ECE402? Fantastic class, if I could take it again I definitely would. Not often in a lifetime you get access to a full size Continuum, the designer of the instrument as your teacher, a private classroom turned into a studio, and Kyma with a Pacarena. If I remember correctly we didn't touch eagenmatrix much when I took it, we just jumped headfirst into the history and projects were mostly in Kyma. My final assignment was kind of open ended, my partner and I played around and ended up making a sort of imperfect implementation of the Hammond organ using the Continuum as a control surface. Bunch of cool random tidbits as well from someone with years of experience. Funny one I'm remembering now is how Prof Haken mentioned he never really had a use for optical digital connections, except for when he helps setup the Tesla coil concerts on campus (can't get zapped through an optical connection :P) (hoping they still do those on campus?)

Design is important. But as a boutique company as Haken is, which hand builds every single unit and many of them are directly built by Lippold Haken himself (all of them of them are checked and signed by him) the product is more important than the GUI aesthetics. The Eagan Matrix is not hard to learn because of the fonts, it is because it’s an advanced instrument. Just think that Lippold has worked together with Carla Scaletti on the algorithms of Kyma for a long time before the continuum “spin-off”. So when you buy the continuum you buy also this technology. About the aesthetics: what matters the most to me is the almost total absence of borders between me and the sounds generated from the Eagan Matrix. An ergonomics never reached by any controller yet. That’s what the continuum is. Lippold Haken is not an entrepreneur, he’s a scientist which loves music, he didn’t build the continuum in order to make money. While he’s off from his course at the college he builds the units. That’s what makes Haken unique = love and passion behind money and fame

This thing seems like it could be an incredible solo instrument, especially if it had a handle in the back like a melodica. I'm also envisioning creating a strap system to be able to strap it to my left forearm, so I can solo with my right hand on it. It would allow me to walk around on stage and interact with other band members while playing, and would surely add an element of performative interest for the audience!

I've always wanted the original big version but financially justifying it has never been in the realm of possibility. Now this comes along and while I think it's really cool, it seems like it sort of defeats the freedom of movement as intended and as someone else mentioned here, I would probably just go with a Roli Seaboard + Block combination due to price. This one wins on looks however but lookers typically aren't performers - not to say this doesn't perform nicely for what it is. If they could get the price down to sub $399 then maybe I would even consider it.

Rise 39 and I’m really happy with it. This looks like a big step back in terms of control, but it looks interesting because of its internal synth engine. How would you rate this against the Linnstrument 128? I play fretless bass, so that’s part of why I find this instrument appealing. The Linnstrument obviously has twice as many octaves, and you can also slide between them, but the silicone surface is a little bit sticky - while the surface on the continuumini seems much smoother. I just sold my Linnstrument 200 because I thought it was too big, and had originally thought of getting the 128, but then the continuumini popped up on my radar…

Thanks for this, how is the overall responsiveness (x,y,z) compared to Medusa
@loopop6 жыл бұрын
For X and Z - Much more. The Medusa is nice and certainly better than just having on/off switches but this excels on the X and Z axis motions - X because you can bend from note to note (not possible on the Medusa) and Z because there's a good travel distance. On the Y axis they're different too because the Mini has physical motion and Medusa doesn't but I wouldn't say one is better than the other.
@FunkTree6 жыл бұрын
@@loopop I hoped for this response, especially with X .. but Z? As you explain you can have only two points. Medusa can have more than two but I noticed that as soon as I introduce thumb (with nail) the X,Y gets very flaky. BTW do you still have the Medusa and if yes did you request /suggested any changes to handling Z (Y) thanks again!
@loopop6 жыл бұрын
@@FunkTree yes I still have Medusa - and my main request for Z was velocity detection and modulation (I sort of used a filter for that instead for now...). You're right that Medusa has fully polyphonic aftertouch and the Mini has only one or two at best, the thing with Z on Medusa unlike X and Y was that I couldn't really control it the way I can control Z on the ContinuuMini - where I can keep it fixed at any level I want by leaning my finger on the case. X and Y give you really nice fine placement control on Medusa, but Z (at least for me) was very hard to keep steady at one mod point, so I would resort to a relatively small mod depth so a finger shaking wouldn't be noticed. Hopefully I'm making sense and answering your question.....

