Loose Tenon Jig Plus [video 493]

In this video is it my pleasure to introduce the latest 10MinuteWorkshop Loose #Tenon Jig, the LTJ+. Though functionally similar to the original #LooseTenon #Jig, the ‘plus’ is bigger, and it does more. Bigger, so it’s easier to use with larger routers, with wings for easier clamping and a clamping area ‘safe zone’ that’s clearly marked, and with rows of guide bush holes that makes boring holes on 32mm centres a breeze - perfect for shelf pins. Enjoy!

I got the LJT+ put it together and did some testing with it today. The LJT+ works as advertised cutting perfect slots for 5x19x30mm Domino Tenons. I didn't try any other sizes as this is my first foray into the Domino Loose Tenon and I am only looking to build simple cabinets until I get much better at woodworking. The test panels I was using fit together flawlessly, edges flushed up perfectly. The LJT+ jig is well made, easy to assemble, easy to use. I had the opportunity to chat a bit with Peter through Etsy messaging. You would be hard pressed to find a more honest, caring, professional person than Peter. I'm looking forward to making some great projects with this jig. Thanks Peter for everything

Here in Oz we are offered '5mm' and '6mm' shelf pins, which turn out to be 3/16" and 1/4" when you check them closely. But you have little chance of finding solid carbide router bits in anything other than 1/4"(6.35mm) or 1/2"(12.7mm) locally, all the other sizes are made for metal milling machines intended to fit their standard collet systems where the bit is parallel from end to end.

I've usually used a drill mounted in a pretty cheap sprung frame (possibly Wolfcraft) that I've had for decades. Brad bits work best and very well - used them for many years

I've never seen the 1/4" pins sold as 6mm. But I agree finding a 5mm cutter here is difficult.

Apart from originally struggling to find an 18mm guide bush to fit my Makita 1/4” router (although, a 3D printed version sounds great!), the previous version has been a great purchase. Once I got used to it and stopped fumbling around, it’s been a fantastic addition to my workflow and I can only imagine that anyone needing the plus version, will be just as happy. With the versatility of this jig, I’d highly recommend to anyone buying, that you assemble the jig with machine screws and threaded inserts.

Hi Peter - Excellent video and excellent jig. I know you have really good extraction on you router but I really would recommend that you wear a dust mask when using MDF. It produces very fine dust which is dangerous. I think you should also recommend it in your videos. Great work !!!

Thank you. Pre-drilling the holes for the threaded inserts would add a completely disproportionate amount of cost to the jig, unfortunately - it is something I looked at, but it’s a very laborious process as CNC machines don’t drill edges without considerable manual intervention. And in all honesty, my take on it was that if you’re capable of using the jig, you’d also be capable of drilling a couple of holes. 👍👍

An excellent upgrade to the original LTJ and very well thought out. The ability of this jig to also create shelf pin holes at 32mm centres is ingenious and included in the £85 price is even more amazing, when you think of the eye watering cost of the Festool LR32 system, I suspect there will be some gnashing of teeth at Festool UK when they see this one!

Great stuff. Ordered already, the wings are a great upgrade. Last time I used the original I had to resort to using the peanut jig to cut the mortise on the face edge of a board because of trouble clamping. I found the result was inferior to using your jig, so looking forward to receiving the new version.

I like this jig, but it has two issues: - it is tightly coupled to the thickness of the material, your demos are done with one thickness only. Same jig needs to be made in various thicknesses with a template bit (which is not too bad). - dust extraction doesn't work ver well (or not at all), and this is mainly because of the guide bush, and not because of the jig itself. MDF dust is also stickier than solid wood. Your jig inspired me, and I did some modifications to improve dust collection and make it work with stock 1/2" - 3" in thickness. With mine, I can also adjust the length of the mortise. I would be happy to share with you if you are interested, maybe you can help perfect it even further.

I loved this concept when you first showed it and bought the plans but haven’t yet made it. I will definitely be adding wings. Two questions - Can you offer a lead on where to get the guide pins and as you didn’t mention peanuts I assume that you are sticking with dominoes and the flexibility of the wider middle slot

Thanks! I like the wiggle room that dominos allow with the wider slot, but I’ve tested the original jig with peanut connectors and they worked well. You can pick up the guide pins off Amazon or eBay - they’re called clevis pins. 👍

I go through the pros and cons in Loose Tenon Basics [video 481] - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmmZgnqLo5yXd6s and Dowel Jig Basics [video 441] - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIXNkJuferuZrNk The long and short of it is that dowels are cheap and readily available but demand precision in use and if you want to avoid rotation then you need to use at least two per joint, which negates the cheapness to a large extent. Loose tenons cost more than dowels but each tenon has twice the gluing area of a similarly-sized (or next size up) dowel, no rotation issues and they’re a precise connector that lets you work loosely. 👍👍

This jig was discontinued earlier in the year, replaced by the current LTJ30 - launch video 535 here, kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5-qh5l7rKlgisU - but to answer your question, while the loose tenon jigs are designed to centre a loose tenon in 18mm stock, they will work with thinner material if packed out, or thicker stock if you can live with an off-centre mortise. As I say in the video, I’m demonstration how you would put a row of shelf pin holes along the full height of a cabinet, vs the 3-hole layout (1 centre, 1 above and below) either by lining up against a pencil mark, or using a common reference for the base of the jig eg the back of a guiderail. 👍

Yes absolutely. I don’t have a drilling guide, but I’ve used the router and guide bush to make dowelled joints. I did a short about it, and also about using the peanut connector with the jig. 👍👍

I noticed you lined up the jig for shelf holes buy eye . Is that the case or does the jig use a reference edge on side too? I suspect the Jig has even more design potential for cabinet like addition of a 35mm hole for hinges and a few drill hole templates for that too ..You might add a reference for a 96mm template to make a DIY MFT in it ..

