My 3400 is supposed to arrive this week, replacing my 21 year-old Kenmore HE3T. I must admit, I will miss the 45-minute wash cycle of the Kenmore, but like you said, the newer machines are using longer wash cycles and there's not much to do about it. We'll see! Thank you for the video, even though it was several years ago.

@John Texas I'm willing to learn other tips and tricks, but I'm also talking about modern machines that have a cycle for everything. A cycle for jeans, a cycle for towels, a cycle for sheets each cycle doing its own water levels and agitation. For the most part I separate by clothing type what I was referring to with people who throw it all in is I know people who stick there bed sheets in with a load of mixed jeans shirts and sweaters. All on one cycle which seems that it wouldn't be as effective as seperating it out based on clothing type
@MaytagMachineManiac
@MaytagMachineManiac 4 жыл бұрын
@John Texas fair enough, both types of machines have pros and cons. I own a Ge top loaders from 2018 (A huge upgrade from the Maytag bravos I owned before it) it has 15 cycles (including tub clean rinse and spin and drain and spin) ive been pleased with it. Cycles are quick. For example the normal cycle is 38 minutes. Even with longer cycles is has effective use of cycle time. The heavy duty cycle is an hour and a good 35 minutes of the cycle is spent cleaning the clothes. I can also add water to the washer when I need to. So most of my cycles are using more than enough water. But because it's a modern washer it's not as reliable in the sense of throw everything in there and turn it to normal which is unfortunate but it makes up for it in other aspects

@Isaac Joby John I prefer front loaders myself. I have the most basic LG front loader from 2012, and it's only 3.6 cubic foot. Like this one in the video, mine fills with a rising effect, instead of spraying the clothes with water directly into the tub, like my old Frigidaire front loader from 1999. My old front loader actually filled faster, because the clothes got wet faster by the spray action, and used enough water by filling a third of the tub. My LG was set at the factory to barely have water in the tub. So I had clothes that never got wet, and clothes that got wet never washed or rinsed properly. It had detergent and fabric softener residue on the clothes that got wet. After watching a video on how to add more water, I set the water level to closely match the level my old front loader had, and while it still takes a while to fully get the clothes saturated, it now fills until every piece of clothing gets wet, and maintains the water level I have it set at. I can still add clothes mid cycle if needed. When I need a new front loader, I hope to get one with turbo wash, so it get clothes saturated with water faster, though the spray jets spray the water different from my first front loader. My first one sprayed it in the tub just to get them wet. The LG's with turbo wash simply sprays the clothes with water through each tumble.
@davenwin1973
@davenwin1973 4 жыл бұрын
@Isaac Joby John your current front loader is about the size of my old Frigidaire front loader, which was 3.1 cubic foot. The spin speed was poor at only 550rpm, and only went to 900rpm during the last 3 minutes of the final spin. On my LG, I only use the normal cycle, as it washes at the quickest time possible. Since I have to manually add a 3rd rinse, it takes a minimum of 1 hour to wash my clothes. I set the spin speed to high or maximum (maximum doesn't work for bulky items, as it struggles to drain the water at the maximum speed).

Got me a little nervous there. This set arrives monday and it will be my first front loaders after many yrs of old school top loaders. @Broadway Joe Well, cycle time seems to be based on weight so if you stuff the machine be prepared to.....wait (well over an hr for just the wash) but that's a lot of clothes in a full load. The features are nice, like the ability to add extra rinses. The quick wash is the most amazing thing ever. If I need to wash roughly the equivalent of a single outfit its just a 30 min wash/dry total cycle and I find myself using this a lot. Overall very happy, although I will be getting pedestals soon because these are very low height wise (but at a cost of 500 for a set, ridiculous). I cant imagine I would need any features found on the higher end models that would justify the price increase.

If you are able to to get ahold of it, can you try a few loads on the lg #WT7300C? It’s really amazing. I’m so surprised how well it cleans a very heavy load on the normal cycle. Not a lot of water added, but it still manages to roll over a decent size load in 2-3 minutes into agitation.

I bought this machine in June after watching some of your other LG videos and have been wondering your thoughts on it. I only paid $525 for it. I've noticed that it cleans really well but doesn't rinse that well too! I pretty much always use the extra rinse. I've found that a Tide pod is way too much detergent for this machine. I use around two tablespoons of powder (regular tide or arm and hammer w/ oxiclean) in warm/hot water and a tablespoon or a little less of liquid tide in cold water for a normal size load. Another trick that seems to work if you want to use extra detergent is let it run the full cycle without extra rinse, then run a separate rinse and spin cycle afterwards. It seems to use more water for the rinse this way... like it tricks it into thinking it's a heavier load bc it's already wet or something.

Same as my basic 10 year old LG front loader. Half of the cycle is done without the clothes even getting wet. I realize the goal is to save water, but tumbling dry clothes doesn't do them any favors. Going to dig out the old Kenmore top loader with agitator and put it back in service.