Excellent review as usual. Owning both a Rise 49 and a Seaboard Block, they both do feel slightly different, maybe the same way the Continuum and the Mini surfaces are different? I'd love to get a 2 or 4 octave Continuum, but the price is just not something I can justify. I can see the Mini does have some limitations compared to it's big brothers, but still looks pretty interesting. How would you say the feel of the Mini stacks up against the standard Continuum?
@loopop6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The Block is my least preferred "expressive" controller - I really don't like the friction and feel and how it "folds up" when I play it, and it's way less sensitive than LinnStrument or Continuum. I own the Block and tried the Rise in store and it seemed similar but obviously that's not enough time to notice nuance. I still think Roli have done an amazing thing pricing it at $300, building apps and fantastic presets, and that if low price is a must then it's better than nothing, but I prefer the LinnStrument and even more so the big Continuum. Anyway, that's just so you know where I'm coming from and obviously this is very individual. To the point, when playing monophonically, even though they feel very different, with practice it's possible to reach similar results on the X and Z axis. They're very similar for slow attack/release sounds but different for fast percussive hits. The big Continuum is obviously way better on the Y axis and for playing polyphonically.
@dennisristow21026 жыл бұрын
@@loopop I would agree the Seaboard Block is a bit too spongy (giving) feeling to play anything but slow, evolving sounds. It is great for that, but for quicker dynamic playing the Rise is way better. It still gives a little, but a LOT less than it's sibling Block. Of course like you say, the price difference explains that a bit. The Seaboard Block is spec'd to conform to their other Block line of interfaces so it has that handicap, while the Rise units are on a different platform and have a more pro feel, IMO. They appear at a glance to be very similar in surface material, but the more ridge Rise Seaboards are easier to play. I've never tried first hand a full Continuum or the LinnsStrument to compare it to the Rise but all these new variations on MPE controllers take some practice to really become comfortable with. I've always wanted to pick up a TouchKeys kit and install it on a 2 octave controller just to see how that plays, being an extension of a standard piano type keyboard. touchkeys.co.uk/ You don't get the X axis slide like you do with the Haken or Roli but looks like a great way of adding MPE to the more familiar piano/organ style keyboard. I like the expressiveness of the XKey, but the TouchKeys bring it to a regulation keyboard.

Lovely review. An interesting instrument. A leap forward in improvement of the sensitivity of the human interface over and above what's capable on a tablet touchscreen. Pity I don't have $899 spare as I have a DeepMind 12 promised to myself for Xmas. But for those of you that do....grab with both hands.

May be $599 now having checked out prices stated by Kickstarter

whats the usb to midi host?
@loopop6 жыл бұрын
it's by a company called hobbytronics from the uk - cheap, but you have to be careful it's very "bendy" and feels a bit like it might break... works so far though!
@junglsmor6 жыл бұрын
it cant be battery powered? thats kind of annoying...kind of off topic question...i have an artiphon instrument 1 and se02. is there a cable/adaptor where i could connect them straight through that you know of or would i need the hobbytronics thing? i wish the artiphon has normal midi. or even bluetooth. but its only usb. and i think mini usb too.
@loopop6 жыл бұрын
A small power brick does the trick, but no built in battery. Not familiar with the artiphon but if it sends midi over usb you need a host
@steveelbows37976 жыл бұрын
@@junglsmor The Retrokits RK005 is another usb midi->midi option, which I have had working myself with the artiphon. Its not as cheap as the hobbytronics one though.

Will you do an episode on the touchė? Possibly include it in your book? I made a Discord channel for discussions on it also: discord.gg/pBghaY
@loopop6 жыл бұрын
Hey - I’ve used touché in a few episodes and probably will again but honestly I don’t think I can do a better job than the company’s videos - they explain it really well. Definitely worth a mention in the expressive instruments section of my book though - I will include it in the next update!

loopop sounds good. I’ll check for those episodes. So you have Discord?

Couldn't the same exprecissive results be achieved with the "touche"?
@loopop6 жыл бұрын
For some of the dimensions, partially but for things like note to note pitch bends/glides or controlling everything with one finger, no. That said there are expressions touché has and this doesn’t.

They need to sell a desktop synth module for people who own a Roli or a Linnstrument :)
