Thank you for bringing this to light! I just recently got sl done and the consultant charged me for 10” but only locked about “5! And I asked her to finish them, she gave me excuses about my hair texture & twice mentioned that I could get someone else to do them. after I paid her over $1,000 to do my hair!

THIS IS WHAT I’M DEALING WITH!!!!!! I locked my daughters TO THE ENDS and expected the person to do the same with mine….I want my ends CLOSED because they are too open and causing frizz! 😩 I was told I would do more harm then good and it will leave holes and to just trust the process! And I’m like NO!!! I know what I want! My daughter hair ends are still intacted….so I did one myself to prove it can be done…long story short…I’m just going to have to close my ends myself. But watching this just confirmed everything I’m feeling. I paid too much money to have half my hair locked!!! And now have to put in time to lock the ends but it will look better overall and easier to retain my length!

Damn, I wish I knew this before I got my locs installed last year...I did like the curly ends at first. Especially during the early stages before my locs thickened. But at my last retightning, I was told to make an appointment to close the ends. At first, I didn't know what she was talking about, but she explained that if it's not done before they mature, the ends will continue to get thicker. She did one for me as an example to show what it would look like and I prefer how it looks compared to the others. I did always wonder what would happen to my ends, but I just assumed they would loc by themselves or whatever. This is definitely going on the list of "What I wish I knew before" lol

I also thought it was supposed to be that way. My loctitian left knots on my ends (the knots came from my hair during the locking process that didn't get detangled.) I'm interested in coily ends, similar to how my natural hair was before I got my sisterlocks. I'm washing my hair for the first time in a few days since my full install (first retwist is coming up) and I noticed some of my ends are curling the way I like. Others still look frizzy/ undefined with knots. I got used to it pretty quickly and I was just excited to get them installed. I love my sisterlocks, the pattern is beautiful. I just want to conquer dead skin at my roots and coily ends. Stay blessed. Have a great day.

Thank you for making these videos for us, your objective voice is certainly needed in the sisterlocks community. I am thankful for your wisdom, honesty and advocacy in this space. The information you convey is necessary for us newly locked sisterlocks sisters but I think also empowers us to be able to advocate for ourselves without hesitation. In reflection, how I wish I knew this information prior to my establishment last year. When I went for consultation my consultant showed me how much of my hair she was going to leave out. I thought it was too much hair and I stated my concern; however, she indicated that the ends of my hair needed to be trimmed; so I asked if she could trim it. She didn’t respond instead she gave me a look; in other words no. That should’ve been my warning not to use her for my establishment but there re not that many consultants where I live so I booked my appointment. A week prior to my scheduled appointment I trimmed off 3-4” off my hair since I didn’t want her to leave out so much of my hair out. I knew it wouldn’t affect the price of my installation and that’s not why I did it. After watching this video I measured the amount of hair she left out and it more than 3”. My ends are really curly so I didn’t pay much attention to it. But now I’m furious because I know if I go back and ask her to finish the ends she won’t do it. I feel like some of these consultants take advantage of people because depending on where you live there might be few consultants and with limited options that determines cost and how you are treated. And all this factors into overlooking bad practices. If it wasn’t for the COVID-19 pandemic I was prepared to travel to the U.S to get my sisterlocks established. I’m very self sufficient and meticulous about everything therefore moving forward I will do my own retightening. I found another consultant and she is wonderful. I plan on seeing her twice a year. love you sis 🤗

I so agree with you. I am 8 mos loc'd and my loctician was just shampooing my hair and retightening and letting me go. My hair is unraveling at the end and has been for the last 5 mos. she never discusses it or the status of my locs. So I am trying to fire her. I did my first retie 3 weeks ago. I'm sure I made some mistakes, but I just learned today about plaiting the open ones down to the ends and that is what I started doing earlier today.

You're such a positive light! I'm about to start my Sisterlocks journey and I like how you approach the care of your hair! I will stick close to my loctitian trainee for probably the 6 mths-1st year if letting her take care if them. Then i will probably DIY my reties. On the subject if left out hair... I've seen so many leaving 2,3,4 inches if hair left out! That was the 1st thing I asked my loctitian about. I told her that it made no sense that people pay the money and the ends are not locked down? On my test locks she ratted the ends, but only left about 1-1/4 inches out. I was satisfied with that. But i thank you for doing a video, on this subject!! Thank you!!

I have open ends as well. It's funny because my hair was between 13 and 15 inches starting off and I was charged by the inch. But, as you stated in this video the ends were left unlocked and I am talking about 2 or 3 inches or so. I am new to this and was not hip the game. I was told that this was how it was done and the remaining hair will lock overtime. Someone like me who has finer and currier hair, probably will not the case. Now I don't actually mine it at all because I like the look anyway. I get to accentuate my curls still and my hair is very curly and very slippery. It will be a uear at the end of December since I first got my install. I learned how to sisterlock myself but still py for my retightenings. However I have taken lot of my hair done and redone them myself, because I felt that they were done too big.

Hello my Sista Tunisia! I'm a newbie & getting my sister locks done. She back combed my locs to start and I don't like it. My hair looks like big ratted knots on the ends. I'm worried about that. My locks are very new...ALMOST 2 WEEKS OLD! She said not to mess with them & trust the process. But I'm truly not comfortable with these knot on the ends of my hair! My hair was measured @ 11 inches. I only see maybe 5-6 inches on locked hair and the rest has been back combed. Which means a lot if my hair was ratted up. I'm new to this world and could truly use your experience. I have yet to even get my 1st retie. I know you don't advice...but seeing this video made me really think about my issue

Wow! That's tough. I am unsure, but it sounds like you need the advice of another loctician. Ifraj, my loctician used to advise sisters for 75$. I dont know if she still does. Its worth a shot. Ask if you can send her pictures and get a professional consult and see what she says. She is super busy, but it is worth a try. 404-207-6281