Compared to the Frigidaire front loader I had from 1999, front loaders today have the water level set too low. I actually changed the water level on mine so it used more water. I have it set so it keeps tumbling until each piece of clothing gets wet, and maintains the level I set it at. I can also see water splashing on the window at times. So that tells you that it's using enough water.

@A. V. 3.5 cu ft was the average size 8 years ago. 4.5 cu ft was available 8 years ago as well, but were usually mid to high end models. Clothes do need to be saturated enough so clothes can get clean. Many of these machines are set too low, that you don't see water at all. They do need some water in there, and not just a tiny puddle. That tiny amount is also why many front loaders have mold problems, and detergent buildup. With my current LG front loader, if I left it set to the default water level, I would be wearing dirty clothes all the time, because they never got a drop of water in the cycle. I have it so it's a bit higher, but the door can still be opened, if I need to add clothing to the wash cycle. The tub isn't adding that much additional weight from the water and clothes. I don't have mold problems with my front loader either.
@latui7350
@latui7350 2 жыл бұрын
@@davenwin1973 I would argue the reason front loaders have so many mold problems is due to Americans not knowing how to correctly dos detergent. Though, this is really the fault of the manufacturers and detergent makers for not educating the consumer or adopting standards for dosing.

I agree this wasn't the correct cycle for this amount of laundry. The issue with the speed wash cycle is it doesn't do an intermediate spin between the wash or the rinses. It's likely programmed that way for the sake of a short cycle time. I asked previously if the balance/suspension system was the same in this model as the higher models. It seems like it is as it didn't struggle getting balanced.

@latui7350

I have a turbowash model and I would say it's worth it if you value short cycles and if you use standard detergent (Tide, Persil, etc.). I personally do not like the turbo wash feature because it significantly decreases cycle times, which doesn't work with the detergent I use (enzyme based or natural detergents). Because the cycle times are decreased, enzymes don't have enough time to work. You're also unable to disable turbowash on the normal and heavy duty cycles. I wish LG kept the turbowash option but didn't decrease cycle times. The turbowash spray is really great for getting clothing saturated with water and detergent quickly and it also helps premix detergent. Machines, like Electrolux, have something like this that helps premix and saturate clothing with detergent without decreasing cycle times, which is ideal imo.

The drum in this washer looks tilted back, but maybe that is from the camera angle. I don't care for tilted drums. I really wish LG would switch from these bursts fills especially for rinses. Just put the water in the drum and get on with it. The three rinses were good but needed since I don't think I saw a spin after the wash or rinses. I understand this is the quick cycle but no spin after a wash is not something I want to deal with in any cycle.

My Samsung front loader automatically adjusts many of the cycles to well over 2 hours. I've learned the only way to avoid this is to choose no more than a "normal" soil level. For example...When I choose "Normal Cycle, Heavy Soil Level" it will say its going to take 1:24 at first, however, after it does its tumble and sense stuff it ALWAYS jumps up the time to about 2:05. No rhyme or reason, and my clothes aren't always that dirty. I have let it run that long a few times and I kid you not, the clothes come out kinda "dank". You know..like they've been in the washer too long... I have a love/hate relationship with my Samsung Front loader. I did hack it to use more water though. I had some pretty badly stained colored T-shirts and threw them in with some other clothes in my Speed Queen TR7 washer using the Heavy Duty cycle and Heavy soil setting with just a cap full of Tide and a cap full of Clorox 2 along with a warm wash and 55 minutes later, Everything came out clean and smelling fresh... So it just goes to show you that you don't always need those 2 hour wash cycles if you know what you are doing??? Thanks for the video Eugene and have a great day!!!

@@simonemartini3017 a washer doesn't necessarily need a heating element to keep the water at a specific temperature. Even if it did, North American washers with built in heating elements don't heat the water the same way European washers do. It simply boosts the temperature so many degrees. With Europe using tankless water heaters, they don't always bring enough hot water to the washers. Since Europe is on 208/240 volt service, they can have washing machines and dishwashers heat its own water within a few minutes. As for traditional top loaders being able to wash clothes faster, has to do with the tub filling all the way to the top with water, and using an agitator. Front loaders when filled with enough water, and using 3 rinses, will do just as good of a job, but will require slightly longer times. 1 hour is really all that's needed in most cases to do a load in a front loader. 2 and 3 hours is ridiculous. My first front loader from 1999 had a maximum time of 50 minutes to do a wash and 3 short rinses. It also used between 18 and 27 gallons of water per cycle. My current LG was factory set at 11 to 13 gallons, but I had to rig it so it used at least 20 gallons, and lucky if it sets the time to 1 hour. Most times, it's one hour and 10 minutes on the normal cycle with 3 rinses (I have to manually add a 3rd rinse each time, as it's factory set to 2 rinses).

@@davenwin1973 European front loaders used to have much short cycle time however electricity usage is calculated by the hour so in order to get good electricity ratings more time =less electricity per one hour. My grandmas old soviet front loader built based on a 70s design did a 90°c cycle with 5 rinses (spin dried in between) in around an hour.