Not really 'by eye' - as I say in the vid the jig aligns with the edge of the workpiece to give the 'standard' 37mm set-back for the shelf-pin holes. I aligned the edge by feel, but you could use a stop against the edge if you really needed to. I looked at options like 35mm holes for concealed hinges and 20mm holes on 96mm centres, but they all added complexity to what is a fairly simple dual-purpose jig - loose tenons and shelf-pin holes - and any benefits that those extra functions might have brought were also outweighed or compromised by them, too. 👍

Ok, I purchased the loose tenon jig, but the 18mm bushing does not fit any of my routers. I live in the USA. is the hole pattern on Trend a "UK" standard? It is a great little gadget though.....

Hi, and thanks for the purchase. The Trend guide bush is based on the classic Elu, then Dewalt standard, so it's pretty widely used, though many router manufacturers like to go their own way with guide bush design and fitting. There's a couple of options; Trend do make a 'universal sub base' to adapt their guide bushes to other routers - not sure if that's readily available in the US - or you can make a plywood sub base up pretty easily. Not sure which router you have but if it uses the Porter Cable 'two brass rings' style of guide bush then I've only seen them available here for the Katsu trim router, but there's definitely an 18mm available for them. The other option is to get a 3D printed one; I'll paste some links to those for some of the common routers below, OK? Would the jig be capable of having the microjig dovetail tracks at say 60 degree's offset in the wing sections to give you a routing surface with no clamps in the way?

@@10MinuteWorkshop Hi Peter, thank you for the reply. After an hour of googling I can’t find said UKJ accessory. I can see that they do one for the smaller 1010 router. My plan B is turning one up on my lathe, which won’t take very long and since I live in New Zealand the delivery time from the UK is a week at least anyway. I’m just posting this in case anyone else has solved this dilemma, or in case this helps someone else solve theirs. For future designs could I humbly suggest using a more common guide size. Quick question ... PM usually makes his cabinets from MRMDF, but how does loose tenon joinery in MDF compare with in ply ?

It’s a little tougher on the bits, but the bit that’s supplied with the starter pack is a really good, a solid carbide spiral upcut. I’ve been using the same one since I started making these jigs! 👌👍

I've also found that shelf pins are too small for a 5mm hole. But I already have a jig so: can anybody advise where I can get shelf pins that actually ARE 5mm, rather than merely being advertised as such?

They are; as I mention in the vid. you need a 4.76mm bit for a snug fit with "5mm" shelf pins. I supply one in the starter pack plus, or you can get them individually from Rennie tools. 👍

Depends which Dewalt router. Trend use an old Elu/Dewalt standard, but Dewalt have gone away from that with some of their lines. Best starting point is to see if the OEM has an 18mm bush, then look at 3rd party guides. 👍

I love this! One challenge I have is that I can’t seem to find a guide bush for my OF1400. The one I currently have has an external diameter of 21mm and it doesn’t seem that Festool makes a snap-on bushinh that’s 18mm. Any suggestion on what 18mm guide bush I can use for the OF1400?

There’s a UJK set that works with the OF1400 that includes an 18mm. Otherwise you can get 3D printed options on Etsy and eBay I use an Etsy one in my OF1010. 👍👍

Hi. No, I’m sorry - they’re discontinued now; Birch ply is still too expensive, and making it from the new material to accommodate the 30mm guide bush was too costly to machine. And honestly, it was never that popular once the plus jig came out. I do have a few ‘old stock or cosmetic seconds’ on a shelf and I’ll be giving those away to 10MW Plus members in one of the regular member giveaways before too long, but there are a few others to get through before then so I’m not sure when this will be exactly. 👍

No, you need a different bush, same as the Katsu you can either buy a brass set on eBay for ~£20, or a 3D printed one-off on Etsy for about £6 👍

This jig will take all Domino DF500 sizes, with the appropriate bit and plunge depth. It is intended for use in 18mm thick stock, so while it will work on thicker stock - where a 10x50 might be appropriate - it won’t be centred. A more challenging task may be to find a 10mm spiral upcut bit with a 1/2” shank, though. 👍

How did you align the centre mortices accurately without an edge to make it accurate?

In this video it was against an edge, but for a mid-panel mid-carcass fixing for eg a shelf, you just bear the jig against a batten or straight edge - as I did when putting in the shelf-pin holes - and lining the centre marks against a pencil line. You can screw the jig down through the holes either side of the middle cut-out - any marks are hidden by the panel. If that’s not clear I showed the whole process in the previous video for the regular loose tenon jig - link in description. 👍👍

I generally use the Festool centering mandrel - amzn.to/32cYjcc It’s very well made - you won’t need to buy another - and unusually it isn’t outrageously priced, for Festool, though a quick amazon search shows up a cheaper Bosch one here - amzn.to/3J8r0qz - and a more expensive DeWalt one, here - amzn.to/3DDT6J4 They all do the same job, so personally I’d go for the solid, 'machined from a single block of metal’ Festool version unless funds were especially tight. 👍👍

Have you investigated the cost of shipping to North America? I’m sure it’s ridiculous, but a Domino is $1600 here and depending on how expensive it is, it might still be worth it.

I ship globally. US shipping is around £24 ($30) I believe, for a tracked service. I’m in discussions with a couple of companies about manufacturing an imperial version in the US as getting an 18mm guide bush seems to be more problematic than it should be. 👍
