get washed out from all the white color when up in the snow. My apologies if some parts don't make sense

+NG3001 I would mainly get the Hero3+ Black because of 1440p mode at 30fps. offers a taller frame so you can capture everything from the trail in front of you to the sky above. It's a 4x3 format but it's still 1920x1440 so you can crop it down later to 1920x1080. Either option like you said would suffice but this is the route I'd go personally. They both would be great for that. However you will get higher quality photos of the Hero3+ Black. But when you scale it down to a timelapse video size (1920x1080) the difference won't be super noticble. I'd recommend going with the Silver+ and getting a good big Micro SD card but if you're heart is set on the Black+ you'll also get better filming resolutions, faster burst photo mode, remote, protones, and a little more. Comes down to what the extra features are and if it's worth that extra $100 bump. if you're gonna do timelapse just get a nice big micro SD card :) (And a good mount for the car)

Both would be fine. I'd go for the silver and use the extra money for more batteries (you'll need them) frame case, and the USB car charger.

Hi Mark, great comparison! I wonder what you would recommend for aviation use - mounting either inside the cockpit or outside, on a small airplane. Also, did you figure out the red color issue on the Black edition? I looked through the earlier comments, but haven't seen any about aerial shots. Thank you for your help!

Red tint is still there. If you're in a rush and want one for a upcoming trip, I suggest picking up the Hero3+ Black and filming inside the plane at 1440p. Will allow extra field of view at the top and bottom so it's never pointed to far down or up, plus you can always crop it down to 1080p later if you want to. Otherwise I'd wait till September. GoPro has announced their last 3 cameras in September. Not saying there will be one but there is a good chance something new is on the horizon.

It's not a simple answer. Ultimately to me it comes down to the buyer. What are they going to use it for, what is there knowledge in post, what are there filming habits. If you're someone who isn't going to spend a lot of editing or doing post work then the silver series is a better value for you. You're also going to want to consider the + series for it's improved battery life, better audio, and fast wifi. If you do spend a lot of time in post and you want higher resolutions so you have more wiggle room then you want the Black series.Again the same things apply with the + series here with one exception being how focal distance matters to you. If you want super sharp close up footage then you'll want the + series but the super sharp long distance focus is part of the original 3 series. So if your a Quad copter user then you'll put more value in long distance since you're never up close. Same thing if you're a diver,. The + series has better battery life which is good since you want your camera to stay operational as long as possible. The original 3 though has a better case for deeper dives. In this case you should get the +3 but maybe consider buying the Hero3 BacPac compatible case on its own. Anyway that roughly sums it up. Look at what's important to you and mix it with your estimated filming habits to determine which setup is worth most to you. I guess... if any of this even makes any sense :p

Ill be using it to film Fishing and underwater footage as well as driving monatges for long distance trips and adventures so it will be strapped to my chest or wrist when im fioing this as well as long poles for underwater footage. it will also be used for filming golf from ground level so just standing on the floor or attached to the golf cart. at the moment looking at the silver+ it seems to cover these bases cheers

I had a hard time with this when I was deciding between the Black or Silver a year ago, and found that once I bought a Black, and was able to compare my own videos with a buddies who had just bought a Silver, that there really is no option. The Black out performs the Silver in every way I could want it to. I would imagine its the same with the + models as well.

Very insightful video, but there were some key features I feel didn't answer the questions I came here for. Specifically the low light comparison (at night would have been great) and the audio comparison (hearing the difference in the car's motor wasn't helpful; what about a live band, or some other audio rich source?). Honestly not trying to be a nitpicky KZbin commentor, just came here to learn more about those two differences. Do you have any recent videos that show them in more detail?

Nah all feedback is good. No need to apologize. I do have 2 specific videos on the Silver+ vs Silver that go over a lot of different conditions and I have a low light dedicated video for the Hero3+ Black vs Black but neither of those videos pit these two cameras against each other. Should help give you a better idea but I understand it's less then ideal. Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. I've agreed with the music portion for future tests. Most other videos user music or voice at least as a common metric of comparison. Also both of these cameras are less then ideal at night. Anything past low light is super poor. With the exception of the Sony AS100V. I have a really good comparison of the AS100V vs the Hero3+ Black (and silver) that pretty much nail the areas that disappointed you here. take care :D

The benefit to Black series in terms of shooting is getting to film at 1440p 48fps. You can get this same field of view from 960p on the Silver plus though it's just not technically true HD. Not a whole lot of FPS differences that'd make a huge difference for you. Either camera would be fine so I'd suggest saving some money, get a chest mount (1440p or 960p behind the wheel would look pretty rad) and a few extra batteries.

I really enjoyed the comparison and it's helping me with my decision. I know you have gone into some of this with some other people but just wanted ask to be sure on my choice. I will use this 90% of the time for snowboarding and skateboarding and the other 10% for vacation adventure type stuff. I do about half of my snowboarding in the day and half at night (which is a big concern, about with which better performs in low-light). I do really enjoy editing my videos as well and making movies with my footage. The super view looked actually like it would be really good for board sports too. With that in mind what do you think would be best? (Sorry for the long post, and thank you for your videos and comments!)

***** LCD BacPac while cool is pretty much not needed. I only use mine when I bring it to parties where I know others might use it. Mainly if it's pointed in the general direction, you're going to capture it unless you are unbelievably close to your subject. Even then the results are still pretty rad as long as your pointing in the general direction. The battery drain off the LCD BacPac is pretty high as well. Something like 33%. Overall I'd hold off on buying it till after you've spent sometime with the camera. I think the Black Series is prob right for you. I'd look into filming in 1440p. Just search for 1440p in the comments and it'll apply to you. It's my recommend camera and mode I use for filming personally. I would also consider waiting till the end of September and see if a Hero4 is announced. Could be better or could lead to some discounts.