Does anyone have advice on what really cleans clothes best, top load or frontload? I’m looking at a LG 3900 frontload set and also looking at buying Speed Queen TR 5 or a TR 7, both too loads. One minute I’m sure of one, the next minute I’m sure it’s got to be the other. Buying a washer is a big deal but I’m making it a bigger deal than it needs to be. Advice?

I’ve got a Speed Queen top load 2017 I believe is the date of manufacture. It has a spray rinse feature that saturated the top of the washer with water and has caused it to rust unfortunately. I found this about 30 days out of its warranty and Speed Queen wants close to $400 to fix it I would stay away from Speed Queen I’ve had two transmissions go out and Speed Queen has been very unhelpful. The local distributor replaced the washing machine after a service company screwed it up so bad it couldn’t be fixed

Yeah get an LG front loader. Test after test, review after review, they clean better, handle varying (including huge size) loads better, rinse better, balance better, and most importantly, spin better. 1300 RPM gets *a lot* more water and detergent residue out than the lazy 650 or 700 RPM of a top loader. Who wants to pay for the electricity to boil all that water out in the dryer??

North American washers in general with heating elements, only boost the temperature maybe 20°F. So it relies on water from a water heater. If washers were made like European washers, would require a 2 phase 208/240 volt circuit, and our electrical system actually costs more to operate than in much of the rest of the world, where it's 208/240 volts for everything.

The water is too efficient and not enough during the wash. My previous Whirlpool front-load had more water during the wash, and also had a soak cycle which I loved. As for this model, I'll just add water to the drum or pour it through the detergent reservoir for better washing. The only thing I don't like are the cycle times. The right combination can be 3 hours. and that's with only 1 extra rinse. That's ridiculous.

I would argue the issues in the video are due to user error as he mentions. I don't really get the US's obsession with having washing done in 30 minutes (dinosaur top loaders), especially when it's scientifically proven that top loaders do not clean clothing as well and especially as efficiency as front loaders. Even LFA has videos here showing how terrible top load washers are at stain removal and overall cleaning. I'm able to process a week's worth of laundry for a family of 8 in 4-5 hours with little hands on attention, and I know the clothing is actually getting cleaned, all while using 1/3 of the resources. - Too much detergent. Y'all just quit with the pods. Using pods is the worst thing you can do with a front load washer. #1 - These take forever to dissolve, which means your load won't even be dosed with detergent until halfway through the wash cycle and you run the risk of continued dosing through rinse cycles as the rest of the packet dissolves unevenly. #2 - Since each load's parameters are adjusted to that specific load, you also need to be dosing detergent according to the load. Using pods take away that ability and 9/10 times is going to overdose your load with detergent. If you have *hard* water and a standard powder detergent, the dosing is typically 1 *tablespoon* for a regular load and 1.5 *tablespoons* for a heavy load. Even less for # concentrated liquid detergents. If you have *soft* water cut the dosing in half. Americans are especially notorious at overdosing detergent which leads to all sorts of issues with your machines and clothing regardless if you us a front or top loader. This can be heavily blamed on detergent manufacturers for making products that are difficult to dose and not adopting standard dosing. - Incorrect cycle. The quick wash cycles are designed for 2-3 lightweight garments. Self explanatory.

Scientifically proven they don't clean? Really. They clean very well when they're not overloaded, which many idiots insist on doing. And Euros don't like traditional center post agitator top loaders because energy costs a fortune in Europe and so does water. The washer you reference that Eugene tested was a Speed TR model, which received so much major backlash when it was introduced in 2018, That Speed Queen had to re-introduce their conventional traditional top load design again the following year. There is nothing wrong with conventional top load washers, There's something wrong with Euros. Most of us don't want to wait 3 hours to get laundry clean

@@Ikey04-ge9gyExactly. 4.5 *usable* cubic feet is a lot more than 5 cu ft in a modern "clothes rumbler" top loader - those only work it seems if you only fill them about 1/3 of their stated capacity. Insane how people think top loaders are better. No other country on the planet would put up with a guzzling, buzzing, lazy spinning clothes shredder like Americans seem to love.

@@Ikey04-ge9gy Here's the part I don't understand. When I go to a laundromat, and use their huge front-loader machines - they work very very differently with water. They seem to fill up (full) of water, and then start the spinning to clean everything. THAT seems normal to me. Contrast that to the front loaders for your home - where the machines simply get things (wet), and then tumble them around for a long long time ! If the home front-loaders actually (used enough water) to completely submerge the clothing (like they do in the laundromats) - then I could get on-board with it. I think the desire to be (green) with little-to-NO-water-usage has severely negatively impacted the ability of the washers to actually do a good and (thorough) job.
@Ikey04-ge9gy
@Ikey04-ge9gy Жыл бұрын
Actually, front loaders do the most effective and thorough job as compared to top loaders. Y’all just rely on the psychological effect of seeing your clothes being fully submerged to lead to it being clean, which isn’t always the case. Front loaders use only what is needed, and they still clean better. They wet the clothes, thrash them about in a pool of water (rather than scrubbing alone), then spins way faster meaning better rinse performance and dry times.
